Luther’s Catechism – A Handbook for the Household By Pastor Wayne Zschech When parents bring their child to the font one of the responsibilities they promise to keep is to “teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments.” These three tenets of the Christian faith make up the core of the Luther’s Small Catechism along with the Sacraments of Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The teaching of the catechism by parents and pastors has been a key element in the Lutheran Church since 1529 when Martin Luther first wrote the Small Cate-chism. What you may not know is why he wrote it. He wrote in the preface,“The deplorable, wretched deprivations that I recently encountered while I was a visitor has constrained and compelled me to prepare this cate-chism, or Christian instruction, in such a brief, plain, and simple version. Dear God, what misery I beheld! The ordinary person, especially invillages, knows absolutely nothing about the Christian faith, and unfortunately many pastors are completely unskilled and incompetent teach-ers. Yet supposedly they all bear the name Christian, are baptized, and receive the holy sacrament, even though they do not know the Lord’sPrayer, the Creed, or the Ten Commandments! As a result they live like simple cattle or irrational pigs and, despite the fact the gospel hasreturned, have mastered the fine art of misusing their freedom.”Now while my room as a boy was often referred to as a pig sty and I was (and sometimes still am) accused of chewinglike a cow I’m sure my parents didn’t want me to behave like cattle or an irrational pig when it came to living my life as aChristian. Neither did Martin Luther, which is why he introduced each individual part of the Small Catechism with thephrase, “…in a simple way in which the head of a house is to present them to the household.” In a sermon delivered inNovember 1528 Luther addressed fathers and mothers by saying, “Every father of a family is bishop in his house andthe wife a bishopess. Therefore remember that you in your homes are to help us carry on the ministry we do in thechurch” (LW 51:137).Believe it or not, the same is true today. The various faith formation ministry programs at Our Savior are intended notto be the sole means by which children come to know about the Christian faith and what it means to follow Christ inmission and ministry. It begins in the home. It begins with teaching our children the parts of the Small Catechism. Andyou don’t have to wait until they are twelve years old to begin the process. It’s why we give parents a pocket Small Cate-chism when their children are baptized, so that as their children grow they may learn from mom and dad first and fore-most to recite the Lord’s Prayer, Creed and Commandments from memory as well as begin to learn what each partmeans. In doing so, parents are faithful to the responsibilities they promised they would keep when they answered, “Wewill with God’s help.”October 31, 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. It wasn’t intended to create a break in the Church butrather an opportunity for reform within the Church. Luther championed parents reclaiming their role as the primarymodels and formers of their children’s faith as well as the local pastor. A decade later he provided the Small Catechismas a way for parents to participate in that faith forming process. As we commemorate the Reformation this anniversaryyear I encourage us all to dust off our Small Catechisms and learn again what Luther taught about the basic tenets of ourfaith. After all, we don’t want to live as cattle or irrational pigs now do we? Let the Small Catechism become your house-hold’s handbook for Christian life. Special Event Sponsored by the Hunger Task GroupOn Saturday October 7, Dr. Ryan Cumming, Director of Hunger Education for the ELCA will be speaking on “TheForgotten Luther; Reclaiming the Social-Economic Dimension of the Reformation.” To be held at St. Paul LutheranChurch, 79 One Mile Rd. Memorial Gifts Board Provides $2,500 Support to Interfaith Caregivers; Interfaith Caregivers Plans Volunteer Training Event at LCOS in OctoberIn support of Our Savior’s strategic initiative to foster a greater connection between the senior com-munity of the “Haddons” and our congregation, the Memorial Gifts Board provided a $2,500 dona-tion to Interfaith Caregivers of Haddonfield. Interfaith Caregiver volunteers provide a variety of ser-vices to seniors living in Haddonfield and Haddon Heights including grocery shopping, companion-ship, and for the greatest part driving seniors to various appointments. Volunteer drivers are in greatneed at this time as there are 30 seniors currently on the waiting list and after the Volunteer Expo on Rally Day nine mem-bers of Our Savior signed up to be trained as an IFC volunteer. That number enables an IFC Volunteer Training Event tobe held at Our Savior this October a date yet to be determined as of the printing of this article. Check our website, theweekly worship bulletin, and the local newspapers for the date and time. Memorial Gifts Provides 90th Anniversary Blueprint Sponsorship for Camden HFH; 10 Volunteers Needed for October 21 WorkdayIn celebration of Our Savior’s 90-Year Legacy of Mission and Ministry the Memorial Gift Board ap-proved the Anniversary Committee’s recommendation to provide a Blueprint Sponsorship ($2,500) tothe Camden chapter of Habitat for Humanity. This sponsorship allows Our Savior to have a workday at one of the build-ing sites for a group of up to 10 volunteers scheduled for Saturday, October 21. Those desiring to participate are asked tocontact Sandy DeDonatis or Pastor Wayne Zschech. The ten workday volunteers are to gather at Our Savior by 8:30 and will travel by the church van to the site located at 637Clinton Street in Camden and arrive by the 9:00 start time. We will be working on some demolition and framing a powderroom along with other tasks not yet determined so the skill set needed is the ability to destroy, read a measuring tape, andhow to hammer a nail. We will need to provide our own lunch so if there is a family in the congregation that would like tovolunteer and prepare lunch for the team that would be wonderful as well! We will begin clean-up at 3:30 and back to OurSavior by around 4:15. Our hope is by our work with the Camden HFH this anniversary year we will begin an annual sup-port of the local chapter with a workday each year. On the day a child is baptized, parents promise to one day place in their child’s hands God’s Holy Scriptures. On October 29, Reformation Sunday, the parents of third grade children will make good on that promise as they present their chil- dren with their first Bible at a special blessing during the 10:30 worship service. Third Graders who will receive their Bibles are Chase Adams, Juliana and Robert DeNinno, Ryan Ewing, Jack Fetter, Addison Gebhart, Thomas Gonzalez, Sophia Pineiro, and Aiden Visconti.Back on Sep 17, those same parents and children gathered for a preparation class on the importance of studyingGod’s word of the Bible in a disciple’s daily life. Parents and children will highlight key passages in each book ofthe new Spark Bible (NRSV) the children will be receiving each night using the FAITH5 model for Family HomeHuddles. Parents will also write a dedication to their child inside the Bible. The Spark Bible was chosen for itsfocus on teaching children how to read, understand, and reflect on God’s Word WHILE they are reading the Bi-ble. LCOS Memorabilia Coffee HourAs part of our 90th Anniversary Celebration we are having a special Coffee Hour on Sunday, No-vember 12th.
