TEIGN VALLEY AND HALDON HILL MISSION COMMUNITY The Teign Valley and Haldon Hill Mission Community includes the parishes of Ashton, Bridford, Christow, Doddiscombsleigh, Dunchideock and Dunsford. Rev’d Ruth Frampton (Priest-in-Charge) can be contacted on 01647 253164 or [email protected]. Her day off is Thursday. Pastoral Care If you would like, or know someone who would be glad of, a call or “virtual” visit from Rev’d Ruth Frampton, or another member of the church community, please contact the rectory (contact details above), or the Churches’ Administrator (see Getting in touch… below). Coronavirus The Government have announced that churches can open for private prayer from Monday 15 June, providing that all the necessary measures are in place to ensure that those entering our church buildings are safe. These include: • Special cleaning arrangements • Provision of hand sanitisers and/or washing facilities at the entrance • Roping off areas so that visitors have limited access to “safe” areas • Removal of all paper and books etc as the virus can live on these surfaces for up to 72 hours • Social distancing needs to be observed inside churches. At the time of going to print, individual PCCs are considering the best way to open our churches while ensuring they are safe. It is likely that some of our six buildings will be open for one or two days per week. Notices will be displayed at all six churches giving details of the opening arrangements across the Mission Community, so that those who wish to visit a church building for private prayer can do so. Again, at the time of going to print, there is no indication of when churches will be open for shared worship services – the arrangements outlined above are only for private prayer. 23
We are continuing, however, to hold regular services by telephone – at 10am, each Sunday morning, and a service of evening prayer at 6pm each Wednesday evening. You do not need internet access, but simply a landline or mobile telephone Between 5 and 10 minutes before the service begins, please dial 0333 011 0616 and enter the code 334 7721 when asked. You will also be asked to give your name. The cost of the call is the standard cost for any 01, 02 or 03 number, but will vary according to your telephone contract. It may well be covered by your “inclusive” minutes, or by free evening or weekend calls, but you are advised to check. Resources During this extended time of church closure, you may find the following online and telephone resources helpful: Daily Prayer: https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/join-us- service-daily-prayer General prayer resources: https://www.churchofengland.org/more/media- centre/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-parishes/coronavirus-covid-19-liturgy-and- prayer Special Pentecost “Lego” service: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjA_rB3eYes&t=7s Daily Hope – a free phone line of hymns, reflections and prayers – 0800 804 8044 Recording of Rev’d Ruth Frampton’s “Reflection” from the previous Sunday – 01647 407047 If you are anxious about the current situation, or would like prayer or pastoral support (e.g. because of illness or bereavement), please do not hesitate to contact Rev’d Ruth Frampton or the Churches’ Administrator (Steve Cook) – contact details above and below. There is a separate notice elsewhere in the magazine giving details of how the churches are working together with local parish councils and others to co-ordinate shopping, collect medication etc for those who need to “self-isolate” or who can’t leave their homes. 24
Teign Valley Larder Please see the separate information in the magazine about the Teign Valley Larder in the porch of Christow church - where people can donate food, and those in need of food can pick some things up for free. Anyone can use it – it’s for the whole Teign Valley area, not just for Christow! We’d like to help reduce food waste, and we especially hope it will help people who are struggling at the moment. This initiative is supported by Dartmoor National Park Authority. From the registers… Funerals: 12 June – Malcolm Browning (Dunsford) Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones. Getting in touch… In the current situation, no baptisms, weddings or other services are taking place in church. Limited graveside funeral services are permitted. If you wish to discuss plans for a funeral, a postponed or future baptism/christening, banns of marriage, wedding, interment of ashes or memorial service, or have any other enquiry, please contact Steve Cook, the Churches’ Administrator, on 01392 832332 or email [email protected] CHANGE OF EDITOR We are indebted to Rose Campbell Crocker who has stood down as editor of Unity magazine after many years of dedicated service – she deserves enormous thanks for all her work, commitment, and energy. Thank you! We are also immensely grateful to Michelle Frost for taking on the production of the magazine. It would be great if we could form a small team to help her (thank you to those who have already expressed an interest) – please contact Michelle or the Churches’ Administrator ([email protected]) if you are interested. Michelle’s contact email address for the magazine is [email protected] 25
