1 Hi Ash, I know a couple of my peers who are doing higher education courses & short courses to improve themselves. There are also new areas spearing up in the business like digital, agile etc. but it looks like our strategy is to bring people in rather than train the young, ambitious talents in house, any reason why? -KelvinThere are definitely new roles that have come up and that will be coming up in the future to fulfil our Digital Telco agenda and to date, we have actually moved more people internally to these roles than hire from outside. The first big appointment we made was our Digital Transformation Manager, Alex Abrokwah who came from our Technology team. Our first squad that is work- ing in MyVodafone app is also made up of internal employees who are being trained on new skills like scrum, etc. We will always look internally to fill new roles especially where we feel we can train but there will also be areas where we bring in experienced skills who can retrain and share best practices.
2 Hello Ash, Are there any measures in place for employees at the Experience Centre who have been working for the business for a number of years? -Mary Our customer facing teams are some of our most critical em- ployees because they represent our brand daily. The various award programs that we have put in place for example Front- line Star Awards and other recognition program like Experi- ence Centre Moment of Truth, signify the focus we have as an organization for our Experience Centre staff. As well, we have put in place numerous training and coaching programs to build capability in that space and empower the teams. Per- sonal development is both the responsibility of the employ- ee and the Line Manager and so we encourage that everyone should have a development plan and work with their Line Manager towards achieving the goals and objectives. New digital skills will be needed in our Digital Telco journey and we need each of us to learn new ways of working and be in- quisitive about the new Digital era.Tongue twister: Hashtag Ask Ash—You cannot say it more than once. Laugh Out LoudFamily Wahala oooTwo men met at a bus stop and struck up a conversation. One ofthem kept complaining of family problems. Finally, the other mansaid:\"You think you have family problems? Listen to my situation. A fewyears ago I met a young widow with a grown-up daughter and we gotmarried.\"Later my father married my step daughter. That made my step-daughter my stepmother and my father became my stepson. Also,my wife became mother in-law of her father-in-law.Then the daughter of my wife, my stepmother, had a son. This boywas my half-brother because he was my father's son, but he was alsothe son of my wife's daughter which made him my wife's grand-son.That made me the grandfather of my half-brother.\"This was nothing until my wife and Ihad a son. TakingTime OffW hat is your idea of a vacation? Short, long or a weekend get- away? It doesn’t take too much planning to take a break from theeveryday routines of life. A short breather from the hustle and bustle goes along way to make you more fruitful and productive.A spontaneous weekend away works a treat if planned with a bit of budgetand fun in mind…You can stay in Accra or even on the outskirts. There are var-ious hotels that would cater to your whims and caprices if one should be soinclined. To go further out would demand a bit of research and some cash. Ghana hasmany interesting places to visit on the fly. What is it you want to achieve with your time away? Sometimes all that isneeded is quality time by yourself or with a few friends and family. Or if youare by yourself, chill out at the hotel lounge, catch up on movies or if there isa swimming pool, bask in the tropical African sun and take a dip in the pool asyou see fit.
