REVIEW - WE CAN COOK I didn’t end up doing anything more with this idea, but that’s not to say that it wasn’t successful as an experiment. It was a good idea, just not original enough for me to put more time in to developing. For the design I had taken inspiration from Studio Anorak, using bright, cheerful colours that children would be drawn to, I was also inspired by American designer Ashley Mary who works with organic shapes, looking at her work helped me explore this in my design. To make the book more existing for children I created a simple word and image game, this style of matching colourful pictures and words is learning tool that already exists, by adding it to the cookbook it adds an extra dimension of learning. The game features all the ingredients and tools that would be needed for each recipe, it offers a different way for a caregiver to teach child about the different words and images, and then they get the fun of making real food from the things they have learnt about. I also thought that adding the placemat to the book would make a nice set. Children could proudly have their own cookbook, game and a placemat, at a young age they like to have their own little stash of things. 101 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

NEXT IDEA Returning again to cookbooks, my next idea focused on brightly coloured illustrations and simplified instructions, with the addition of two friendly characters that helped the book flow by giving instructions and hints. I designed the book to a small square size, a lot of early learning books come use this format as it is easy for children to hold. 102 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

REVIEW -LITTLE COOK BOOK I like this design. I think it was a good starting point that helped me to develop other ideas. By this point I started using Fredoka One as my main font, I think it is ideal for this style of work, very clean and easy to read. At the time, I had finished making this I was interviewing educators and learning more about wording. I became aware that the instructions in the book might not written in the clearest way, that was something I would need to learn more about. As far as the design goes, I was inspired by Studio Anorak and Erin Jang. As a designer Jang makes a lot of products for children and families, her work is a great resource, the idea of the smiley face suns came from seeing how she had used similar imagery in her book. 105 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

MAIN OUTCOMES 107 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

MAIN OUTCOMES I developed two main outcomes ‘Conversations about Play’ a book that brings together all the things I have learnt about the theme of Play and Education so far, it’s an interesting book with lots of great information. ‘Lunch Bunch’ this is a set of cooking resources for early learners, it based around a friendly bunch of fruit and vegetables who help children to learn about cooking. The set is made up of two books and a resource set. 108 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY

REVIEW -CONVERSATIONS ABOUT PLAY ‘Conversations about Play’ is the most substantial book I’ve designed. I put a lot of effort in to researching the subject and have drawn together different resources. I am still not confident with my design skills, but I have progressed to be better at researching, which is a skill I have put to use in this book I tried to make a well-designed book, one which is both pleasing to look at and to read. I pushed myself to use an editorial style, something that I haven’t used much of it the past. I spent time looking at layout examples in digital books and magazines, I aimed for a simple, clean looking layout that would have a few stronger elements, this can be seen in the typographic poster spreads that I have used. I think the book has turned out well, it is the most organised outcome I’ve made, some of the design elements could still be improved, but I am happy with the overall look and think the typographic pieces are some of the best work I’ve made. REVIEW - LUNCH BUNCH SERIES 125 These little books have been a large amount of work, now I’m at the point when I’m looking back on all I have achieved in a relatively short time frame, I’ve gone from struggling with the theme to having a good selection of outcomes. These books have pulled together things I’ve learnt during my research, I have considered what makes a book interesting to a child, the use of colour and friendly characters. I have considered the books potential as a learning tool and how it could be used to help children meet their outcomes in early education. I attempted to use phonics but released that I would need help to understand them, rather than focusing on phonics I tried to keep the sentences simple and easy for a child and their caregiver to read together. I took inspiration from the idea of a story sack, and thought about what things would work well together, this is when I created the alphabet poster and design for apron, bag etc. The Learn & Play book brings together the ideas had. One thing that I would have liked to include was a plush version of a character, however that remained just as an idea. For the design of the books, I was inspired by the work of Britney Fong, I think at times I took too much inspiration from some of her designs, but as they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, as I became more confident with what I was making the less I needed to be inspired by others work. The series of books all used Fredoka One, the most child friendly font I own, I kept the colours bright and the illustrations simple, fun and playful, with the added sprinkling of silliness on some pages. One thing I’m not happy with is that I used recipes I’d found online. Ideally, I could have collaborated with someone, that would have been a nice project, but the timeframe would have been an obstacle. Another thing that I’m not sure about is the length of the book, it might be a bit too long to hold a child’s attention, but then that is a minor thing, and they wouldn’t have to do all the recipes at once. SEMESTER REVIEW I’ve found this semester hard; I realise that I need more support than is available, directing my own work is hard for me, I’ve pulled a lot of stuff together at the last minute, but that isn’t the way I like to work. I’ve felt that I wouldn’t manage to make anything that looked like the work of a 3rd year student, at times I didn’t know what I could do with the theme, I haven’t enjoyed a lot of what I’ve been doing, and I’ve made a subject that I was interested seem impossible to work with, however I’ve kept working and managed to create main outcomes that are good pieces of design and sort of meet what I set out to achieve. 126 PREPARATION FOR EXTENDED STUDY
