“’I’m So Done with Hypocritical Christians and the Church!’ What Do You Say After That?” By Pastor Wayne ZschechIt’s an awkward situation. You’re talking with a group of people or even one-on-one and the conversation suddenlyturns to religion. The next thing you know one of the people becomes visibly upset and even angry. “I’m so donewith those hypocritical Christians and the church!” And then they proceed to give a list of examples of how they’vebeen hurt by Christians and the institution of the Church. You’ve heard them. Sadly there are too many. What do you say after that? I would imagine most people would either say nothing or try to turn the conversation inanother direction. After all, they’ve already been offended by certain Christians and expressions of the Church andyou don’t want to risk making matters worse if you say the wrong thing.Maybe that’s why the problem continues to exist. Too many Christians in healthy and grace-filled congregations thatcontinue to participate in God’s way of life breaking into this world remain silent when hearing the pain of anotherperson who’s been burned by Christianity. Instead of remaining silent I wonder what would happen if we boldly be-gan to speak up and out in Christian love toward the other person. Here’s what I suggest you say the next time youhear someone “bashing” the church and Christians in general.1. Don’t Deny, Debate or Defend against their comment. Instead, you might say, “I hear what you’re saying and based on what I see and hear in the news and read in the magazines I can understand why you are saying this. I might even say it too.”2. Share Your Story. Do the Christians in this congregation behave like the statements made? Is our church like the church described? If not, you might say, “However, my experience has been different from yours. My church and the members of it are not like the ones you describe. Not all Christians and churches are like the ones you’ve experienced and mine certainly is not.”3. Invite Them to Risk a Different Experience. If you believe the ministry we do and are about at Our Savior, and the people who participate in it are authentic models of the love Christ calls us to live toward others, then end with this invitation. “If you ever want to experience a different perception of the Church and Christians, I invite you to join me for worship or a service event in the near future. I’d love to have you as my guest!”In these three phrases you affirmed their right to their perspective based on their experience, shared your alternativeperspective based on your experience, and invited them to experience it as well. You didn’t argue with them. Youdidn’t tell them what to believe. You affirmed them. You shared your story. And you invited them to join you in theexperience, maybe even this Easter!Imagine what might happen if we all became comfortable in sharing our faith in such a non-threatening and life af-firming way? Let me know how you make out. Bible Study on Book of “Exodus” Begins Apr 11/13Whether you grew up watching The Ten Commandments at Easter or the animated movie Prince ofEgypt, the story of Moses is generally known by Jews and Christians alike. So in the month whenour Jewish friends celebrate Passover, we will begin our study of the book of Exodus, in which itis contained, beginning on Monday, April 11. Join Pastor Wayne on either Monday nights from7:30-9:00 OR Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:00 for the study that begins the week of April11/13 and continues into the first week of June. 9 Received First Holy Communion in March Back on March 13, nine 2nd and 3rd grade youth received their first Holy Communion. The youth, and one or both of their parents, participated in a one day three-hour instruction period on the sacrament of “The Meal” in Lent. During the class they learned Holy Communion is a meal of thanksgiving, re- membrance, receiving God’s love and forgiveness with a physical element attached to make it more meaningful, and an expression of the community God’s people have through their baptism. The youth who participated in this instruction and who received their First Holy Communionwere: Alison Bogina, Mateo Bovell, Aaron Demers, Andrew Kiewel, Julianna Martinsen, Lily Morgan, Garrett Needham, ErinRyan, and McKayla Wilkers. Please remember all the youth and parents who participated in the process this year inyour prayers so the gift of God’s grace in the Meal may be meaningful throughout their lives.
