Parish Magazine of Shillingford St George and Dunchideock June brings tulips, lilies, roses, Fills the children's hand with posies. Disclaimer this month: Flowers were picked in accordance with countryside / health rules! June’s Diary: Still not a lot! There is stuff to do while semi-isolating/ socially distancing though - see inside.
From the Rectory, Christow. Letter from Ruth “Flaming June” – usually a month of sunshine and strawberries; Wimbledon and examinations! This year will undoubtedly be different! In the Church’s calendar we resume “ordinary time”: our hangings and vestments in church are green; we are able to pause and take a deep breath after the roller- coaster of the last few months. Think about it: we have celebrated God becoming a human being to live with us; we have watched scenes from Jesus’s amazingly brief public ministry; we have mourned his death on the cross, murdered by people who did not understand and rejected his message of love; and then we rejoiced at his resurrection from the dead – a sign to us that God’s steadfast love endures forever, holding us even into eternity. And then, on the very last day of May, we celebrated Pentecost, the gift of God’s Holy Spirit into our world to inspire us with hope and energise us into lives of self-giving love. Is that it then? Does the Church come to a full stop? By no means. The church buildings are still closed, but “church” (and that’s us, folks!) – we continue to worship God and carry God’s love into our communities. Please see below the contact details for our telephone services and Zoom activities. On 7th June we have a major day of celebration: Trinity Sunday. We worship God as Father, Son and Spirit, a concept that has occupied theologians for centuries. Our exploration of the nature of God will sustain us throughout the summer. Perhaps we can more easily recognise God in our lives as Creator, Companion and Comforter. So here’s a challenge: at the end of each day ask yourself the question ’How have I met God today?’ – In the beauty around me? In a listening ear? In a smile or a wave? In a voice at the end of a phone? Let’s use the summer sunshine to clear our vision and attune our hearing to God’s presence. Teign Valley and Haldon Hill Mission Community The Teign Valley and Haldon Hill Mission Community includes the parishes of Ashton, Bridford, Christow, Doddiscombsleigh, Dunchideock and Dunsford. Rev’d Ruth Frampton (Priest-in-Charge) can be contacted on 01647 253164 or [email protected]. Her day off is Thursday. Pastoral Care If you would like, or know someone who would be glad of, a call or “virtual” visit from Rev’d Ruth Frampton, or another member of the church community, please contact the rectory (contact details above), or the Churches’ Administrator (see Getting in touch… below). Coronavirus In the light of the Government guidance, the Church of England has said that all churches are to close to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. We are, however, holding regular services by telephone – at 10am, each Sunday morning, and a service of evening prayer at 6pm each Wednesday evening. You do not need internet access, but simply a landline or
mobile telephone. Between 5 and 10 minutes before the service begins, please dial 0333 011 0616 and enter the code 334 7721 when asked. You will also be asked to give your name. The cost of the call is the standard cost for any 01, 02 or 03 number, but will vary according to your telephone contract. It may well be covered by your “inclusive” minutes, or by free evening or weekend calls, but you are advised to check. If you are anxious about the current situation, or would like prayer or pastoral support (e.g. because of illness or bereavement), please do not hesitate to contact Rev’d Ruth Frampton or the Churches’ Administrator (Steve Cook) – contact details above and below. There is a separate notice elsewhere in the magazine giving details of how the churches are working together with local parish councils and others to co-ordinate shopping, collect medication etc for those who need to “self-isolate” or who can’t leave their homes. Teign Valley Larder Please see the separate information in the magazine about the new Teign Valley Larder in the porch of Christow church - where people can donate food, and those in need of food can pick some things up for free. Anyone can use it – it’s for the whole Teign Valley area, not just for Christow! We’d like to help reduce food waste, and we especially hope it will help people who are struggling at the moment. This initiative is supported by Dartmoor National Park Authority. Getting in touch… In the current situation, no baptisms, weddings or other services are taking place in church, but If you wish to discuss plans for a postponed or future