EDITORIAL I would firstly like to thank Rose Campbell-Crocker for her hard work and dedication editing the Unity Magazine for over 8 years. I am quickly learning that I have big shoes fill and I hope that I do Rose justice. THANK YOU, ROSE Hello, I would like to introduce myself my name is Michelle Frost; I am married with 15- year-old twins (son and daughter) and a lovely 10-year-old stepdaughter. I live and work in the Teign Valley; my husband and I have a cleaning business and I also dedicate my time caring for the elderly. I chose to volunteer to become editor of Unity as I know what a loss to the community it would be if we lost the magazine and I would like to thank all our advertisers and subscribers for your continued support. Many of us will have seen businesses close overnight with no idea of when we can get back to some form of normality and in these unprecedented times I hope we all have some light at the end of tunnel and security for our families and friends. During these past couple of months, I have been negotiating teenagers and their home schooling, I quit after the first week!!! All joking aside we are lucky to live where we do and the community spirit in all our neighboring villages have been amazing, ensuring that our most vulnerable and isolating, friends, neighbors and family have had all provisions they need and I am hopeful that this will continue for the upcoming weeks and months if needed. So, a huge thank you to everyone concerned. Kind Regards Michelle 26
A LETTER FROM REV FRAMPTON July: It’s summer time! School’s out! Bucket and spade time! Summer fetes and shows! Or so it has been in the past. This year we are seeing something different: summer was in May; school has barely been “in”; buckets and spades may not take us as far afield as in previous years, and for some may be restricted to the sand pit in the garden; at this time of writing, we may not safely gather for our summer shows and fetes. We have not before experienced a year like this; 2020 is a year of change: the “wind of change” is well and truly blowing! The Rectory is on a hill and I am almost as sensitive to changes in wind direction as was Mary Poppins: the east wind brings sunshine, the west wind almost invariably brings rain. And both are necessary, both are “good”. We have no control over them; we cannot alter them or manipulate them for our own ends. The wind blows where it wills bringing sunshine or rain and we must make the best of it. The gardens and the fields, the flowers and the crops flourish and grow only when both sunshine and the rain come in due season. All of us who love our gardens share the delight of our Creator in nurturing new life and beauty. God breathed the wind of life, the Spirit of life, into creation; we can only dig and sow and plant. But the same Spirit of life and love inspires us as we steward the earth. We are all subject to the wind of change, the wind of the Spirit: ‘The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’ (John 3:8) Change is not easy; often our instinctive reaction is to resent it, reject it, withdraw from it. We do not like not being in control; we find it difficult to live with uncertainty. It is bad enough having unpredictable weather, without our whole lives being turned upside down as well. Perhaps we can learn from our farmers who constantly live and work with uncertainty – will there be enough rain? Whatever our circumstances let us try and see this time as an opportunity to reimagine and reframe our lives, trusting that the Spirit is active and working with us in this wind of change. Ruth Frampton 27

BRIDFORD Ted Clapton 1935 - 2020 A warm and deeply felt thank you for the many cards, emails and letters I have received from Bridford, Christow and other Teign Valley villagers. We enjoyed many happy years in Bridford and our leaving for health and family convenience was a great wrench. Ted's diagnosis and more recent events have proved it to have been a wise move. It is comforting to know that many of Ted's qualities are still remembered. He had a tendency to dismiss his own achievements in life as 'luck' whilst remaining true to his conviction that we should all, in our own small ways, try to make the world a better, fairer place for everyone. He appreciated the active, community spirit of Bridford and would have been chuffed but slightly embarrassed at being