Asking friends and family for the tried, tested and true destinations always helpswith the excitement. If you are with friends, there is an option to share rooms to make the costcheaper. You can also either car pool or travel by public transport (though youmay be subject to traffic nuances).Look out for the local tourist attractions, interesting things to do, places to visitand watering holes if that is what is desired. You could have a fun time on holidays both locally and abroad. The trick is toplan ahead and research on the place you want to go…Travelling abroad always takes a toll on the pocket. Summer is always a trickytime to travel. However, booking a few months in advance helps a whole lot. Besure you have the required Visa for the desired destination before paying forthat very expensive plane fare.Travelling after the summer season (Early Autumn) is a mite cheaper, if youdon’t mind the slightly nipper weather if you are heading towards Europe andits environs. If you have your visa and ticket sorted, then get packing…Be mindful of how much you pack and how many bags are allowed. You don’twant to get into arguments with customs and having to repack at the airport.Make room for the shopping spree when you are packing.Ensure you put the required items in your hand luggage…No sharp knives or liq-uids over 100 ml.Have fun on that vacation…But ensure you come back refreshed and ready to take on the world….Written by Abena Ayim

Book of the Quarter Book Summary I came across \"Our Iceberg is Melting. Changing and Succeeding Under Any Con- ditions\" when looking for a book on organi- zational change. I was then pleased to see that the forward was written by Spencer Johnson who authored \"Who Moved My Cheese\" and co-authored \"The One Minute Manager,\" both very popular books. The authors use a fable about a penguin colony in Antarctica that has lived on the same iceberg for many years. When one curious bird discovers problem signs in the iceberg, few penguins want to listen to him. They are fine the way things are and don't want to change. The story is analo- gous to the common situation where people don't want to face up to difficult problems at home or at work. Once a small group of penguins came to understand that their iceberg actually was melting, they 1) created a sense of urgen- cy in the colony to deal with the difficult prob-lem, 2) put a carefully selected group in charge of guiding the change, 3) found the sensible vision of a better future, 4) communicated that vision so oth- ers would understand and accept it, 5) removed as many obstacles to action as was practical, 6) cre-ated some sort of success quickly, 7) never let up until the new way of life was firmly established, and, 8) finally, ensured that the changes would not be overcome by stubborn, hard-to-die traditions.HR Library - 3rd Floor

Digital Street Mobile Access Technologies M obile Telephony is such a beautiful thing. The kind of stuff we can do with those small devices in our palms is amazing. All this is however hugely reliant on ac- cess technologies (2G, 3G, etc.). One must really wonder what all these Gs are about. It seems to be all about the Gs these days First things first, the G stands for Generation and the number pre- ceding the G its maturity and technological advancement or in more simple terms, “How new and good it is” There once was 1G, 1st Generation back in the 80s. It was entirely analogue. You remember those huge phones with antennas at the back? Yes, most of those ones them were 1G capable phones. 1Gwas all about voice calls. No internet, electronic mails, not even text messaging.1G was replaced with 2G in the early 90s. The 2nd generation of mobile access technologies was all digi-tal and was actually the first mobile telephony platform to allow text messaging (SMS). Call quality wasalso dramatically improved with the emergence of 2G. Further enhancements to the 2nd generationtechnology enabled internet connectivity. Improved forms of 2G (2.5G, 2.75G) simply came with im-proved data experience which could theoretically be as high as 384kbps. That’s pretty slow right?????The 3rd generation of Mobile access technologies (3G) has become a lot popular now after its emergenceduring the late 90s (1998). This is mainly due to the fact that it allows users to access the internet atspeeds far greater than 2G could ever give them. 3G therefore enables voice and video calling, file trans-mission over the internet, online TV, online gaming among others. The era of 3G also coincided with the emergence of sleeker looking and more pocket friendly phones. Al-most all phones on the market can support 3G although there are a few phones that still cant. The evolu-tion of mobile phones can be looked at in a slightly humorous way. In the past, the phones were big, thenthey got smaller and now they are getting big again. Funny, isn’t it??With 4G now available, data rates are now being pushed to outrageous limits with download speeds ashigh as 100mbps. In some parts of the world, 2G networks have been completely shut down to make theuse of those frequencies for higher access technologies. How can one know whether he or she is enjoying 2G or 3G on their phone? It’s simple. Just look on thetop right corner of your phone screen, if you see an E or G by the network bars, then you are on 2G. If it’s3G or H, then you are enjoying 3G and if you see 4G, then you are on a 4G network. With the emergence of key technological advancements like the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud com-puting among others, borders are being pushed in mobile telephony to provide users with ultra-high datadownload and upload rates. With plans to roll out 5G by 2020 which could offer download rates as high as1Gbps, the future is set to be a brighter, better, more interesting and more entertaining for all consumers.I am sure all the stakeholders will join hands at the next mobile world congress and say in the voice ofMaximus from Gladiator, “Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained?”Article by Yaw Gyabaah
