“MEETING THE BISHOP’S CATECHISM CHALLENGE” By Pastor Wayne Zschech January is a time for resolutions. We resolve to improve our physical health by making healthy choices when it comes to what we eat and how we exercise. We resolve to improve our mental health by watch- ing less TV, reading more, taking a class. We resolve to improve our spiritual health with a practice of daily devotions or going to worship more often. We resolve to improve our emotional health by spend-ing more time in nurturing our relationships with family and friends through intentional gatherings or shared events.Yet, I sometimes wonder if the reason our resolutions often don’t become a long-term reality is because there really isn’ta goal these new practices are leading toward.Enter Bishop Eaton’s Challenge last October when she encouraged ELCA congregations to learn and memorize Lu-ther’s Small Catechism by Reformation Sunday 2017. That’s the goal. Here’s the holistic way to achieve it that addressesyou and your familie’s mental, spiritual, and emotional health and well-being all that the same time. Every night in everyhome before the first person goes to bed the family, even if it’s just two people, spends 10-15 minutes in a FAITH5Home Huddle using the Luther’s Small Catechism that will be available to every family at this year’s January 29 AnnualMeeting as an Anniversary gift. It would look like this.1. SHARE the best and worst part of your day with other members of the family.2. READ the assigned portion of Luther’s Small Catechism for the week. It will be the same every night for the weekto help the memorization process.3. TALK about how that reading might relate to your high or low or other aspect of your life.4. PRAY for each other’s high and low of the day5. BLESS one another with the assigned blessing for the week. Each week a new FAITH5 Reading from the Small Catechism and Blessing will be provided both as an insert in theweekly worship bulletin and posted online on our website for those unable to attend worship that week. The Readingswill be spaced out so that by our 90th Anniversary Celebration there will be a little contest to see how well our congrega-tion has learned Luther’s Small Catechism. How does this benefit you mentally, spiritually, and emotionally? Think about it.Mental Health: You would be memorizing The Ten Commandments, Creed, and Lord’s Prayer and Luther’s explana-tion of each one and it’s components as well as his explanation about our two sacraments of Baptism and Holy Com-munion. That’s improving your mental health and also giving you the ability to talk about the core elements of our faithfrom a Lutheran perspective than what you remember from your confirmation days.Spiritual Health: You will be praying for those in your family, be they in the living room, bedroom or over the phonein whatever room you and they are in. When was the last time you prayed for someone out loud in your home?Emotional Health: Imagine hearing and sharing the highs and lows of you and your family’s lives each night and howthat would draw you closer as a family. Imagine doing this with your friends when gathering for a cup of coffee or goingout to lunch. Your relationships will take on a new level of depth and sincerity.Jack Broomell, our new Director of Family Ministry, and I will be leading seminars in January and February to guide thecongregation in how to make FAITH5 Home Huddles a daily practice in your households this year, and we hope youwill take advantage of participating in this New Year healthy resolution and challenge by our Presiding Bishop ElizabethEaton. We look forward to seeing how well we do next October at the Anniversary Dinner. Until then may this 90th An-niversary Year be one where we as a congregation grow closer to our Lord and Savior and live out our mission and min-istry more vibrantly than before.BIBLE DISCUSSION FOR DAILY LIFE BEGINS JAN 9/11; LEVITICUS (7 WEEKS)The events of Leviticus take place after the Exodus of Egypt and the giving of the Law at Sinai, and concern the formal-izing of Israelite religious practice. It's not a building, or a denomination, or a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. THE GIFT OF EDUCATION LCOS SUPPORTS URBAN PROMISE COLLEGE STUDENTSBelieving that one person, given the opportunity, can make a difference in the world, Our Savior’s Social MinistryCommittee and Memorial Gifts Board have collaborated to provide $1000.00 annual scholarships to students active-ly involved with Urban Promise Ministries in Camden who are continuing their education beyond high school.Since 2009 eleven students have been awarded scholarships. Three of those received the maximum $4000.00 forfour years. Recipients must be enrolled full-time in a university, college, or trade school and must maintain a mini-mum GPA. The scholarships are made possible through an endowment fund established with generous bequests bythe families of Bernadine Plotzke and Jean Patterson. Our Savior is currently sponsoring five students.Derjanai Thomas: second year at Coppin State.Ashley Williams: second year at Harris School of BusinessPierre Joseph: first year at Albright CollegeNioshjah (Nye) Lindsey: first year at King UniversityKumarr Clark: senior at Rowan University Meet two of these five young people in their own words below: Dear Church of Our Savior, My name is Pierre Joseph. I am a graduating senior at Collingswood. I was born in Haiti and moved to the United States when I was five. In high school I have partic- ipated in a number of activities. Some of these included varsity sports and school productions. I am also involved in a non-profit organization named UrbanPromise and have been since the first grade. I have attended their summer camps, after school programs and have been employed by them. You could say that I’m a lifer at UrbanPromise. I plan on attending Albright College in Reading, PA this fall (2016). I plan on studying biology on a pre-med track. My dream is to be a doctor and be able to help out those in need. I would like to offer my sincerest thanks and grati- tude for your support. In life it is always great to have someone believe in you and assist you when you need it. Thank you for believing in me. Sincerely, Pierre B. JosephTo whom it may Concern,My name is Kumarr Clark and I’ve been around UrbanPromise for quite a while. I started attending the summercamps back in 1995 when we only had a couple of beat up vans and four campsites. I remember attending a pancakebreakfast at a church that had a piece of plywood and a crate as a basketball hoop, and since then I’ve been a part ofan organization that I’m proud to call home. I currently attend Rowan University for Radio, Television and FilmProduction and will be graduating this December (2016) with a Bachelors Degree in TV Film production concentra-tion. My plans for the upcoming summer are to help out with Camp Truth in Trenton, NJ, where we will providechildren with a safe environment to have fun and be kids. I like working with the youth in the inner city because itgives me a chance to give back to the organization. UrbanPromise is a place where children can have fun in a safeenvironment and make connections with people that will last a lifetime. Also, I’m going to do an internship atWHYY where I will be helping middle and high school children produce films for the summer program the compa-ny offers. When I graduate, I plan to work behind the scenes of a news studio in the Philadelphia area or maybework for WHYY when all goes well. I would like to thank the Lutheran Church of Our Savior for granting me ascholarship that will help me greatly for this last fall semester. Once again thank you and I greatly appreciate it. Sincerely Yours, Kumarr Clark January 2017 Messenger Page 7

UNITY & FELLOWSHIP SUNDAY SET FOR JAN 29; COMBINED WORSHIP @ 9:30 FOLLOWED BY BRUNCH AND ANNUAL MEETING It worked so well last year we’re doing it again! On Sunday, January 29 Our Savior will hold one worship service at 9:30 so members from the various reg- ular three worship times can worship together as one congregation. Immedi- ately following worship the congregation will move to the Parish Hall for a sumptuous brunch prior to the Annual Meeting that will follow. There will be separate activities for children on the 3rd Floor while parents participate in the Annual Meeting scheduled to end by noon. Why the repeat?1. It creates the opportunity for the congregation to truly worship as a unified body of Christ rather than asegmented one.2. It provides members who regularly attend one service the opportunity to meet and enjoy fellowship withregular members of the other worship services. Members with children in Sunday afternoon activities can participate in the Annual Meeting, especially as we will be discussing the implications of Pastor Wayne’s sabbatical and role that Director of Youth and Family Ministry, Jack Broomell, will have in revitalizing the faith formation ministry of our con- gregation. The Council realizes this may be an inconvenience for some, especially those who will need to get children upand ready for worship and Sunday school 60 minutes earlier, but also believe the benefit will greatly outweighthe cost. It is their sincere hope as many of the congregation will mark their calendars to attend this year’sUnity Fellowship Sunday Worship and Annual Meeting on January 29 with worship at 9:30 and brunch fol-lowing immediately afterward. At the Annual Meeting the main topics of discussion will include: The status of our faith formation ministry led by our new Director of Youth and Family Ministry, Jack Broomell, and goals for new initiatives in 2017 as regular Sunday school participation has dropped off considerably over the past few years. The various events and ministry opportunities to celebrate 90 years of mission and ministry at Our Savior during our 90th Anniversary year. A congregation-wide initiative to learn and memorize Luther’s Small Catechism by Reformation Sunday through Home FAITH5 daily devotions that includes a gift copy. Also, four Congregation Council members and two members of the Memorial Gifts Board will need to be elected by a quorum of the congregation to serve three and four year terms respectively. Thankfully, Laurie Eason (Secretary), and Glenn Martin (Property) have agreed to serve another term on Council so only two nominees are needed to serve in the areas of Fellowship and Christian Education. We give our most heartfelt thanks to Brian Bell (Christian Education) and Amal Spence (Fellowship/Youth) who are going off at the end of their term. Additionally, Paul Knauer and Jack Berrigan will be going off Memorial Gift Board after two consecutive four-year terms (and Paul served two additional years of an unexpired term for a total of 10 years!). Warren Reintzel has agreed to become a nominee and another nominee is still needed. Finally, the 2017 Financial Plan for Ministry will be voted on. The final Financial Plan will not be fully prepared until after the January Council meeting, and the Congregation Resources ministry team is confident the 2017 Ministry Fall Campaign commitments along with estimated giving from non- pledging members will meet the challenge for supporting our current and future ministry in 2017.So MARK JAN 29 ON YOUR NEW CALENDARS NOW FOR 9:30 WORSHIP & BRUNCH/ANNUAL MEETING