remembered. I am fortunate in having a wonderfully supportive family but when 'normality’, resumes will happily put on the kettle for visitors. Thank you and best wishes, Annette. THANK YOU ROSE CAMPBELL-CROCKER We would like to thank Rose for the amazing job she has done for the last 8 years as Editor of Unity. A lot of thought and effort went into producing the magazine each month, including all the wonderful verses and poems that were always a delight to read. We are also extremely grateful for the money Rose has been able to donate to Bridford Church over the years from profits raised. It has been particularly welcome this year when revenue has been very much reduced due to the Church having to be closed. We know Rose will still have plenty of things to do that will keep her busy and we wish her well. Bridford PCC 30
BRIDFORD PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council would like to express its thanks to Rose Campbell-Crocker for her sterling efforts in editing and producing Unity magazine for the past eight years and to Michelle Frost for stepping in to take over as the new editor. There are so many unsung ‘heroes’ quietly working away behind the scenes for the good of their communities in these strange and unprecedented times and it goes without saying that you are all very much appreciated. However, particular thanks are extended to Kathy Fitzjohn and Tessa Derby for running the support service on behalf of the church and to Joanne for keeping the weekly Post Office service operational. Parish Council Meetings Bridford Parish Council successfully held its first online Zoom meeting on 25th May and a draft copy of the minutes can be found on the Bridford website. Annual Governance and Accountability Return 2019/20 The AGAR part two 2019/20 and the Receipts and Payments account 2019/20 relating to Bridford Parish Council were approved by the Parish Council at the above meeting and signed by the Chairman and Clerk. Telephone Box The Parish Council adopted the telephone box at the end of last year and it is planned to convert it into a library containing books and jigsaw puzzles. In order to do this, the Parish Council is looking for a volunteer to make and put up shelving and it is hoped that there may be somebody out there who would like to take on this community project for the village and also somebody to look after the library once up and running. Any costs for materials would be reimbursed. If think you could help, please contact the Clerk tel. 01647 252805 / email: [email protected] However, in the meantime, a notice has been placed on the door and boxes have been put in the kiosk to receive donations of books and jigsaw puzzles which residents are welcome to borrow / exchange and return when finished with. Play Park At the time of writing, the play equipment in the Play Park remains out of bounds due to Government instructions relating to the Coronavirus, although the grounds are open to walk in. 31
Recent Planning Decisions by Dartmoor National Park Authority The Hide, Bridford - Grant of Conditional Planning Permission re shed and wood store (retrospective) Land at Lower Hole, Bridford – Refusal to issue Certificate of Lawful Use for the existing use of two mobile field shelters Burnicombe Farm, Bridford – Grant of Conditional Planning Permission re replacement windows Grants and Donations The Parish Council would like to thank the local skittles teams for a kind donation of £60 specifically to be spent on the Village Garden. Grants of £750 from District Councillor Stephen Purser and £1,000 from County Councillor Jerry Brook have also been gratefully received for future refurbishment work planned for the Play Park. Allotments The Parish Council is pleased to report that for the first time in many years, all of the allotments currently now have tenants. Next Parish Council Meeting During the current situation, Town and Parish Councils are not permitted to meet face to face and so the regular meetings of Bridford Parish Council on the first Monday of each month will no longer take place for the foreseeable future. The next meeting will be an online Zoom meeting at a date yet to be decided. Please keep an eye on the Bridford website for details of the date, time and meeting access details. All members of the public will be welcome to join the meeting. BRIDFORD WI Another month has passed in which the WI has not been able to enjoy all the lovely events we had planned. However, having mastered the intricacies of Zoom, a group of us from Bridford have a regular chat and catch-up on Wednesday afternoons which goes some way towards keeping us all in touch. In the meantime, we are looking forward to when we are able to get together again properly. 32

