“Choose Life!” By Pastor Wayne Zschech On the eve of entering the Promised Land Moses shared God’s words to the people of Israel. “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity… Choose life so that your de- scendants may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him.” Choose life. Why would we ever NOT choose life? Yet, can our actions and words be always recognized as life- giving, life-empowering, or life-upholding? Maybe. Maybe not. What we do know is, by choosing tolove the Lord, observing God’s commands, and walking in God’s ways, our actions and words are more likely to bedeemed a choice for life. This month there are a lot of choices for giving, upholding, and empowering life, this congregation’s ministry, has tooffer that you can read more about in this edition of the Messenger. Here are a few to keep in mind.Mar 1: Ash Wednesday, we are reminded though we are dust, our Baptism promises new life.Mar 5: Learning Luther’s Small Catechism begins, aiding us in walking in God’s ways.Mar 6-12: Serving as Meal and Overnight Hosts for IHOC program- homeless men - contributes to the life-empoweringexperience these men have in their journey from homelessness.Mar 8: Lenten Midweek Soup & Discussion with Christ the King begins, providing Lutherans and Catholics an oppor-tunity to discuss the origins of our conflict and the life-giving progress of our journey toward unity and full communion.Mar 10: Speaker Rachel Held Evans shares her journey toward new life and relationship with God’s people as “thechurch” from her book Searching for Sunday.Mar 11: Speaker Tony Campolo shares the life-upholding aspects of faith that come from being engaged in the life ofthe faith community amidst the challenges of regular participation.Mar 25-26: Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack event provides 300,000 life-giving meals to starving children all overthe world.See, The Lutheran Church of Our Savior “has set before you life and prosperity” as well. This March is a month filledwith opportunities for not only your faith life and life in general to be enriched and upheld, but also opportunities foryou to be an agent of God’s life-giving power toward others by your actions and words. I hope you take advantage of atleast one of these life-changing, life-giving, and life-empowering experiences this month. Choose life, so that you maylive the life God desires us and our neighbors to live.Learning Luther’s Small Catechism Launches in Lent Through FAITH5 Home HuddlesAs parents hold their precious child clothed in a white gown next to the baptismal font the pastor asks them thefollowing along with other responsibilities. As you bring your children to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities:Teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,And nurture them in faith and prayer. When Martin Luther wrote his Small Catechism he intended it for the head of the household to use at home inproviding for the faith formation and enrichment of parents and children rather than to be taught by the pastor in Con-firmation classes. These “family home devotion times” were intended for nurturing one another in faith and prayeraround the contents of the Catechism.Beginning March 5, the First Sunday in Lent, Our Savior will embark on a 35-week journey of FamilyHome Huddles that focus on both learning the Small Catechism and enriching the relationships among fami-ly members using the FAITH5 method. Every Sunday begins a new week where households gather at dinner or be-fore the first person goes to bed to engage in the following five Faith Acts In The Home.1. SHARE the best and worst part of your day with others in your family.2. READ the portion of Luther’s Small Catechism assigned for the week each night.3. TALK about how that reading might relate to your high or low or your life in general.4. PRAY for another’s high and low.5. BLESS one another with the assigned blessing for the week.If each household commits to this daily practice two things will happen. First, family members will become closer toeach other relationally as a result of nurturing and praying for one another. Second, both children, parents and adults willknow or remember the Small Catechism by Reformation Sunday and our Anniversary Celebration Dinner.Don’t have Luther’s Small Catechism? Pastor Wayne has purchased Study Editions for every household to useand they can be picked up at church either in the narthex or in the church office along with a schedule of what READsegment of the Catechism is scheduled for each week. It will also be posted on our website. Pick up your copy on Sun-day while at worship or during the week and get ready for an inspiring journey into the lives of your family members anddeeper understanding of the tenets of our faith. Any youth who will be 15 or older in 2017, along with his/her parents, is encouraged to attend this highly informational meeting about an event that has literally changed thelives of youth and adults participating. The dates for the SMT are scheduled for July 8-16 and the group looksforward to working again with the Goldsboro-Wayne Habitat for Humanity in Goldsboro North Carolina. Over the last 10 years participants have framed floors, walls and roofs, installed siding and porch railings, built a handicap ramp, large sheds, painted doors and trim, landscaped, and even shingled a roof!. We typically stay in a church or ministry related building, sleeping on the floor and making our own meals while also enjoying some fun time in the evening. We hold one or two fundraisers prior to departure in order to make a donation of $1,500-$2,500 as a gift to HFH that goes toward building materials. Parents ought to consider also participating regardless of your construction skills. Some adult volunteers have shopped and cooked rather than be on the jobsite, which greatly facilitates our time after work for devotions and fun activities. As mentioned above, it is a life changing event for any and all who participate. Come out on Sunday night, March 5 at 6:30pm and find out how. March 2017 Messenger page 4