baptism/christening, banns of marriage, wedding, interment of ashes or memorial service, or have any other enquiry, please contact Steve Cook, the Churches’ Administrator, on 01392 832332 or email [email protected] Coronavirus – help for those “self-isolating” who need shopping and/or medications collected The situation with Coronavirus continues to change, so these arrangements may well have to be reviewed. Thank You! Many thanks to all who have donated buttons to the Making of 'Dooberries' that Mum & I have been doing. We have sent over 90 so far (with more than 30 still to go!), and we are extremely grateful to all of you. We received a thank you card today as follows: 'Thank you! From all the Staff in the Emergency Department, Royal Bournemouth Hospital!' Some of the comments inside: 'Thank you so much. My ears thank you! C. ' 'Thank you so much for my dooberry,it really is an ear saver. Love S.' 'Thank you, love my purple dooberry! S. ' 'Thank you for taking your time to make these amazing little gadgets! My ears thank you LOTS!! R.' Given that we could not have made as many without your donations of buttons, these comments are also for you! From Mum & I (& Rosie as well!), thank you again. Judith www.dunchideock.org.uk A link to Country News Online can also be found here! From Dunchideock Village Hall… Dear all, I, on behalf of the Village Hall Committee, hope you are all doing as well as possible under the current restrictions and you are well and staying safe. I am missing everyone a lot, as I’m sure you are missing your village friends as well. It’s been nice to see some of you occasionally as I’ve walked the dog and to catch up, or just keep in touch (across the road/ fences and correctly socially distanced!) as far as possible. We as a Committee, and I myself personally, understand the problems everyone is going through at the moment, and I’d like to take this chance to let you know that we have not stopped looking after the Village Hall just because you, the Village, cannot use it as you used to. We are looking into ways to adapt our social events so that we can get Villagers back involved. If you’d like a chat & catch up, or just to talk to someone outside of your 4walls(!) you can contact me on 01392 832015. All my best with virtual Hugs all round, Karen Robson P.S. If you’d like to donate to the continuing running costs of Dunchideock Village Hall (which sadly never stop!), you can send donations to me, or contact me for further details of how to pay direct into the Village Hall bank account.
Shillingford St George Parish Council NEWSLETTER May 2020 PARISH COUNCIL ONLINE MEETING Shillingford Parish Council held its first online meeting on Monday 4th May 2020 at 3:30pm. The Councillors and the Clerk held a practice meeting the week before, as this was new territory for everyone! All Parish Councillors managed to get online to attend the meeting and we welcomed five members of the public along as well. It was considered a great success. FLOWERS Manstree Vineyard run by the Boyces brothers have made a very generous donation of flowers to beautify the village signs. They will provide 6 x 18” planters to put by the side of the village signs, two pots at the Shillingford St George sign by South View Farm, two pots by the Shillingford Abbot sign near Pengellys Farm track and one each by the two village signs in the dip by Barton Cottage. In the summer they propose to use a mix of taller cottage garden style plants which will be bright but harmonise with the countryside surroundings; in the winter they will use a mix of wallflowers, violas, primulas and spring flowering bulbs. The brothers will water the pots every day and all free of charge, just to show their appreciation of living in such a beautiful part of Devon. VILLAGE GREEN The Parish Council are aware that residents have been asking if the grass on the village green could be cut. As the Parish Council are not responsible for the village green and the trustees refuse to allow us to cut the grass, we are not in a position to cut it. PLANNING The Parish Council had received a planning application for an agricultural building and hardstanding at land off Shillingford Lane. After hearing from the applicant, the Parish Council decided to support the proposal. CORONAVIRUS If you need to self-isolate due to Coronavirus and require help with shopping etc, we have volunteers willing to help you. Alternatively, if you would like to volunteer, please contact the Clerk leaving your details. Thank you to all those that have already volunteered. NEXT MEETING The next Parish Council meeting will be held on Monday 8th June 2020 at 3:30pm. The meeting will be held online via Zoom and the public are welcome to attend. Please contact the Clerk or the Chairman if you wish to attend the meeting.
