MeThsesPaerisnh ger JUNE 2017 NEWSLETTER THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF OUR SAVIOR HADDONFIELD, NJ 14 TO AFFIRM BAPTISM AT CONFIRMATION, JUNE 4 AT 10:30 WORSHIP After two years of catechetical faith formation, fourteen youth from the congre- gation will affirm their baptismal faith in the rite of confirmation. After a brief reception in the narthex at 9:30 and a class photo in the sanctuary, the youth will process into worship with the other worship leaders. They will profess their faith using the words of the Apostles’ Creed. They will affirm their ongoing participa- tion in the work and life of the Church with the help and guidance of God. Moreover, we will offer our affirmation of the same to them as well as to God. As our Confirmands prepare for their big day on June 4 they have participated in a Pocono retreat two days in May, reviewing the promises they will make dur- ing the rite. Pastor Wayne asks you to keep these youth in your prayers. God bless Daniel Cook, Ava Cottone, Sophia Howard, Hailey Melcher, Sebas- tian Miller, Kate Morris, Luke Riley, Isabel Sandone, Logan Sehdev, Ava Spence, Emma Warren, and Grayson Wright as they approach this momen- tous step in their lifelong journey of faith.Communion will be by intinction, due to the size of the Confirmation class so that we can try to end theworship as close to 11:30 as possible.HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR BLESSING JUNE 18 AT 10:30 WORSHIPOnce again The Lutheran Church of Our Savior will be blessing our graduat-ing high school seniors and acknowledging their parents at the 10:30 worshipon June 18. During this deeply meaningful and emotional service parents arethanked and acknowledged for keeping the promises they made at theirchild’s baptism being raised in the Christian faith. Graduating seniors affirmthe promises they made at their confirmation and together parents and childcome forward for the blessing ceremony. The young men and women arepresented with an afghan that has the Serenity Prayer on it as a gift from thecongregation made possible through gifts to the Memorial Gift and Endow-ment Funds, before receiving a blessing from their parents and then offeringone in return. Please keep the following graduating seniors who will be in at-tendance, and their parents, in your prayers as they step out into the world asyoung adult Christians. “GRADUATION AND CONFIRMATION; MILESTONES ON THE JOURNEY OF LIFE AND FAITH” By Pastor Wayne Zschech On the three-hour drive back from Washington D.C. following our daughter, Brie’s, college gradua- tion from The Catholic University of America, I had a lot of time to reflect on the weekend’s com- mencement events. Honor’s Convocation, Baccalaureate, Commencement and Diploma Ceremonywere all designed to celebrate the culmination of the graduating seniors’ hard work over the last four years. It’s going tobe a long time until the smiles will be able to fade from Kate and my faces over the joy we experienced and shared withnot only our daughter, but so many of her close friends and roommates since 2013 when she first walked on campus.Yet, while graduation is certainly a time for celebration it is not the culmination of one’s life efforts. It is rather a launch-ing pad for using the knowledge and reason honed in college to be used in a career that benefits the community in whichwe live. Rather than a finish line it is more like a mile marker along the journey of our lives. We would never imaginesaying after receiving our diploma, be it college or high school, and saying, “Well, I’ve got my degree. Now I can sit backand do nothing.” No! Instead we integrate what we’ve learned with our own God-given passions to be involved in mak-ing our communities a better place to live and, in doing so, enable us to live a meaningful and purposeful life as well.In the same way one’s Confirmation, or Affirmation of Baptism, is a launching pad for using the knowledge and reasonhoned in study of the Bible and Small Catechism to better enable one to live out the promises made during the rite; tolive among God’s faithful people, hear God’s word and share in his supper, proclaim the gospel (good news) of JesusChrist in word and deed, serve the needs of others following the example of Jesus, and strive for justice and peace in allthe world. Confirmation is not the finish line of one’s faith formation and enrichment. It is a major mile marker alongone’s journey of faith that launches you into a life of ambassadorship of God’s Kingdom (God’s way of life) in the worldin which you live, work, and play. And anyone who thinks they’ve learned all they need to know and understand when itcomes to integrating one’s understanding of faith with that world by the age of 14 is very naïve! It is a life-long processof revelation and discovery, and I pray all those who affirm their Baptism recognize this truth throughout their lives. How do you view your confirmation? Was it the end of your faith formation, or a milestone in a life-long journey of dis-covery and integration of faith and life? How are you doing with keeping the promises you made in your Affirmation ofBaptism, be it at Confirmation or when you formally joined the congregation as an active voting member? Is there anarea you need guidance or encouragement? These are the questions I hope you continue to struggle to discern through-out your life and I hope you might consider how I might assist you in answering them if possible. Until then I pray youhave many blessings in this month of graduation and confirmation celebrations and the joy that comes with them andanticipation of what lies ahead in our young people’s lives. BIBLE DISCUSSION ON BOOK OF “ISAIAH” CONTINUES THROUGH MID-JUNE Join Pastor Wayne and other intrigued Christians on either Monday nights from 7:30- 9:00 OR Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:00 for our continued study and discus- sion of the prophet Isaiah and what he shared with God’s people before, during, and near the end of the Israelites captivity and how it still speaks to us today. Prior partici- pation in the discussion is not required and each session is designed to be inde- pendently educational and beneficial in one’s walk of faith. So even if you haven’t beenthere from the beginning, join us as we continue the discussion of Isaiah as it continues into the third week of June.Want to make the discussions more interesting? The month of May was one of the more stressful ones but also one of the most suc- cessful and that stems from the Mother’s Day Youth Service and Pancake Breakfast. We had a total of seven different youth and three parents help out with the breakfast; ushering, acolyting, reading and acting in the skit. It was a great Sunday that was able to show off our growing youth program. We also hosted a spectacular Spaghetti Dinner that was well attended by members and non-members of our church as we raised mon- ey for our youth mission trip to North Carolina. As we look ahead we will see that June is pretty light on youth event stuff as we wrapped up youth group for the summer in May. Despite the lack of youth group this summer will still have plenty of options for youth of all ages running through August. We will start col-lecting items the week of May 28, so please contact Jack about dropping off items for the yard sale. The actual salewill start on Saturday June 3rd at 8:00am at the church. Swing by to pick up some lost treasures and donate to agreat cause! Delanco Camp is a camp that I myself have been involved with for several years with working on staff, attending retreats and spending many hours eating their fantastic food. It is located in Tabernacle, NJ and is a Christian camp that offers week long retreats for different ages each week over the summer. I person- ally will be at the Jr High I camp and Teen Camp as a counselor and teacher. These are great opportunities to get away from the business of life and enjoy a week at camp with friends (and great for parents to have a quiet house for a week!). More information about camps and registration is at Delanco.org along with prices. If prices are an issue please contact Jack at [email protected] as scholarships and dis- counts are available. There is already a $50 discount for first time campers!Lastly, I want to point out a new addition to our VBS week this summer, Youth Week! This week will be jampacked with opportunities for youth to serve and hangout. All youth will be encouraged to volunteer at VBS inthe morning, join us for our after-noon activities such as bowling, golf, and skating, and finish off the night with anight event at the church with games, worship and a message. Registration will be up shortly for both VBS andYouth Week! VBS will run from 9:00 AM to Noon, the afternoon activities will be 1:00pm to 3:00pm and YouthWeek night activity will be from 7:00PM to 9:00PM.