ASH WEDNESDAY WORSHIP MAR 1@ NOON & 7:30; “WALK DUSTY” IS LENTEN THEME Ash Wednesday worship has long heralded the beginning of Lent. On Mar 1 at both Noon and 7:30PM The Lutheran Church of Our Savior will hold this worship service of confession, reflection, and the imposition of ashes to begin the Lenten journey to- ward Holy Week and Easter. In these days we need a reminder of hope as we rush from one place to the next. So, for the third year Pastor Wayne Zschech and any who choose to join him will be offering the imposition of ashes downtown near Starbucks in an “Ash & Dash Experience” from 3:00-4:00 on March 1. We plan to have a “Walk Dusty” banner displayed (if allowed) and wear “Walk Dusty” buttons while making ourselves availa-ble to impose ashes. Contact Pastor Wayne if you want to join him on Ash Wednesday downtown. This ancient ritual is filled with spiritual significance for Christians. Here are the main ones. “Remember you aredust, and to dust you shall return.” These are the words spoken by the pastor as an ashen cross is smudged on one’s brow.Like the words spoken at a funeral committal, ashes are a reminder of our mortality and finitude. They remind us we can-not escape death, no matter how hard we may try to keep it at arm’s length or deny its reality in our lives. Ashes remind us that at one time they were rubbed on one’s skin to eliminate hard to remove dirt. Lent is also atime of cleansing and renewal. We pray along with the psalmist to “create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a rightspirit within me”, and are reminded of God’s cleansing Spirit of renewal in our lives. Finally, because the smudged cross is made with ashes mixed with oil, we are reminded of the mark with oil placedon our brow at baptism. We remember the promise we were given, “Child of God, you have been sealed with the HolySpirit, and marked with the cross of Christ forever.” In the waters of baptism we have been joined to both the death andresurrection of Jesus Christ. And while the ashes remind us of our eventual death, the smudged cross reminds us deathdoes not have the last word. As people “of the smudge” we are people who trust in the resurrection to new life it offersthrough faith in the risen Christ. In Lent we journey both toward the cross and the empty tomb. And this gives us hope. WORD (AND ASHES) ON THE STREET: AN ASHES TO GO STORYA few months ago at the Haddonfield Fall Festival, a woman askedme if we were the church that did Ashes To Go on Ash Wednesday. When I said yes, she got very excited and asked me to thank PastorWayne for doing the project and shared with me that she and herdaughter were on the way to the hospital for a serious surgery on AshWednesday. While in the car, her daughter said that she was sad thatthey couldn’t get ashes since instead of going to church, they had togo to the hospital. It was then that they saw Pastor Wayne, and wereable to get ashes on the go! Her daughter said she felt much morepeaceful going into the surgery after this experience.Want to be part of the Ashes to Go team for Wednesday, March 1?Contact the church for more information.March 2017 Messenger page 5

Following the 30 minute preaching service provided by a different Haddonfield pastoreach week, participants are invited to enjoy a soup lunch in Grace Church’s Fellowship Hall. This year, the theme is based on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s book, “The Cost of Discipleship.” Using the Sermon on theMount as his text, Bonhoeffer challenges us to think about what it means to be a Christian, a disciple and ethical de-mands of being a follower of Jesus Christ. His book was written in the 1930’s during the rise of the Nazi movementin Germany. It has a timeless quality and will provide us with deep reflection on what it means to be a Christian todayin our world. Bonhoeffer’s book speaks about grace, the costs for following Christ and more. The topics for eachTuesday’s sermons are as follows: Matthew 4:12-22Mar 3 Grace & DiscipleshipMar 14 Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:1-12Mar 21 Hidden Character of the Christian Life Matthew 6:1-18 (Pastor Wayne)Mar 28 The Separation of the Disciple Community Matthew 7:1-12Apr 4 The Messengers Matthew 9:35-38Apr 11 The Church of Jesus Christ & Life of Discipleship March 2017 Messenger page 11

February started off with a bang with the Super Bowl Party. We got together, ate a lot of food, played games, and watched some football. I would like to extend a big thanks to the Confirmation Parents who helped put that party all together! Youth group also enjoyed some spontaneous trips to Starbucks on a Sunday night. On the 19th we had the Confirmation class join us as we tie dyed shirts together. We capped it off by listening to Jonathan Rundman when he came here for concert on the 25th. February was a good month and we look to continually build upon our growth. Here is what March looks like: March 5th – High Elevation Trip (Right after church). This willkeep you up to date will all upcoming events and announce any changes to the schedule. Any questions contact our Director of Youth and Family Faith at [email protected] or 856-889-1718FAITH FORMATIONOne of the main things I was brought on to do in this church was tohelp create and improve our Family Faith Formation here at Our Savior. I fig-ured a great way to start to get into the Faith Formation was to dive a littledeeper into my own story. I was born and raised Catholic and attended a Catho-lic school from Kindergarten all the way through my Senior Year of highschool. I even was an altar boy, the Catholic version of an acolyte, in middleschool and sporadically in high school. I sang in the school-church choir attimes. I was very involved with many activities that promoted giving back andvolunteering. On the surface, I was an involved Catholic kid. Yet while I was inhigh school, I generally stopped caring about religion and stopped going tochurch on Sundays and only went Wednesday when my school forced us to go to mass. All that time I spent ingrade school and high school learning about the stories never did too much for my faith at the time. I tended tojust check the boxes and head home, I missed out on youth group, mission trips, and being a part of a solid churchcommunity. So from my own testimony I know how powerful at home Faith Formation can be. Parents spendingtime with their kids to talk about Sunday School lessons or the message from Pastor on Sunday can really expandtheir Faith. Just being at church did not give me a real relationship with God. I would even say that I finally com-mitted myself to God was my Freshmen year of college. I know that as a parent it can be hard to get to church onSunday mornings with the millions of things your children can be involved in. I just want to stress how rewardingit can be to talk about God and your faith at home to your kids. In the upcoming year we hope to be able to helpyou along that journey so you won’t be alone. A great place to start is the Faith5, sharing your highs and lows, reading a verse from your bible, talking about how it relates to your life, pray for one another, and bless one anoth-er. These are small, easy, and quick things you can do with your kids to help develop their Faith Formation.Jack Broomell - Director of Youth and Family Ministry March 2017 Messenger page 14