St George’s Church We are hoping that churches will reopen in July, but for Shillingford, there will also be a significant change – after over 28 years and 4 Rectors, Wendy will be moving from her usual churchwarden’s seat and sit in a different pew. Wendy has been the ever-present face at the church door, welcoming people in to regular Sunday worship, baptisms, weddings and funerals. She has an encyclopaedic memory of family relationships and putting names to faces that would embarrass many of us. How she does this is a mystery. In the last 28 years the church building itself has altered with repairs to the tower and roof, changes inside the church to fit it for use in the 21st century, and for use not only as a place of worship. The addition of running water, a toilet and small kitchen means we can now have more comfortable meetings and concerts in this ancient building. All this has been done with a sympathetic eye on the past so the unique feel of our village church and its style of worship has not been compromised. Many will know Wendy as someone who never appears flustered or hurried - just always in control and on time. A lady who is utterly dependable and generous with her time; organising fund-raising events, cleaning and providing altar flowers “to the glory of God, not just to look pretty”. The church will need to adjust to cover the effort and support that Wendy has given over so many years; not least when each week she arrived with her basket full of the tea and coffee making requirements! This does not mean we are being abandoned by Wendy, I’m sure she will remain a source of knowledge and help for those of us who continue the Christian tradition in St George’s church. Wendy, please, do not be embarrassed by this expression of thanks and praise for all you have done for us over all these years. It is time to enjoy the fruits of your labours; do so with a clear conscience! NM Ode to a Churchwarden Wendy Nelmes is stepping down, relinquishing her queenly crown, Its time she took a well-earned rest, For all those years she gave her best, Harvest home and all those suppers, Bazaars and fetes and all those cuppas, She's always there to take her part, Her goodness comes right from the heart, She will be missed for all she's done, but now it’s time she had some fun, Thank you, Wendy, from all of us, We know you didn't want a fuss, You are still here as we can see, Just tell us - Who will make the tea? Sunday 7 June Trinity Sunday 2 Corinthians 13.11–13 Matthew 28.16–20 Praying for: Surrounding parishes of Dunchideock, Kenn & Exminster Sunday 14 June 1st after Trinity Romans 5.1–8 Matthew 9.35 – 10.8 [9–23] Praying for: Barrack Lane & Barton Lane Sunday 21 June 2nd after Trinity Romans 6.1b–11 Matthew 10.24–39 Praying for: Oak Close & Waybrook Lane Sunday 28 June 3rd after Trinity Romans 6.12–23 Matthew 10.40–42 Praying for: Road through Shillingford Abbot Sunday 5 July 4th after Trinity Romans 7.15–25a Matthew 11.16–19,25–30 Praying for: Ash Court & St George’s Terrace PLANTERS FOR THE VILLAGE SIGNS I am delighted to report that Tim and Simon Boyce have offered to place planters by all four village signs. In the summer they propose to use a mix of taller cottage garden style plants which will be bright but harmonise with the countryside surroundings and in the winter they will use a mix of Wallflowers, violas, primulas and spring flowering bulbs. What is more, they have promised to keep them watered. The Boyces deserve a huge vote of thanks from all of us. I would also like to thank Tam Mucklow for her role in organising this for us. And while we are on the subject of the beauty of our villages, may I ask those of us who walk around the area, to consider taking with them the necessary equipment for picking up litter. A glove, if you don’t have a litter-picker and a plastic bag in a rucksack is all that is required. The litter detracts from what the generosity shown by Tim and Simon is doing positively for us. It is unbelievable how much is dumped in the hedges, probably by people in cars and there isn’t much we can do to stop them. We can, however, clear up after them. Peter Barwell Chair of Shillingford Parish Council
