QUIZ 1 Academic Texts and Thesis Statements 2 ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

REFLECTION Academic texts make up the bulk of what we read in school as well as in other forms of media. It is a form of media that aims to inform. It wouldn't be an academic text if wasn't professionally worded. Learning about academic texts has made me realize its importance as a student of life. There are some things that you cannot just learn from context and intuition alone. Informing yourself by reading such texts is a natural way of learning. It helps me understand what I want to understand. ENGLISH IN FLUX 3

WRITTEN WORK 1 A Summary of the mRNA-1273 Vaccine The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, or SARS-CoV-2, first appeared on December 2019 and spread at an alarming rate, resulting in a pandemic by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Through immediate response all over the world, the first 5 months of 2020 saw the development of at least 120 candidate SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. This paper involves the study of one of the experimental vaccines by the mRNA-1273 Study Group. Eligible participants were consenting adults from the age of 18-55 with no severe health issues. The trial experiments were performed at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle and at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. The vaccine itself was developed by researchers of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) who sponsored the trial and Moderna, the institute that provided the vaccine candidate, also contributed to the trial design and drafted part of the manuscript. The trial procedure has the vaccine administered 28 days apart. Participants were to record any reactions using a memory aid at 7 days after the administration of the vaccine. The results varied from each participant, some experiencing side effect of fatigue, chills, and headaches while some experiencing more severe side effects. In conclusion, it was discovered that the mRNA-1273 vaccine candidate allowed immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 in all participants and had no safety concern. The findings allowed the vaccine candidate to be supported and developed further. 4 ENGLISH IN FLUX

Summarizing a paper isn't just about shortening a block NOITCELFER of text by removing certain sentences here and there. It requires a lot of consideration, especially with which sentences should be retained, which should be removed, or which should be paraphrased. Understanding the paper beforehand helps in structuring the summary cohesively and makes it easier to figure out the important points that the text is trying to convey. For me, learning how to summarize can not only apply to my skills in academics, but can also be related to real life. Knowing when to cut things out, when to keep doing something, and when to change some aspects of my life will help me in understanding what I need and want for myself in the long run. REFLECTION Various forms of media are always being judged. This way, we may learn things past what we initially understood. That is the purpose of a critique paper. Reviewing the approaches in a critique paper as well as its structure has helped me remember the meticulous process of criticism that all forms of literature, art, and music go through. 6 ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

QUIZ 2 The Approaches of Criticism ENGLISH IN FLUX 7

NOITCELFER Whether it be literature, art, music, or theater, the only way to see all sides of a subject is to approach it in all the possible ways you can. That's where critiquing comes in. As someone who has critiqued a few topics before, I understand that there's always something in certain forms of media that have something hidden beneath the surface. More often than not, there are messages scattered in even the smallest details. The more we judge something objectively, the easier it is for us to see the small pieces fit into the bigger picture. Again, it's something that we can use in various situations in our life, especially when it comes to understanding why people do what they do. It'll help us in formulating our opinions properly without jumping to conclusions too early. 8 ENGLISH IN FLUX

WRITTEN WORK 2 The Relevance of a Critique Paper In order to write a critique paper, one must learn to look at a topic with a critical eye. After all, a critic must learn to be objective in analyzing a piece of work in order to give clear judgement and opinion on how well it was created. Critiquing a paper is not only about the product, but the process as well. Using different approaches to critique a paper allows a person to broaden their knowledge on a subject. Being able to determine if the author or creator is trying to get a point across by adding a certain element allows the critic to look into it deeply. For example, if one were to do a critique on the movie “Parasite”, a movie about class difference, one would see the various symbolisms hidden in the cinematography that relates to class difference if they analyzed it past the face level. In conclusion, critiquing a paper allows a person to stop looking at the immediate appearance of a work and to dig deeper into the way it was made. It hones a person’s judging skills in a way that it is engraved into their personality. In return, those analytical skills can be used to understand the situations we experience in real life and help us formulate a conclusion as if we were critiquing ourselves ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES 9

MINITASK 1 A Critique on the Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh The Starry Night is a post- Renaissance painting created by the artist, Vincent Van Gogh. The painting is one of the more prominent and famous pieces in the style of post- Impressionism. It was painted when he had been suffering from mental problems and was confined at a mental facility in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-deProvence. It depicts the view on a certain night, with stars illuminating the small village in the distance. It is said that Van Gogh painted this entirely from his imagination, as there was no such scenery in the view outside of his room’s window. 10 ENGLISH IN FLUX

