Once when a Lion was asleep, a little mouse began running up and down upon him; this soon wakened the Lion, who placed his huge paw upon him, and opened his big jaw to swallow him. คราวหนึ่ง เมื่อราชสีห์ (สิงโต) ตัวหนึ่งนอน หลับอยู่ หนูเล็กๆ ตัวหนึ่งได้เริ่มวิ่งขึ้นวิ่งลง บนสิงโตตัวนั้น ด้วยเหตุนี้ ไม่ช้าไม่นานสิงโต ก็ตื่น และเอาอุ้งมือขนาดใหญ่ตะปบมันไว้ พร้อมอ้าปากกว้างเตรียมขยอกกลืน

Sometime after the lion was caught in a trap, and the hunters, who desired to carry him alive to the king, tied him to a tree while they went in search of a waggon to carry him on. หลังจากนั้นมานานพอดู สิงโตตัวนั้นไปติด กับดัก (ของนายพราน) เข้า ฝ่ายนายพราน ซึ่งปรารถนาจะนำไปเป็น เพื่อถวายพระราขา จึงช่วยกันผูกมันไว้กับต้นไม้ต้นหนึ่ง แล้วพวก เขาก็ไปหารถมาบรรทุก เพื่อบรรทุกมันไป

Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in which the lion was, went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the king of the beasts. ขณะนั้นเจ้าหนูน้อยบังเอิญผ่านมา และแล เห็นสภาพอันน่าเศร้าของสิงโต จึงเดินเข้าไป ใกล้สิงโต แล้วกัดแทะเชือก ที่มัดราชาแห่งสัตว์ป่านั้นกระจุยไป

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า (Moral of the story) 1. Little friends may prove great friends. เพื่อนตัวเล็ก เล็ก อาจเป็นเพื่อนที่ยิ่งใหญ่ได้ 2. A kindness is never wasted. การทำความดีมีเมตตานั้นไม่เคยสูญเปล่า…สร้างกุศล ในวันนี้ ย่อมได้รับการตอบแทนในวันหน้า คำศัพท์ (Vocabulary) caught = กริยาช่อง 2 และ 3 ของ catch แปลว่า จับ, จับไว้, คว้า, ตะครุบ, คล้องไว้ do you a turn = ตอบแทน (บุญคุณ) ท่าน tickle = ขำขัน,จี้ให้หัวเราะ waggon = รถบรรทุกสินค้า (แต่ก่อนเทียมด้วยม้า) plight = สภาพที่ลำบาก(หรือตกอยู่ในอันตราย), ชะตากรรม
