New York State has recognized this mission and has awarded the new development NYSERDA’s Buildings of Excellence Award for 2019. New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) considers Convivium to be a model that is highly replicable and could be adopted broadly elsewhere to bring net-zero buildings to scale in New York State. The competition supports New York State’s climate and energy goals under Governor Cuomo’s Green New Deal, which puts the state on a path to economy-wide carbon neutrality and mandates an 85 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Passive House is a rigorous, voluntary standard for a building’s energy efficiency that reduces the building’s ecological footprint. There are five principles for which passive house building are based on: airtightness, ventilation, waterproofing, heating and cooling, and electrical loads.
