PLAY REVIEW By : Andrew Francis A. Olandez Jr
INTRODUCTION Rated:PG is a play about how to treat your child and what not to do to your child. It is written by Liza Magtoto and directed by Mae Quesada-Medina. It encourages the viewers to properly attend to their child and how to raise them in homes and at schools. It also gives children an idea of what their parents are going through.
SETTING The play is set here in the Philippines but it’s not specified on what place in the Philippines. It was done on Mothers day (May 9).
CHARACTERS JOSELLE – is a hardworking, loving and caring mother. She works a store and a mother of two. ROMY – is the husband of Joselle and is preoccupied with work therefore he isn’t home very often. ROSALIE – is the eldest son of Joselle and Romy. She is a teenager and is concerned about their dance competition. TONTON – is the youngest son of Joselle and Romy. He is in elementary and got into a fight with his classmate at school.
PLOT This play tells the story of Joselle, Romy, Rosalie and Tonton. The play starts off with Joselle selling her wares and tonton playing with his friends. Joselle gets annoyed with the noise they are making and spanks tonton. A customer saw Joselle spank tonton and tells her to stop because there are different ways to discipline a child. After that Joselle’s friend Inday offered her a job at Barcelona and told her the amount of money she could make. Joselle accepted the offer and started acquiring the documents needed. In the process of doing this, Joselle and Romy are having trouble attending to their child.
Joselle and Rosalie had a fight because she wasn’t permitted by Joselle to join the dance competition and when Rosalie discovered that they won, it made her even more angry. After that Rosalie and Tonton were talking about their parents. Rosalie tells tonton about how their parents were treating them and that she feels that she has no freedom. Overhearing their conversation, Joselle and Romy thought about how they could better themselves. Joselle decided to not go abroad but instead attend to her 2 children and make them happy.
THEME The main idea of this play is to show how hard our parents are working in order for us to have better lives. It teaches us that violence isn’t discipline but instead abuse. We musn’t confuse abuse and love.
REACTION The play was very enjoyable to watch. The main cast’s acting was very impressive because it seemed like they were really a family. They used lighting to fit the mood of the play by changing the color of the lights. Their costumes were well made. They also used special effects to make the play lively. The music aimed for the right places. I think that the message the play is trying to deliver was conveyed properly.
LESSONS LEARNED • We must appreciate our parents efforts and not let it go to waste. • I learned that there are more ways to discipline a child and that violence is not the solution. • We must love and respect our parents because if not for them we would’nt even be here. • I learned that when you talk about your problems to your family, it will be solved.
