MeThsesPaerisnh ger SEPTEMBER 2016 NEWSLETTER THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF OUR SAVIOR HADDONFIELD, NJ UNITY SUNDAY WORSHIP SEP 11 AT 9:30; RALLY DAY PICNIC TO FOLLOW Mark your calendars now for ONE WORSHIP SERVICE at 9:30 on Sunday, Septem- ber 11! Unity Sunday worship is our congregation’s opportunity for those who worship at one of the three regular Sunday times to worship together as one congregation. It’s also Rally Sunday when children from Pre-K to Grade 6 register, beginning at 8:45, and begin attending Faith Formation classes (aka Sunday school) with a Rally Day Picnic to follow at around 10:45. Bring your favorite dessert or side dish to the picnic as the church will be providing the hamburgers and hot dogs. Volunteers are needed to set up tables at 8:45 and clean-up at 12:00. Please let the church office know if you will be able to help. CONFIRMATION MINISTRY BEGINS WITH ORIENTATION SEPT. 11 AT 6:30 Another year of confirmation ministry with catechetical instruction is about to begin. The class of 20-25 seventh and eighth grade youth, along with parents, will cover the Apostle’sCreed, Sacraments, and Worship at biweekly Learn Events, and Our Lutheran Heritage at thefall Lock-In Retreat. They will also receive acolyte training as a part of the retreat. This programutilizes the Head to the Heart Power Point themes produced by Faith Inkubators. The ministry begins on Sunday, September 11, at 6:30 with a “Back To ConfirmationNight” orientation for both youth and parents in the Church Sanctuary where the goals and vol-unteer opportunities of the program will be reviewed. Youth choosing to sing in the Youth Choir will not be respon-sible for serving as acolytes or as a nursery aide unless they choose to do so, given the time commitment required forthe choir. The confirmation youth and their parents will participate in a Blessing Litany during worship on Septem-ber 25. One significant shift in this ministry is that at least one parent, grandparent, or adult who has a stake in theirchild’s faith is asked to attend every confirmation Learn Event with their child. While this may be a lot to ask of fam-ilies with extremely full schedules, Pastor Wayne strongly believes the most important way to teach faith to our chil-dren is to first teach and empower loving adults to model and share the faith with them. In addition, parents have theopportunity to explore what they once learned in confirmation from the perspective and life experience of an adultand how that impacts their own faith in daily life.CONFIRMATION LOCK-IN FOCUSES ON LUTHERAN HERITAGE AND COMMUNITY BUILDINGOn Friday and Saturday, September 16-17, the Confirmation Youth will gather at the church for a lock-in retreat fol-lowed by a community building experience at Ironwood Outdoor Center. The Lock-In portion of the retreat beginsFriday, Sep 16 at 6:00 and will include a focus on how the Lutheran Church came to be as well as training on how tobe an acolyte. On Saturday, the group will travel to Ironwood Outdoor Center for a 9:00-Noon High Ropes Course session to en-hance becoming more tightly knit as a community in the body of Christ. The cost of the event is $30/participant to cover the cost of Ironwood fees. Parents will be chaperoning the eventboth at the church and at Ironwood. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Savior is a faith community that worships Jesus as our Lord, proclaims and shares God's Word, welcomes all people, serves human needs, and nurtures personal and spiritual growth through fellowship all to the glory of God.

LCOS MEMORIAL GARDEN IS HERE!\"A Memorial Garden provides a beautiful, meaningful placewhere members and their families can be interred at theirchurch home. It provides a place of repose and remembrancein a lovely sacred garden where one can peacefully meditateupon the lives of those who have died\". Those were my wordson All Saints Day in November 2015 when I introduced thisproject sponsored by the Memorial Gifts Board in celebrationof its 25th year anniversary. Now, nine months later, that gar-den has been completed and speaking for myself and manymany others it exceeds all expectations. As I stood in the gar-den over the past couple of weeks I heard \"beautiful\", \"serene\",\"peaceful\", tranquil\", \"total transformation\" and many othersincere comments from our members and several passers-by. We are blessed to have such a beautiful meaningfulspace. Thanks to Laura Oakes, Don Miano, Pastor Wayne,Sandy DeDonatis, and Pam Powers and Gene Kane (bothfrom Kane Murphy Funeral Home) for their work on this project. Kudos to Al Masullo of Knolltop Nursery for his visionand implementation of the garden and Scott MacMillan of Turf Irrigation for our irrigation solutions and lighting effects. While Al and Scott were our contractors, they realized the meaning of this project to our church and worked in close part-nership with the LCOS team to be sure our spiritual objectives were met.
