“How Can We Be People of The Story If We Don’t Know the Story?” By Pastor Wayne Zschech “Wayne, I think you should be a pastor.” That was what my fraternity brother and roommate told me in my junior year of college. We were both pre-med students. “Why on earth do you think I should be a pastor?” I replied (I thought he said itbecause biochemistry was really killing my GPA.) “Because you love to tell stories, and isn’t that what pastors do; tellstories?” He was right on both counts, and I’ll go one step further. Pastors aren’t the only ones who love to tell sto-ries. We all do.I recently attended a lecture by Dr. David Lose, president of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphiawhere he shared that human beings might be classified as home narrans, people of story. And when you think about ithe’s right because for almost all of us, stuff, only makes sense in story. How many times do you find yourself sayingto someone when you’re trying to explain something, “It’s like when So-And-So said/did this in the book/movie/play Such-And-Such.” Stuff only makes sense to us in story – including how our faith makes sense to us in daily life. Here’s the problem. If stuff only makes sense in story, what happens when we don’t know the story of our faith any-more or at best know it minimally? What happens when we don’t know the biblical stories of our faith? How canthey help us interpret and navigate the weekly stories of our lives? David Lose shared there three consequences of aChristian society that no longer knows the stories of faith. 1. Scripture loses its capacity to shape our performance identity. We can no longer see ourselves in the biblical story we’ve been told. 2. Scripture loses its capacity to provide “stories of reference.” We tell the stories we know well and if we don’t know the faith stories well, how can we ever say, “It’s like that story in the Bible when...?” 3. What goes on at church and in worship makes less and less sense when we don’t know the church/biblical stories. And like the disciples remained silent when they didn’t understand what Jesus had just said, we keep silent too. Why? Because we want to be polite in church, nobody wants to look like a dunce, and quite hon- estly, we’ve become accustomed to not understanding what goes on in church. What can be done about this? One simple answer; you can start reading, learning, and talking about the stories ofour faith. Read the Christ In Our Home devotional every day. Attend a Bible study. It might be at Our Savior. It may need to be someplace else when the date and time fit your schedule better. Volunteer to teach Sunday school once a month or even just assist. Rediscover the biblical stories of faith with our children who are learning them for the first time. Attend worship as often as you can and listen to the sermons. As pastor, my role is to help you answer the ques- tion, “Where do I see myself in this passage and is this passage active in my everyday life?” Parents, ask your children to tell you about the stories they learned in Sunday school or Vacation Church School and share your own insights and learnings.
