Transforming Encounters One of the most touching events in the Easter narrative surrounds the two men Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. Together they went to Pilate, requesting to take the body of the dead Jesus. They wrapped him in strips of linen, bound him up with spices and perfumes, before placing him in the garden tomb where on Sunday Mary Magdalene met the risen Christ. Nicodemus gets one other sighting in the Gospels. Early on he seeks Jesus out and has a long night- time conversation with him. Nicodemus is a Pharisee. His friends and colleagues are resolutely opposed to everything which Jesus stands for. But clearly Nicodemus is intrigued, challenged and changed by meeting him. So transformed is he by the encounter that he makes the most touching of gestures possible at the point of death… and his actions are remembered for ever. Churches are places of transforming encounter. We meet God and God’s people, and the experience changes us. It changes everyone. Our beautiful churches must have been instrumental in countless such events over the centuries. Their stones carry the poignant memories of lives touched and changed by the hand of God. At the Shillingford Annual Meeting this year, as well as carrying out the necessary business which has to be done, we spent time imagining how this might be used to shape our life and mission. In our prayer and worship we recognised that Shillingford Church, dedicated to St George the Martyr, could be a place of encounter in all sorts of different ways. And we decided to start setting up opportunities for local residents, for travellers and pilgrims, to stop, think and meet with God. It’s a vision which could serve any church. It’s especially relevant to rural churches which don’t serve large populations filled with busy parents and children hungry for life. We’re going to hold our first Open Church on Saturday 11th May from 11am to 12.30. And we’ll repeat it every second Saturday in the month until the autumn when we can review how it’s been going. You’re most welcome to drop in at any time. You’ll find opportunities to listen. A short act of worship. Reflective music. Places of prayer. Books, posters, symbol which remind us of the history of faith cradled within the sacred building. And the space for encounter. And as we build up our resources, we’ll have more ways for the Open Church to function. We can start advertising it. Anyone in the village can come. Any traveller or pilgrim can come. Who knows how it may help to open our eyes to the glory of God… Mike Partridge

FILM NIGHT - Their Finest Friday May 10th at 7.45pm Dunchideock Village Hall. Starring Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy, this film is a romantic comedy, but with an edge. It is set at the time of Dunkirk and tells the story of a young secretary who joins a film production company making propaganda films aimed at boosting the country’s morale. In particular, she finds herself researching a film based on the experiences of two sisters who took their own small boat across to France. “Sparklingly adapted”, says the Daily Telegraph, giving it four stars. “This is a handsome, rousing, rigorous entertainment, and you can’t help play along with it.” It achieved a very high Rotten Tomatoes approval score of 90%. We found it very enjoyable. Peter Goodchild. We will be sending nearly £1,000 to the Village Hall, approximately £200 to an outside charity and almost exactly £1,000 to the church, which was raised at the champagne supper! Editor – a fantastic achievement, thank you so much to Peter and Penny! Tribute to Peter Young “When you go home”, this is the first line of the Burma Star poem, that Peter Young traditionally read at the remembrance service in Dunchideock for many years. Peter will also be remembered for his contribution to the spirit of the local community, his artistry, wit and character always making its presence felt. Many will recall his beautiful line drawings of Dunchideock Church which were at times used on personalised greeting cards from the Parish. Peter sadly passed away in August of last year and up until now his ashes have remained with the family, but on Monday 8th April, to the strains of ‘I vow to Thee my Country’, a small gathering of relatives and friends finally laid him to rest with a respectful graveside service conducted by our new Priest in Charge Revd. Ruth Frampton. Now Peter himself has ‘Gone Home’ to be reunited with his beloved wife Mavis who passed away in December 2002. May they rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon them. Ray Mallett. Churchwarden

From the Churchwardens It is with sadness I have to inform villagers that flowers and plants are being STOLEN from the churchyard. This has been reported to the churchwardens on a couple of occasions now this year, and is a disgraceful act by somebody who has removed flowers lovingly placed on graves. There is a public right of way that many people use, and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of our country churchyard. The churchwardens and PCC would not want, or expect, to put up security cameras to catch those involved in this selfish act. If the person(s) doing this are reading this article; we ask you to STOP and show more respect to the memory of those who have died. For the rest of us, please keep your eyes open as you walk around the village and contact the police and/or the churchwardens if you witness anything amiss around the church. ******** On happier matters – our 3 Lent Lunches were well-supported with Rod & Ben kindly supplying a variety of delicious soups, and Lesley providing a different menu to accompany. Our thanks to them and all who supported the lunches that made a surplus of £163.50 for church funds.
