Executive Director Juliet Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet may be the Rick Valenzuela greatest of all love stories. In Juliet, Regiment Program Director 2011 REPERTOIRE adds a new twist to tale by telling it from the Dan Farrell heroine’s point of view. The Prologue begins with Program Advisor, Medical Director East of Eden Juliet’s theme—romantic music underscoring her Dr. Dan Richardson graceful beauty. A trumpet fanfare signals a drastic Tour Manager by Lee Holdridge mood shift in Act One. As the conflict between the Allan Dekko Montagues and Capulets turns violent, aggressive Tour Assistants Requiem music and contrasting visuals represent the struggle Joseph Benavidez, Daniel Cook, between them. In Act Two, Juliet is introduced to Amanda Ehrhardt, Will Pitts, by Giuseppe Verdi society with a regal party theme, setting the stage Laura Prather for the first encounter between these two star- Videographer Requiem crossed lovers. Celebrate One of two corps to turn 50 this season, Pioneer will echo some of its best material 2011 REPERTOIRE from past shows with Celebrate. The corps will set the mood by marching onto the field Four Scottish Dances to Herman Hupfield’s “As Time Goes By” before kicking off the main production with “Four Scottish by Malcolm Arnold Dances,” by Malcolm Arnold, which evokes the sound of bagpipes and Scottish country life. Next up Second Suite is “Song Without Words, I’ll Love My Love,” a soft in F for Military Band ballad taken from Gustav Holst’s Second Suite In F for Military Band. The majestic Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Holst (From The New World) by Antonin Dvor˘ák will hark back to Pioneer shows from the 1960s before the Symphony No. 9 corps wraps things up with a full-ensemble perfor- (From the New World) mance of “As Time Goes By.” Careful listeners and long-time fans will also notice strains of other old by Antonin Dvor˘ák favorites woven into fabric of the show, and when possible, Pioneer will troop the stands with its As Time Goes By theme song, “The Garry Owen March.” by Herman Hupfield 102 2011 DCI Souvenir Yearbook

Cook often showed up at contests in costumes reflecting the theme of Star’s show. He made significant financial contributions to DCI, as well. BOB LENDMAN • Former Regiment and Blue Stars Director Longtime corps director and contest volunteer Bob Lendman passed away this spring after a motorcycle accident. Lendman helped turn Phantom Regiment into a powerhouse, worked with Blue Stars and Star of Indiana and, most recently, served as part of DCI’s event staff. “May he be remembered for all the good things he brought forth during his lifetime of service to the drum corps activity he loved so dearly,” says DCI Executive Director Dan Acheson. 145
