SORFERT ALGERIE is a petrochemical company specialized in exploitation and marketing of ammonia and urea on international markets. Created on June 10th, 2007 SORFERT is the result of a partnership between two great of the petrochemical sector Orascom Construction Industries OCI N.V. and the SONATRACH Group, which is a perfect illustration of the establi- shement of a partnership with an international investor with a view to gaining market share outside of hydrocarbons. This successful partnership positions SORFERT today as privileged operator both in terms of human resources, having created more than 1,200 direct and indirect jobs, as well as on a purely economic level as an active player among the leading providers of non-hydrocarbon currencies. for the Algerian economy. The SORFERT production complex was built by OCI in partnership with ThyssenKrupp industrial Solutions (TKIS, ex-Uhde). The complex is equipped with latest generation technology. Construction of the complex was completed in 2013; the first full year operation was in 2014. SORFERT has become one of the largest integrated producers of nitrogen fertilizers in North Africa, with a production capacity of 1/26 million metric tons of urea granules and 1.6 million metric tons of anhydrous ammonia per year.

Synthesis of Ammonia (NH3): The ammonia synthesis reaction takes place at 200 bars in the presence of an iron-based catalyst combined with small amounts of metal oxides acting as promo- ters. N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) 2NH3 (g) + OH The synthesis is carried out through two stages of converters: - a converter with 2 radial catalyst beds - a converter with 1 radial catalyst bed. Refrigeration of Ammonia: The refrigeration system is part of the Ammonia synthesis process and will fulfill the three objectives: - Provision of refrigeration required for cooling in Ammonia and Urea units. - Cool liquid ammonia at storage conditions of -330C. Separation of inert gas dissolved in liquid ammonia. Ammonia gas is compressed and then condenses. Liquid ammonia is admitted to the heat exchanger The manufacture of urea goes through the following steps: The synthesis of urea: The synthesis of urea is carried out by the reaction of NH3 and CO2 at high pressure forming ammonium carbamate, which is then thermally dehydrated, forming urea and water: 2 NH3 + CO2 NH2COONH4 CO(NH2)2 + H2O

INTRODUCTION: The ammonia manufacturing process is UHDE technology (TKIS) while the urea manufacturing process is that of Stamicarbon. The raw materials needed for the Complex: -Natural Gas([C1+C6+],N2,CO2,He,H2O,H2S,...). -Oxygen and Nitrogen(Nitrogen) from Atmospheric Air. -Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from the CO2 extraction unit. -The water vapor generated by the heat recovery is produced by the boilers the finished Products of the complex are: Liquid Ammonia (NH3). 2x2,200 MT/D Urea. (CO (NH2) 2): Granulated. 3,450 MT/D The manufacture of ammonia therefore goes through several stages with: Extraction of Helium and Mercury from natural gas Extract Helium from GN feed by a membrane diffusion process Eliminate Mercury by absorption on the catalyst to prevent corrosion Desuiphurization / Compression of Natural Gas Eliminate the Sulfur components which are poisons for the catalysts in the primary reformer and in the LT-shift conversion steam Reforming and cracking (steam reforming): In the Steam Reforming or Steam Reforming process, the NG is transformed into CO,CO2, H2 in contact with catalyst.

CO Conversion The CO in the synthesis gas is then transformed by conversion to CO2 with additional production of hydrogen. The conversion of carbon (shift reaction) is carried out in two stages: -HTS-High temperature (430°C) -LTS-Low temperature (200°C) CO2 extraction: The CO2 is removed from the conversion gas by an activated l’MDEA wash of BASF/(Cuse). Absorption is carried out at high pressure (35bars) and low tempera- ture (50°C) and the Regeneration by expansion (Flash to remove the maximum amount of CO2, and thus ensure Efficient decarbonation. Methanation: Small amounts of CO and CO2, remaining in the gas mixture, can poison the ammonia synthesis catalyst and must be extracted by conversion to methane by hydrogenation in the methanation reactor: CO + 3H2 CO2 + 4H2 CH4 + H20 CH4 + 2H2O Synthesis Gas Compression The synthesis gas resulting from the Methanation is freed from the liquid phase (expansion) to be combined after cooling with gas rich is hydrogen supplied by the hydrogen recovery system

Ammonium Carbamate Uree: CO(NH2)2 + H2O The two feed streams, (Ammonia and carbon dioxide are fed to the synthesis section at a molar ratio of 2: 1 respectively. Ammonia with ammonium carbamate, also called carbamate, are fed to the condenser of synthesis. Most of the gas condenses and together with Amonia, turns into carbmate. Granulation: In the granulation section of the unit, the Uree solution feeds the granulator. Formaldehyde is added to the Uree stream as an upstream additive. In the granulator, a fluidized bed of the product is generated by the granulation fluidization fan. In this fluidized bed, consisting of fine recycled granules, oversized crushed granules and dust, the Uree solution is vaporized and atomized into fine particles, which cool the Uree particles during fluidization.

As a result, the diameter of the particle increases. In the last part of the granulator, the product is cooledby the fluidizing air to a temperature of about 94°C. At the exit of the granulator, safety screens are installed to remove agglomerates and particles larger than 10 mm in diameter from the product stream. The sieve separates the product into three fractions. The oversized product fraction is transferred to the roller mills and from it to the granulator as recycle. The correct size product is transfered to the after cooler. The undersized product fraction is also recycled to the granulator. The product in the after cooler is cooled and subsequently transferred to storage.

COMMITEMENTS TO RESPECT THE RULES OF HYGIENE, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Sofert SPA is a category 1 establishment, application of safety rules essential within company, Sorfert’s management considers safety as a fundamental value and is committed to maintaining its activities intervening party within the company. its field of activity, to preserve the environ- ment, to ensure the integrity of its facilities and respect the principle of sustainable development. We have set ourselves the following objectives: 1- Guarantee a healthy and accident free workplace 2- Avoid all health problems related to work. 3- Control and reduce the risks associated with our products during their life cycle and choose the process and products in which the use of raw materials and energy is minimized. 4- Evaluate and improve our practices, process and products on an ongoing basis to make them safe andacceptable to employees, customers, and the environment.

Unité d’Urée (Stamicarbon - Uhde) The reagents (NH3 and CO2), purified to remove carbon monoxide (CO) and humidity, are compressed separately, then introduced into the reactor. The formation of the carbamate is very rapid there. The reactor operates corrosion by ammonia carbamate solutions above 200°C. The reactor effluent, consisting of urea, ammonia carbamate and unconverted reagents, is subjected by modification of the operating conditions to a decomposition which converts part of obtained which, by a finishing treatment, is brought to the desired finaly purity. The urea thus obtained is granulated within a granulation section then directed to a bulk urea hangar and from transport & by truck to the port of Arzew Centrale utilitités: This plant is sized to provide the necessary utilities for the ammonia and urea units.
