“Sweat the Small Stuff – It Matters; Share Your Care Ministry Makes a Difference” By Pastor Wayne Zschech Whether it’s a hand-written note from someone you know saying, “I was thinking of you and thought I’d write a quick note to let you know how much I appreciate you in my life” or someone who sends a text reading “Thinking of U :) ” we get the same response. “Someone cares about me! My life matters!” We feel good. We feelconnected. We feel assured that our life makes a difference at least in the life of that other person and if you are onFacebook, Instagram, Snapchat or the host of other social networks offered on the internet, the ability to poke, post,or message someone letting them know you are thinking of them is seemingly endless. Of course, we could alwayscall them. With all of these means of communicating with people available to us it seems like we would have notrouble in letting members of the congregation know we miss them and care about their well-being if we haven’tseen them for a while in worship, Sunday school or other ministry events. Yet, do we? I’ve seen how well we em-brace and welcome people we haven’t seen for a while when they return, but have we shared that care for them inthe meantime? Here are some reasons I’ve heard people don’t;  “I don’t know their name so I can’t look them up in the directory.”  “I don’t want them to feel guilty for not being in church.”  “Isn’t that the pastor’s job?”  “I just assumed they were traveling or busy with other commitments.”Granted, all of these are legitimate reasons (except the third one!) for not reaching out, but here are the responses Igive to each.  “Next time you see them introduce yourself saying, ‘I don’t know if I’ve ever shared my name but I’m NAME.’ and they will likely respond in sharing theirs. Then WRITE IT DOWN so you don’t forget be- fore you get home.”  “Contact them and simply say, ‘I haven’t seen you for a while and just wanted to say I miss you and hope you are well.’ No judgment in that, just genuine care and concern.”  “A call from a fellow parishioner sharing their care for not seeing them is far more appreciated than a call from the pastor from whom they would expect it.”  “They may have been, but even if they were when you share your care for them they know their presence among the congregation is appreciated and valued. If they were gone because of illness or crisis you are able to share your concern more immediately and then with me or other staff.”We all hear the adage “Don’t sweat the small stuff” all the time, but when it comes to sharing our care for membersof the body of Christ, it is well worth it. So much so that I’m renewing our Share Your Care theme we had a fewyears ago as a ministry that reaches out to members we haven’t seen for a month or so in worship or other ministryevents to let them know they are missed. This team of people will have two priorities. 1. Assist the general membership in being able to identify and contact members they miss from worship and ministry so they know how much we care about them. 2. Work with me in contacting those, staff and I identify as having been absent for a month or so, simply to let them know we do miss them and their presence and participation is appreciated.Want to be a part of this Share Your Care team? Let me know! Starting this month we’ll begin to identify who wehaven’t seen for some time or who we know would appreciate regular contact and caring conversation. Check thebox on the Communication Card, email me, Facebook message me, drop me a note, or simply call me to let meknow and we’ll get started in the New Year letting people know how much we truly do miss their presence in the lifeof the congregation. Blessings to you all in 2016.SHARE YOUR CARE January, 2016 Messenger page 2

Unity & Fellowship Sunday Set for Jan 31; Combined Worship @ 9:00 Followed by Brunch and Annual Meeting On Sunday, January 31, Our Savior will hold one worship service at 9:00 so members from the various regular three worship times can worship together as one congregation. Immediately following worship, the congregation will move to the Parish Hall for a sumptuous brunch pri-or to the Annual Meeting that will follow. There will be separate activities for children on the 3rd Floor while parentsparticipate in the Annual Meeting scheduled to end by noon. Why the change? 1. It creates the opportunity for the congregation to truly worship as a unified body of Christ rather than a segmented one. 2. It provides members who regularly attend one service, the opportunity to meet and enjoy fellowship with regular members of the other worship services. 3. Members with children in Sunday afternoon activities can participate in the Annual Meeting, especially as we will be discussing the hiring of a Director of Youth and Family Ministry. The Council realizes this may be an inconvenience for some, especially those who will need to get children up andready for worship and Sunday school 90 minutes earlier, but also believe the benefit will greatly outweigh the cost. It istheir sincere hope as many of the congregation will mark their calendars to attend this year’s Unity Fellowship SundayWorship and Annual Meeting on January 31 with worship at 9:00 and brunch following immediately afterward. This year’s meeting will again prove to be an interesting one as the main discussion will involve the creation of a newpaid staff position of a Director of Youth and Family Ministry who would oversee and facilitate the Faith SteppingStones and Youth Ministry programs and in time develop a Young Adult ministry. This is the next step in Our Savioraddressing the growing population of families with school age children in our area as well as the large young adult pop-ulation within the surrounding community. Also, five Congregation Council members and two members of theMemorial Gifts Board will need to be elected by a quorum of the congregation to serve three and four year termsrespectively. Thankfully, Judy Caravelli (Communications), Nancy Frazier (Outreach), and Laura Oakes(Congregation Resources) have agreed to serve another term on Council and Cathe Bare (Worship & Music) hasagreed to complete an unexpired term she has been filling so only one nominee is needed to serve in the area of Finan-cial Secretary. We give our most heartfelt thanks to Jane Evans (Financial Secretary) who is going off at the end ofher term. Additionally, Mike Fallon (Chair) and Bob Mirabello (Recording Secretary) have agreed to serve a sec-ond term on the Memorial Gift Board so no nominees are needed. Finally, the 2016 Financial Plan for Ministry will be voted on. The final Financial Plan will not be fully prepareduntil after the January Council meeting, and the Congregation Resources ministry team is confident the 2016 MinistryFall Campaign commitments along with estimated giving from non-pledging members will meet the challenge for sup-porting our current and future ministry in 2016.