CHRISTOW WI Hello ladies of the Teign Valley I hope you are all staying alert, well and keeping safe. Up until this year I associated the word Corona with my happy childhood. It was a fizzy drink that you bought from the corona man, delivered to your street in a glass bottle that you could return and get a refund on. How things change! We will not be meeting in July and I have heard that the Christow show has been cancelled so the judges will miss out on their delicious WI lunches. We look forward to next year and a bigger and better show. The Devon WI celebrated its centenary on 14th June, an impressive milestone indeed. Such a shame there could be no gathering. We were all encouraged to have a cream tea in our own gardens to mark the occasion. I hope you enjoyed yours. we should all be proud to belong to such a long standing and worthwhile organisation. Remember as part of the WI you are not alone but have a real connection to others both locally and nationally. As I write this, schools have reopened for some children, those who have been shielding can leave the house, more businesses are trading, and some sports are taking place behind closed doors. The new normal has begun to emerge, with 2 metre distancing and the wearing of masks and face coverings now the norm in enclosed spaces. Things we would not have dreamt of. Try not to focus on the cancelled events, anxiety and isolation of 2020 but remember there have been positives. Many of us have found new ways to stay in touch, learnt new skills, tackled the to do-list and revelled in the nature around us. We have appreciated those key workers and volunteers who have continued to keep us safe and had more time to get know our neighbours. Our environment has been less polluted as the roads have been quieter and we have bought food locally. We have realised that it is not just our physical health that is at risk, but we have been encouraged to be kind to our mind and take care of our mental health too. Make sure you have some small things to look forward to every day. The Christow WI will meet again you can be sure of that. Looking forward to seeing you all. VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS TEIGN VALLEY COMMUNITY HALL Up-date on the hall refurbishment: At the Zoom meeting held on 8th June the following was discussed: The Refurbishment Group has continued to search for grants with some welcome success. Heating: the plan is for the current system to continue until insulation of the walls and ceiling has been carried out, then to install destratification fans to push the warmed air downwards towards the seating area. Measurements have shown that a great deal of heat is lost through the ceiling and walls, (the building is over 20 years old). Insulation to keep the hall warm, something that has never been achieved, and to save fuel, is the first objective. Hot water: At present the boiler system uses water storage tanks; such tanks are now condemned as potentially harbouring legionnaire's disease. For hand washing local electric instant, timed hot water on demand, is what we want. The showers in the men's and ladies' changing rooms will be replaced with two electric showers, in cubicles, in each changing room, and one in the toilet for disabled people. We shall have the cost of the showers to which must be added the cost of the cubicles. But this will, in the long run, be a saving and removes the risk of legionnaire's disease. Dishwasher: this is now essential, there is a grant available which we shall ask for. Specifications and quotes for all the above work is already ongoing, and it will start as soon as practical. The Insulation will be a very costly business: but it is only common sense to wrap some insulation round the building rather than sending more heat out into space. We can receive a Government grant towards the cost, a long as we can find a lot more funds to add to it. If we can't get all of it then we expect to still be allowed to receive a portion of the Govt. grant. 37
Heating the building: we shall still need some form of heating and we have had several heating contractors visiting the building with a view to providing quotes. There are grants available for this type of work as well, but they are not yet available, as funds are still directed towards Covid 19 projects. We are also thinking about when it will be possible to reopen and for what sort of activities, we hope soon, as of course there are still some costs but no income. and we all want to be able to meet up again and have some sort of social life! As we all know, everything is slow now, if moving at all, but we shall keep you updated on progress. Briony . TVCH Secretary TEIGN VALLEY NURSERY We, at Teign Valley Nursery, would just like to say a big thank you for your continued support and patience throughout this uncertain time. We realise that ordering plants over the phone is less than