MINITASK 1 Van Gogh’s paintings seem to reflect the state of his emotional well-being. In contrast to previous works such as The Café Terrace at Night and his Sunflowers series, which was used with bright, vivid colors, The Starry Night was painted with various shades of dark colors, with only yellows to be seen in the stars. Because it was painted during a time when he was mentally ill, he allowed his emotions to be painted through canvas. As if in a delirium, his use of blues was particularly abundant, a color symbolizing extreme sadness and the deepest hues of the ocean. It is as if he is trying to convey how far gone he is with regards to his mental state; like an abyss too difficult to escape from. The only bright colors appearing in the piece are from the light of the moon and the stars. Even then, such colors, a common symbol of brightness and hope, only appear in blots, as if to imply that his vision of hope is blurring and scattered. The dark color of the cypress tree before him feels like a looming darkness, taking up big part of the painting. Looking at the painting, one cannot help but feel that the whole scene is like a dream, with shapes and forms that feel out of this world. In a way, its other worldly qualities are a result from the unknown turmoil going in the artist’s mind. The painting was able to convey more emotion than realism. Although the painting depicts a scene above ground, it also has the feeling of being deep underwater, with light of the moon and stars slowly dimming as if sinking further down. The painting has a clear image of the emotions Van Gogh was exhibiting during this ordeal in his life. As such, it is a prime example of post-Impressionism whose fame is well- deserved. In conclusion, The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh is a work of art that represents one of the artist’s peak moment in art in contrast to his lowest point in life. 12 ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

REFLECTION It's more difficult to critique a piece of art than it is to critique a piece of literature. After all, we. as the the viewers, have no idea what was in the mind of the artist during the whole process. We can only gather its context visually and even then, its meaning is different for each person. I do believe that a lot of what you can gather from this painting is based on the artist's life at the time it was painted. It clearly had an impact on the way he visualized his idea and thus, allowed us to understand his perspective through the brush strokes painted mysteriously and entrancingly. Doing a critique on such a famous painting made it a bit difficult to formulate my personal understanding of it, as all possible meanings have since been discussed and shared online. However, it does show that the piece has enough context that it allowed for various opinions and meanings to be understood. It's not just an abstract. ENGLISH IN FLUX 13

MINITASK 2 Giovani: A Concept Paper on an Online Therapy Program As Filipinos, we cherish our youth, for they are the treasure of the family and the leaders of the future. We long to see them grow happy, ambitious, and resilient enough to face the many challenges of life. However, with the troubles and pressures of the fast-paced and technological life, that is unfortunately not always easy for them to do. According to the Department of Health (DOH), around 3.3 million Filipinos suffer from depression, the majority of which are youths. That rate is predicted to rise as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, with isolation and uncertainty being major factors that contribute to mental disorder. Not only are the young struggling to cope with the day to day, but they also must deal with the pandemic making it harder and harder to reach out for help. This is why we developed Giovani, named after the Italian word for youth as well as the patron saint of youths, St. Giovanni (John) Bosco, as an answer to the urgent need for mental healthcare nationwide, especially during times of stress such as the pandemic. As therapy can no longer occur face-to-face, Giovani instead offers immediate and affordable online sessions via Google Meet with licensed counselors and psychologists, all properly trained to handle with care and compassion the needs of our clients. 14 ENGLISH IN FLUX

For the full paper, visit https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AsQrngcO9-NOITCELFER erFu824symrlT5u-pJ3_zM/view?usp=sharing I learned a lot of things while doing this concept paper. So many things happen behind the scenes of a business enterprise. One cannot simply start a business with just the bare minimum. It still needs a lot of support from other people, especially if it something huge in scale. Visualizing a relatively clear path should be one of the first things to do when starting a business. As such, a concept paper can act as that first step. For this task, I believe that working with other people to form a concept paper is more productive. You can rely on each other to fill in the blanks that you cannot answer by yourself. Just like in reality, each person has their own forte that makes them fitted for a task. For me, the concept paper shows the value of this. ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES 15

About Me I'm Allen Ramos, currently a Grade 12 HUMSS student at the time this was made. If I don't go through with the psychology degree, I want to be a librarian or a part-time digital artist. There's nothing more I want than a job that allows me to work at my own pace. I was once a writer for our school magazine, a Salesian Youth Group leader, and a member of the school's \"student council\". Now, i'm just a student trying my best to study online, occasionally performing for virtual choral performances for the DBS Chorale. 16 ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES
