“Forty Days of F.A.I.T.H. 5 (Faith Acts In The Home)” By Pastor Wayne Zschech There are a lot of challenges that churches often pose to congregations during Lent. Coin banks to hold change of Lenten self-denial offerings that go to Lutheran World Hunger. Giving up chocolate, Facebook, watching TV, or some other guilty (or not so guilty) pleasure in order to experience the penitential practice of fasting during Lent’s forty days (notice we don’t actually ask you to give up food itself for one day each week to experience actual fasting). Others collect food, collect clothes,or collect money as almsgiving offering to the less fortunate in our area.I have a challenge of my own. I invite you to join me in adding to your daily lives as I intend to add to mine and myfamily’s during the forty days of Lent. It’s called Home Huddles. My friend Rev. Dr. Rich Melheim of Faith Inkuba-tors came up with the practice. A Home Huddle is really a Faith Act In The Home and includes five parts; share, read, talk, pray and bless. For short it’s called The FAITH 5. It takes about 10 minutes at the end of the day, but itwell might be the best 10 minutes you spend all day. Here’s how it goes.1. The person who goes to bed the earliest gets to call the Home Huddle and designate where and when it will happen.2. Every member of the family unplugs from the world in order to plug into God and family.3. Each person SHARES their High and Low, the best and worst part, of their day with everyone else in the Huddle.4. Someone READS one of the lessons from Sunday’s worship service. It’s okay to read it more than once or twice during the week.5. Each person TALKS about how God’s word might relate to their High or Low.6. Each person PRAYS for the person on their right about their High and Low (My hope and prayer for Family Member is…)7. The person who prayed for you traces a sign of the cross on your forehead in order to BLESS you at the end of each day. That’s it! How hard is that?Someone traveling in the family and is not at home? Face Time or Skype with them or simply call them on theirphone. Imagine the impact this would make for a child to know that mom or dad stopped what they were doing atwork to spend time in a Home Huddle?Live alone? Invite your family who live elsewhere to make the commitment to Home Huddle with you across themiles during Lent. If they don’t want to, remember we have a lot of “family” at Our Savior who can Home Huddlewith you.I’ll get a bunch of bookmarks with the FAITH 5 steps and instructions by Transfiguration Sunday, Feb 7. We’ll putthem on our website as well, along with each Sunday’s readings. Imagine how this might change the relationships inyour family members with each other? Imagine how it might change you and your family’s faith walk not only inLent but beyond? It takes about 40 days to learn and establish a new practice or habit. Why not try Forty Days ofFAITH 5 Home Huddles in Lent. It’s easier than giving up chocolate if you ask me. Blessings along the way! Genesis Bible Discussion Continues Through Until Apr 5; Online Discussion Coming Soon!Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Jacob, Joseph and his brothersare all main characters in God’s story with humanity found in the first book of the Bible. Ash Wednesday Worship Feb 10 @ Noon & 7:30; “Walk Dusty” is Lenten Theme Ash Wednesday worship has long heralded the beginning of Lent. On Feb 10 at bothNoon and 7:30PM The Lutheran Church of Our Savior will hold this worship service ofconfession, reflection, and the imposition of ashes to begin the Lenten journey towardHoly Week and Easter. This ancient ritual is filled with spiritual significance for Christians. Here are the main ones. “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” These are the words spoken bythe pastor as an ashen cross is smudged on one’s brow. Like the words spoken at a funeral committal, ashes are a re-minder of our mortality and finitude. They remind us we cannot escape death, no matter how hard we may try to keepit at arm’s length or deny its reality in our lives. Ashes remind us that at one time they were rubbed on one’s skin to eliminate hard to remove dirt. Lent is alsoa time of cleansing and renewal. We pray along with the psalmist to “create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew aright spirit within me”, and are reminded of God’s cleansing Spirit of renewal in our lives. Finally, because the smudged cross is made with ashes mixed with oil, we are reminded of the mark with oilplaced on our brow at baptism. We remember the promise we were given, “Child of God, you have been sealed withthe Holy Spirit, and marked with the cross of Christ forever.” In the waters of baptism we have been joined to boththe death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And while the ashes remind us of our eventual death, the smudged crossreminds us death does not have the last word. As people “of the smudge” we are people who trust in the resurrectionto new life it offers through faith in the risen Christ. In Lent we journey both toward the cross and the empty tomb. And this gives us hope. Last year Vicar Lisa Jester invited members to join her at the Starbucks corner of King’s Highway to imposeashes on pedestrians and motorists stopped at the light who desired it. The offer was well received by many. As a re-sult, from 3:00-4:00 Pastor Wayne Zschech and any others who choose to join him will be offering the imposi-tion of ashes downtown again by Starbucks. We plan to have a “Walk Dusty” banner displayed (if allowed) andwear “Walk Dusty” buttons while making ourselves available to impose ashes. Contact Pastor Wayne if you want tojoin him on Ash Wednesday downtown. “Open My Life, Lord” Midweek Lenten Soup Dinner/Cross+Gen Experience Theme Imagine a time during Lent where children, parents, adults without children, and seniors gather for a midweekmeal and during that time participate in the following “worship” experience every Wednesday beginning at 6:00 inLent. Every table has a person from each of the above generations. Each table must have all four (if possible) in order to go up for soup. You SHARE the best and worst part of your week with another person at the table. God’s word is READ. You TALK with the person next to you on how that word speaks to your life. You PRAY for that other person, lifting up the best and worst part of their week. You BLESS each other. That’s the FAITH 5 Experience and it is the model we will be using for sharing the Midweek Lenten Series: Open MyLife, Lord. Each week there will be a different focus for children, youth and adults to think about during dinner andwhen they talk at their table. Here’s the schedule.Feb 17 – Open My Eyes, Lord: What changes when we view life through the eyes of Christ?Feb 24 – Open My Hands, Lord: How do we use our hands to reveal and share God’s grace?Mar 2 – Open My Ears, Lord: How can we listen more and talk less with others and God?Mar 9 – Open My Heart, Lord: How can our hearts be attentive to other’s needs around us?Mar 16 – Open My Life, Lord: What does a transformed life in Christ look like? Why make time for the Midweek Soup Dinner & Cross+Gen Experience? First, it is a worship experience andfor some it may be the only day in the week they can attend worship. Second, it will create and nurture relationshipsamong the members of the congregation across generational lines. Third, it will keep us centered in Christ and his jour-ney to the cross and empty tomb in Lent. And lastly, it will provide those participating with a simple model for worshipin the home every night that will nurture faith and prayer within the family by learning the FAITH (Faith Acts In TheHome) 5 of Share, Read, Talk, Pray and Bless. Mark your calendars. Plan to attend. And if any want to make soup forone of the nights contact Sandy in the church office to get you on the schedule. Blessings in your Lenten journey what-ever your practice may be.
