country news april 2019 Parish Magazine of Shillingford St George and Dunchideock “I’m sorry, the resurrection of Jesus was a miracle, not a service of this cemetery.” Easter Sunday is 21st April. Don’t forget to check the Diary to see what is on!

From the Rectory, Christow Hello! I am Ruth and, like my Biblical namesake, I have been called by God’s love to leave the place where we have lived for the last thirty-five years to settle here among you in the Teign Valley and Haldon Hill Mission Community. “Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Giles and I would like to thank all of you who have made us feel so welcome. We are strangers but not altogether in a strange land! We come from the South Hams, a place of hills and valleys, of villages and farms - much like here: the same but different. We are looking forward to putting down roots in this community and witnessing to the love of God in these villages. From my perspective as I write this at the end of February, I suspect that we may all be feeling slightly lost in an alien landscape as the Brexit negotiations draw to a close - or not, as the case may be! How will our lives be affected? The same, but different? We seem to have spent two and a half years in a wilderness of apparently fruitless talks. As a nation we have wrestled with our inner demons: fear of difference that can lead to racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, gender hatred, to name but a few. Two and a half years of trying to come to terms with what “community” really means. Two and a half years of Lenten struggle. Jesus spent forty days and nights coming to terms with the reality of his calling, his mission. His decision was to trust absolutely in the love of the Father. There was no guarantee of happiness, of success, of material wealth; on the contrary he lived among us for only three more years, teaching and healing, forgiving and welcoming the marginalised back into community. Jesus witnessed to God’s love for everyone, a message that led him to the pain and suffering of Holy Week and the darkness of Good Friday. Many people consequently reject Jesus as a waste of time. They cannot see further than the cross and so they miss the truth: “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24). Death is not the last word. We have the accounts of eyewitnesses that on the third day Jesus rose from the tomb - eyewitnesses who saw him, spoke with him and shared meals with him. Their stories will be a central feature of our Easter celebrations. But first we must accompany Jesus into the darkness, just as he accompanies us in our struggle through life, strangers to each other until we refocus into community. Let us gather together in the worship of Holy Week; let us turn our eyes outward to see the love of God active in our local community, the love that endures steadfast through the darkness to shine with resurrection life. Let us renew our trust in God that we too will emerge from the darkness to proclaim with joy “Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!” Rev Ruth Frampton

Summer Sketching at Shillingford Village Hall I hope the recent warm weather has inspired artists to blow the dust off their sketching gear ready to get out and about in our lovely countryside this spring. With this in mind, the Shillingford Village Hall art class will be concentrating on developing sketching and painting skills for outdoor work this term. Term starts on Friday May 3rd at 9.45am. All abilities catered for. £48 (or £45 for over-60s) for the term. Shillingford Film Night Tuesday April 2nd at 7.30pm in the Village Hall ‘Hidden Figures’ And a ‘Popeye the Sailor’ short film. £3.50 with complimentary tea/coffee on arrival There is an intermission for ice cream Hidden Figures is an entertaining, hopeful movie about race relations and the space race. This film has a  rating of 8/10 Synopsis: A true story of how a group of African-American female mathematicians served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. We follow these women as they quickly rise through the ranks of NASA dealing with the racial prejudice of the time. Their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes. And the last film of the season: April 30th ‘Bridges of Madison County’ A 9  movie, staring and directed by Clint Eastwood. Also staring Meryl Streep who plays an Italian woman, married to a farmer in Iowa who meets and falls in love with a photographer. The film is a romantic drama – unusual for Clint Eastwood! Can YOU Help? Dunchideock Village Hall Commiee is looking for a new Secretary to help them with administraon, minute-taking and record keeping – we need to ll this post at our AGM in May. Shillingford Local History Society A big thank you to all who came to the talk on ‘Shillingford in the 19th Century’ given by the Society’s Chair Jan Wood. What an interesting and informative talk about the people and the topography at the time. She talked about the gentry and the village folk and we were amazed to discover that Shillingford Abbot was actually bigger than Shillingford St George back then. Jan had a wealth of information not only to display on the screen and talk about but also in the physical maps and pictures she displayed as well. However, she only managed to get to the middle of the century so will be back at some stage in the future for Part II to bring us up to 1900. We look forward to seeing you all again at our Annual General Meeting on 8 May when Dr David Parker will be giving us a talk entitled ‘Early Victorian Devon: an age of opulence and optimism’. Annual subscriptions of £8 will be payable at that time. If anyone out there would like to join the committee they would be most welcome. Also if you wish us to keep in touch with you then let us have your email. Going forward to our autumn meeting on 23 October, have you an interesting short story from World War II? If so perhaps you would like to come and give a short talk, say 10 minutes long, to that meeting. In particular we are looking for World War II stories of local families and events to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II this coming September, but any memories or stories of your family members or friends will be welcomed. It may be you have an interesting item of memorabilia from that time which you would like to bring, to show us and tell us about? If you do have an interesting item, but don’t want to talk about it, bring it to show it to us, anyway! Do come and make this an interesting evening. Diana Trout [email protected]
