For these corps, various factors make DCI membership an unrealistic goal at this stage in their development. They may be too young, too new, too inexperienced, or too small to challenge the \"heavies.\" Yet DCI realizes that, in order to reach their future pinnacles of success, these corps need chal- lenge and recognition to spur their growth. Fans Some fans are ready for the weather ... or ready for the sandman . . . and some are absent, but still remembered.
Fans can even be instructors . . . or members of rival corps or your own corps mascot. 63
Fans Fans can be lonely . ------- - . ,___ - - .. . - ---·-- - - or part of a crowd. The fans . . . whatever their characteristics, they are essential to this crazy, wonderful activity known as drum corps. Night after night, they pay their admissions to support shows in cities and hamlets coast to coast. Night after night, they urge the corps to higher levels of perfection and entertainment with their applause. We call them \"drum corps nuts,\" but we use the term fondly and we dedicate this book to them-for without the support they give in so many ways, the show would not go on. 64
