“A Few Reflections on My Trip to Haiti” By Pastor Wayne Zschech It is now a week since I returned from the week-long mission trip I participated in with 14 members of The First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield, serving as their devotions and spiritual leader for the trip. Our purpose in going on this mission trip, made possible through the Healing Haiti mission organization, was to witness first-hand the impact Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) meals have on the impov-erished and starving children of Third World or developing countries and then to share our experience back homeso others might be inspired to donate their time and treasure in the FMSC Mobile Pack scheduled for April of 2016.One of the group, Linda Hess, came up with three H’s to best describe her experience and I think they are quite ac-curate for my experience as well.Hard: Physically, Haiti is a hard place in which to live. Everywhere you look there are high cement block wallstopped with razor-wire or broken bottles cemented in to prevent intruders. Grass is almost non-existent. Seventypercent of Haitians are unemployed, so being able to purchase what you need to survive is a struggle every day. As Ilooked into the hardened faces of many of the young boys and girls, as well as the men and women, it was clear lifehad hardened them too.Humbling: In the streets of Cite Soleil, the worst slum in the world, I was greeted by some of the most desperatepeople I’ve ever encountered. Children are naked or half naked running through the streets and alleyways that arelittered with trash as well as human and animal waste as there is no sewer system, and toilets are mostly in buildingslike schools. The only water they have available is the water brought in and dispensed by water trucks through Heal-ing Haiti’s ministry. Without HH the people of Cite Soleil would have no water and when we arrived the line formedimmediately with people carrying 5 gallon buckets, basins and whatever would hold water. The truck usually ran outof water before the people ran out of empty buckets. While all children start school in kindergarten only 50% makeit to high school and only 15% of them ever graduate. Many children are orphaned from the January 2010 earth-quake but many are orphaned simply because their parents cannot afford to keep them, so Haiti has thousands oforphanages. On our last day, we witnessed the director of a local home orphanage presenting a month-old newbornto an American woman who runs a women’s shelter nearby as she could not care for it any longer. The infant hadbeen born two months premature and abandoned on a trash pile with the umbilical cord and placenta still attached, enabling it to live long enough to be found and brought to the orphanage. The woman accepted the infant and in-tends to adopt her if possible. She named her Joy.Hope: In the midst of the most depressing places I’ve ever been, (Camden has nothing on Cite Soleil), I also wit-nessed incredible signs and stories of hope. On a 25 foot deep garbage dump in Cite Soleil, Healing Haiti is buildinga church and school to proclaim a message of hope 4-5 days a week (that’s how often Haitians worship) in the mostdesperate place on earth and the opportunity for education to those who previously struggled to receive it. The nameof the church is Hope. A soccer initiative in the same slum provides children with structure and discipline that is ap-plicable in other aspects of life 5 days a week as well as a hot FMSC meal when they attend. That one meal a daymeans the difference between scoring 50% on national tests and 75%. Grace Village, run and operated by HealingHaiti, offers an orphanage for 40 children, a school, a medical clinic, a church, a bakery, and transition housing forteens who no longer are eligible to live in the orphanage but not ready to live independently. It is a beacon on the hillin the village where it is located. It also provides FMSC meal packs for at least four other orphanages in the commu-nity and to those living in tents near the mass grave where 300,000 Haitians are buried following the earthquake.Scripture tells us hope is what we have for things not yet seen but are confident God will provide. Through the min-istry and work of organizations like Feed My Starving Children and Healing Haiti, as well as Mission of Hope andLove a Child, who serve as distribution centers for FMSC meals, I too have hope that Haiti will know the restorativelife our risen Lord offers in the resurrection. Thank you for praying for me during my week in Haiti and I hope byour work together, God’s way of life (the kingdom life) might come to and through us to Haiti and the world we livein.Confirmation Youth Game Night on Nov 29 at 6:30Whether it’s Wii Bowling, Pictionary, or Twister, confirmation youth and their friends will have a great time on theSunday night after Thanksgiving playing games and having fun getting to know one another better at this Play Eventfrom 6:30-8:00. Council Approves Creation of Director of Youth and Family Ministry (DYFM) PositionAt its regular October meeting the Congregation Council voted to create a new paid staff position to focus on youth andfamily ministry. LCOS is blessed to be a congregation rooted in a neighborhood that is growing in families with school agechildren. To grow our ministry to, with, and for youth and families, the Council believes hiring a part-time director whosefocus on the youth and families of LCOS and surrounding community is the next logical step in heeding God’s call to“make disciples.”This Director of Youth and Family Ministry (DYFM) would work 20 hours each week and be responsible for:Overseeing the Faith Stepping Stones ministry that blesses the child, gifts the family and calls parents to their child’s baptismal promises,Oversee the Senior High Youth ministry, andDevelop a Young Adult ministry over the next few years.Responsibilities would also include recruiting volunteers, planning events and opportunities for service, and supporting ac-tivities for youth and families. The estimated annual compensation for this new position is $26,000, but would be half thatamount in 2016 as a tentative start date would be no earlier than July 1.How can funding for this new staff position be made possible? The Congregation Resources Ministry Team is en-couraging members who have contributed to the Refresh Capital Appeal from their regular income to increase their regularGeneral Fund envelope offering by the same or portion of that Refresh amount. Others might consider increasing their reg-ular envelope offering by 0.5% of their income. For more information about the Director of Youth and Family Ministry position, meet with Pastor Zschech andmembers of the Congregational Resources Committee on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. in the ParishHall. 11 to Receive First Bibles Bible Study on 2 Corinthians Begins on Reformation Sunday Nov 16/18-Dec 21/23; Drop-Ins Welcome!