perfect as it’s nicer to be able to look at them in person. For this reason, we’re pleased to announce that we are able to start opening up the nursery grounds again. This means you will be able to have a look around the sales polytunnel and the plants outside. At first, we are going to do this with pre-arranged times. After this interim period, we hope to return back to regular opening hours. If you’d like to book an appointment please email us at [email protected] or phone us on 01647252654. These visits will be done in accordance with the HTA guidelines which mean that social distancing will be practiced and a maximum of two people per household will be allowed in at any one time. We will also be continuing the current system of pre-ordering and collecting specific items from the gate for those who prefer it 38

A VIEW FROM THE HILL Summer solstice, and the longest day, has passed. From now, days grow shorter, and there’ll be less daylight in the valley. Plants tended from tiny seedlings, planted out and watered with love and care are starting to bear fruit and an amazing abundance is revealed. After anxious weeks of hot dry weather, hauling irrigation from crop to crop, a break in the weather saw the long hungry gap come to an end seemingly overnight in a flood of mange tout, broad beans, beetroots and courgettes. Despite nature’s new bounty, there’s no less work on the farm. Through this month we’ll be sowing more peas and french beans into our warm Devon clay soil. Kohl rabi and fennel will be planted alongside successional waves of lettuce, herbs and crunchy radish to keep our salads fresh and interesting. We’re already harvesting carrots, but we’re still sowing them too. The July sowings will provide us with enough of crunchy roots to keep veg boxes brimming through the winter. Any day now, we’ll start lifting our first new potatoes, little waxy treats that have loved the recent showers. In the polytunnel, tomatoes ripen like oversized jewels. These unprecedented Covid 19 times remind me of the true value of community. Since March we’ve received offers of help from people across the valley and we’re welcoming over a dozen volunteers each week. It’s been heartwarming to see popular markets arranged by pubs like the Nobody and Cridford Inns. With proper local farmers, like Helena from Beardon’s Dexters and Rachel from Little Leigh Farm, selling directly to their neighbours and friends. For every pound spent at local farmers markets or in a community supported agriculture scheme (CSA), twice the amount stays in the local economy than if it 42
were spent in a supermarket. Consider too the sustainability of local food, of not flying in your salad from Spain or your lamb from New Zealand. When you buy your veggies, bread or meat from outside a picturesque Teign Valley pub, they come with more nutrients but less plastic, more freshness and flavour but zero food miles. Suddenly, a whole new local food system seems possible. After the challenges and fears of lockdown subside, I hope we all think twice about where our food comes from. In the recession that follows, buying locally grown and produced food means keeping your money in your community, while eating healthier and supporting our fragile environment. As I sit in the orchard watching a busy bumble bee hurrying between clover flowers, I’m reminded that it’s time to get on with weeding the cabbages. Tim Dickens is a grower at Oxen Park Farm, Ashton. Weekly veg boxes are available for collection on Tuesdays www.onthehill.camp/oxenparkfarm @oxenparkfarm 43
Since opening on 8th May we’ve been busy. We had a fantastic response when we started with lots of donations of non-perishable food. We’ve received some grant money to buy more. But both food stocks and funds are disappearing fast so as well as an update this is a renewed call for donations of food. As soon as we can open a bank account we’ll be able to accept cash donations too. In our first month of operation nearly 700 food items were donated and around 500 items were taken, mainly from the larder in Christow church porch and some from the ‘mini-larder’ box in Bridford church porch. More and more people are visiting the larder every day to collect basic supplies that they would otherwise have to travel to find, or worse, go hungry. Their feedback tells us this is hugely appreciated; it’s fantastic that as a community we can look after each other in this way. Other larder visitors have used the ‘borrow an item’ facility when they’ve run out of something when the shop is closed, and replaced it when they could, or donated something else instead. We’ve also introduced an ‘Out of Date’ box for items that are past their best before date but still good to eat. We want everyone to use the OOD box – it’s all about preventing perfectly edible items from