MeThsesPaerisnh ger JULY/AUGUST 2016 NEWSLETTER THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF OUR SAVIOR HADDONFIELD, NJ The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Savior is a faith community that worships Jesus as our Lord, proclaims and shares God's Word, welcomes all people, serves human needs, and nurtures personal and spiritual growth through fellowship all to the glory of God.

“50 Dead, 53 Wounded – What’s Next?” By Pastor Wayne Zschech The news assaults our hearts and our heads like a ton of bricks. Saturday night, while most of us slept, a massacre occurred in Orlando, the place most of us associate with laughter, life and joy. It’s the largest death toll due to gunviolence in the history of our country. 50 dead. 53 wounded. What’s next? What are we to do? Will any of it make adifference? On Monday, June 13, Pastor Ryan Paetzold of Trinity Lutheran Church in Audubon held a prayer vigil as did manyother churches in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area as well as across the nation. Bishop Tracie Bartholomewwrote a letter to clergy of the New Jersey Synod encouraging us and our congregations to; Gather with friends and neighbors to pray for the victims and their families as well as the root causes that lead people to prey upon others, and those who seek to do us harm. Reach out to our Muslim neighbors to stand with and support them in a climate of fear and suspicion. Proclaim a clear message of love and support to our LGBTQ community and that they are welcome in this church. Work to prevent and end gun violence in this country. As I reflect on the life and ministry of our congregation I have no doubt we will engage in ministry that addressesthe first three actions Bishop Bartholomew encourages us to participate in. But is that as far as we are willing to go?Prayer is essential. Reaching out in support to our neighbors of the Abrahamic faith who suffer from prejudice isimportant. Proclaiming love and welcoming those who are ostracized by portions of society follows the example ourLord Jesus provided. But what do we do to prevent and end gun violence in this country? How do we live out thatlast line of the promises made in Baptism and the Affirmation of Baptism rites that ask, “Will you strive for justiceand peace in all the earth?” to which we respond, “I will and I ask God to help and guide me.”Maybe now is the time to put actions to our words. Maybe now is the time to begin thinking about how each of uscan “be a part of the change we want to see in the world” by first asking the question, “What can I do?” When askedto offer a prayer at the kickoff of a fundraising appeal that their church would raise enough funds for the ministryproject Evangelist Dr. Tony Campolo replied, “No. I won’t pray that the appeal is a success. Now is not the time forprayer. What I will do is pull out my checkbook and write a check because now is the time to give and give gener-ously and I invite you all to do the same with your checkbooks and pocketbooks and wallets as well.” So along withprayer, what can we do?Rev. Sara Lilja, Director of the Lutheran/Episcopal Advocacy Ministry of New Jersey who preached and led wor-ship on June 19 at Our Savior will surely have some suggestions to any who are serious about answering that ques-tion on a personal and congregational level. It might include writing our elected officials at the state or national level. It may involve calling them. It may involve finding out facts from actual data studies rather than sound bites fromtelevision’s “talking heads” or radio sensationalists. It may even include participating in marches or vigils or someother activity that requires our being a physical witness to prevent and end gun violence.Luther wrote in the Small Catechism, “When we pray ‘Your will be done’ we believe that God’s good and graciouswill comes about without our prayer, but we ask in this prayer that it may also come about, in and among us.” Idon’t know about you, but I think it’s time I got out of the stands filled with spectators and got on the field. Isn’tthat what Luther was talking about? Isn’t that what it means to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? If, so thenlet us journey together. And may the peace of Christ which passes all understanding be with us as we take up ourcross to follow our Savior and Lord. SUNDAY MORNING BULLETIN PRAYER LIST We will be changing the way we post our Prayer List in the bulletin starting with the Sep- tember 4 bulletin. We will be removing all of the names currently in the bulletin and if you would like to add someone to the list, please use your communication card; check the box “public”, share the reason you are placing them on the list, if you want that post- ed, and place in the offering plate. You may keep their illness or problems private if you choose. It is pleasing to be able to lift someone up in prayer with a specific concern. We will also be listing who is requesting the prayers so that we can keep up to date on them. July/August 2016, Messenger page 2

WHAT'S YOUR STORY Over the next several months, the Congregational Resources Committee will be asking members to share their stories regard- ing their journey in finding their way to The Evangelical Luther- an Church of Our Savior. We will compile these to prepare a booklet to be distributed in the autumn as a \"kick-off\" of the dual 2017 anniversary celebrations of LCOS’s 90th and the Reformation's 500th. For example, here is Janice Bellenghi’s story: After my father's massive stroke, I moved from NYC to Mt. Laurel to be close to my mother for assistance. I be- came a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Marlton. When my mother-in-law and father-in-law passed, we moved into my husband's boyhood home in Bellmawr. I was in the middle of a two-year term as the Evangelism chair on Church Council. I remained a member until my term was up. With unpredictable weather, distance and heavy traffic concerns, I decided it was time to find a new church closer to home. After a computer search, I found The Lutheran Church of Our Savior. On my first visit I was \"hooked.\" The warm, friendly recep- tion from members and the wonderful sermon Pastor Zschech delivered reinforced my desire to become a mem- ber of this Christian community.Write your story and place it in the “What’s Your Story” basket in the narthex; or mail it to the church to SandyDeDonatis, 204 Wayne Ave., Haddonfield, NJ 08033; or email it to Laura Oakes at [email protected] byOctober 2, 2016. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screen- ings, will offer their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings at Lutheran Church of Our Savior on 7/1/2016. Five screenings will be offered that scan for po- tential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke;abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strongpredictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone densi-ty screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which in-cludes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screeningstake 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any packagepriced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners. Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council (IHOC) Hosting Opportunity at LCOS: Coordinator Needed! “For I was homeless and you gave me shelter and a chance to become independent.” No, Jesus didn’t say this, but it is in the same theme when our Lord and Savior said to his disci-ples, “Surely when you did this to the least of these you did it also to me.” In this spirit of reaching out and helpingthe homeless of Camden County there is an opportunity for Our Savior to be a host church for 2 weeks in Feb-Marof 2017 for the IHOC of Camden County program that provides 12 homeless men the opportunity to get off theirstreet and firmly planted on their feet. Here’s how it works. Twelve men enter the program that begins the first week of November and ends by the secondweek of May. The men stay in churches for two weeks, leaving by 7:00 am every weekday morning and returning nosooner than 3:30 pm. They are in the church over the weekend unless they are at the laundromat or an activity led bythe congregation. For the first 10 weeks the men are in life counseling and preparing for looking for and securing ajob. The goal is for the men to have a job that supports rent and regular living expenses after the program ends. What Does a Host Church Do? We provide a place for the men to sleep and eat each night and day, as well as foodsupplies for breakfast and lunch, and prepare a hot dinner for the men each night. An overnight male host is requiredeach evening from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am. Hosts will also be needed for Saturday morning and afternoon as well as onSundays. We also would provide them a shower that we can convert one of the floor sinks in our janitor closets intowithout much difficulty. Before we can go forward we need a member to serve as the coordinator for this ministry that lasts 2 weeks andwould require getting volunteers for meals and overnight and weekend hosting. The coordinators from First Presby-terian (Ed Hess) and Grace Episcopal would be more than available to assist in leading the new coordinator at LCOSin the process. Interested? Please contact Pastor Wayne Zschech or Social Ministry Chair, Betsy Kuehn if you want toknow more details. Prayerfully consider how you might be a part of this new ministry in our 90th Anniversary Year ofministry to the needy of our community.
