HALL OF FAME Drum Corps International is proud to welcome two new members into the DCI Hall of Fame during the 2018 World Championships in Indianapolis. JIM COATES Executive Director, Carolina Crown THE GROUP’S FIRST-EVER World Class title may be his marquee moment, but that 2013 Championship is just one of the achievements that have marked the career of Carolina Crown executive director Jim Coates. Starting out as a visual staff member at Crossmen, Coates rose through the ranks to assume the directorship in 1994. At the time, many questioned whether the group could survive. Coates not only kept it viable, but in less than a decade, he built Crossmen into one of marching music’s strongest organizations. In 2003, Coates moved to Crown as program director. Since he took over as executive director in 2010, the group’s consistency on the field has been matched by an innovative approach to making the organization financially sound. “Jim’s steady hand and unwavering commitment have been the crux of Crown’s rise to perennial contender,” says percus- sion director Thom Hannum (HoF 2001). Coates’ achievements both on and off the field have drawn praise from peers and competitors alike. “Jim has instilled the core values of integrity, commitment and excellence in thousands of young people,” says the Blue Devils’ David Gibbs (HoF 2002). Bluecoats executive direc- tor Davis Glasgow adds, “Now that Crown has reached the mountain top, Jim has shown the leadership to keep them there.” KEN TURNER DCI Chief Judge and Judge Administrator FROM THE MUSIC CLASSROOMS of Johnson City, New York, to the stadiums of DCI competition, Ken Turner has been an iconic instructor, adjudicator, and arts advocate for more than five decades. He’s served the DCI community as Chief Judge, Judge Administrator, Brass Caption Chairman, and in those positions helped reshape the way performances are judged. “Ken is the gold standard,” says Charles A. Poole, Jr. (HoF, 1998). Turner joined New York’s Apalachin Grenadiers in 1959, where he later became a brass instructor and arranger. Over the ensuing years, he served in similar capacities with a number of drum corps groups while helping to build a nationally recognized program as director of fine arts for the Johnson City school system. Turner’s educational approach also informed his work as a DCI judge. His commentary and evaluation always helped us to get better,” says Hall of Fame arranger and instructor Jim Prime, Jr. According to fellow judge Jeff Mitchell, Turner’s leadership helped reform—and transform—the way DCI performances were evaluated and scored. “Ken impressed upon everyone that judging drum corps was about the performers on the field—not the uniform, reputation, or fame of the design team.” 136 2018 Souvenir Yearbook