going in the bin. Soon our ‘reduce food waste’ offers will include surplus fresh vegetables from local suppliers and gardens too. We post regular notices on our Facebook page facebook.com/groups/tvlarder/showing what’s currently available so please do join the group for regular updates. The grant money we’ve received from DNPA, Christow Community Land Trust and the Devon Communities Fund has enabled us to keep stock levels topped up by buying the items that donations don’t often include, like washing up liquid and basic toiletries. But we always need more. If you can spare some canned or other non-perishable items you can drop off small quantities in one of the donations boxes which are at Bridford church, Dunsford Church, Christow Stores, Christow 44
church, the Nobody Inn car park and the Cridford Inn. Bring larger quantities to Barn End, Village Road, Christow or get in touch via our web page to arrange collection. • We currently need baked beans, tinned meat and fish, tinned fruit and vegetables, long life fruit juice, pasta sauce, cereals, biscuits, rice pudding, custard, laundry liquid and pet food. • We have masses of milk, rice, pasta, soup, teabags and those little bottles of shower gel you get in hotels, and while we’ll never say no, these items aren’t a priority for us right now. Thank you to our volunteer cleaners and stock managers and especially to all our donors. Please keep the donations coming! WELLMOOR COMMUNITY HEALTH & WELLBEING IN NORTH EAST DARTMOOR The Moretonhampstead Parish Council, Wellmoor and Morecare Moretonhampstead have joined forces in order to establish a public Care Line service as part of the local coordinated response to the Coronavirus emergency. Care Line provides practical and emotional support to anyone who needs it by connecting them with support network of local volunteers or just offering a friendly listening ear. Daily phone calls are offered to help those who are self-isolating or feeling lonely to feel more connected, and Care Line can also help arrange support with various tasks such as picking up shopping or prescriptions, posting mail, taking pets to the vet, or transport to emergency medical appointments. Care Line will offer support to anyone in the North-East Dartmoor area by connecting them with their database of local volunteers or by redirecting those in need to other local support that is available. To contact Care Line, call Freephone 0800 622 6245 or email [email protected]. If you would like to join as a volunteer, email [email protected]. MORECARE, Moretonhampstead Have you any time to spare? We badly need HELP! Morecare Moretonhampstead has a problem. We had 35 to 40 people who were volunteers who took people to hospital, picked up prescriptions, and did all the other things that help individuals live independently. Now we have 4! Mostly because our volunteers are either over 70 or have medical reasons for not driving for us at the moment. These 4 have continued to take people to hospital all through the lockdown and are amazing. If you can help and would like to ask about what is involved please phone Morecare on 0800 622 6245 or email [email protected] 46
THANK YOU FROM CHRISTOW STORES It’s been quite the most extraordinary experience to run Christow Stores during a global pandemic ! Underpinning our efforts has been army of the most incredible community volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes bagging flour, stacking shelves, picking orders and making our hastily conceived home delivery service a reality. Whenever I asked the community for assistance, egg boxes, laminators etc it was there in abundance, demonstrating the very best in our Valley. I will forever be grateful for all of your support. I’d like to take a moment to publicly thank the following superstars Jill, Rosie, Jaki, Ted and Erin, Kevin, Colin, Matt, Ali, Jess, Phillipa, Milly and and the two Andy’s, Kathleen, Lou and Rowland, Michelle, Rachel and Jo and the many others without whom I literally couldn’t have run the shop. In amongst the 100’s kilos of flour, umpteen boxes of fresh produce and mountains of ubiquitous loo roll I also want to acknowledge the countless little random acts of kindness from customers. The slices of cake and cut flowers from your now immaculate gardens, emails and greetings cards, so many kind and thoughtful words that buoyed us all up through this time. As a shop we have been able to cover trading losses from 2019 and make donations to Exeter Foodbank, Teign Valley food larder and The British Red Cross. As things return to a more normal footing we have reopened for full post office services. Our opening hours remain 10.30-3.30 Monday to Saturday for the foreseeable future to allow socially distanced restocking. Looking forward to serving you. Kay Hammond Owner Christow Store 47
