Wesiern Corps Blue Dewils How do you become a Blue Devil? You can do it like Cassius Carter, 19, of Lovington, NM, who is in his first year of marching with the Concord, California, Blue Crew. \"When I was in high school I saw the Blue Devils on TV. Then when I got to college, some guys told me about them. I applied for the corps, auditioned by tape, and got a call from Wayne Downey to tell me I was a Blue Devil. Wes1ern Corps Troopers Jim Jones had a dream in 1957. From a small prairie town in Wyoming, he wanted to create a drum and bugle corps that would someday make the finals of the American Legion National Cham- pionships. What he created was the Troopers of Casper, Wyoming, and as everyone knows, they've done a whole lot more than just make finals. Jim's drum corps experience dates back to 1933, when he went to a Legion convention with his mother and saw his first corps. \"It was a unique, beautiful sound; it was pageantry. I said, 'I like that!' \" From then on, he was involved in everything from small parade corps to military corps. Finally, in '57, he founded the Troopers. \"I had a goal that we would make Legion finals. I never figured we'd win the championship.\" The first time the Troopers went to Legion in Denver, in 1961, they stunned the drum corps world by placing fourth. From then on, the corps climbed, becoming more and more popular with crowds every- where. Finally, in 1966, the Troopers picked up their first national title, the VFW championship. Jones smiles. \"The first time you win a big title, the anticipation is greater than the realization. It's nice to win, but trying to win is the name of the game.\" That's not just hot air, either. Jones really believes it, and that's what he tells the Troopers. Jones is like a father to the kids, taking an active interest in their lives. It's his Jones' talk isn't idle. Nidwes1ern Corps Phancom Rea•menc The Phantom Regiment of Rock- ford, Illinois, is really serious about this. They are going to perform the ballet Spartacus, and they are going to do it right. In fact, it's almost as if they consider 1981 a warm-up for 1982. In 1982, the Phantom Regiment hired as consultants the head of the theater costuming department at State University of New York and a Broadway choreographer. And what they've done is something to see. The color guard will carry the story, with the corps playing bit parts (the crowd in some scenes) and big parts (the coliseum in another). Spartacus is a hero of the Thracians, whom the Romans over- ran in 72 BC. He is brought to Rome as a slave and forced to fight as a gladiator. Surviving that, he or- ganizes his fellow slaves into a revolt to overthrow the Romans. He loses; the Romans crucify him and the other slaves. But in death, Spartacus triumphs as a hero of endurance and the fight for freedom. It's hard enough to do on a stage, and nearly impossible on a drum corps field. But the staff and kids of the Regiment are adamant- not only can it work, it can win. Scott Newborn was called in to choreograph. \"We want a purpose for the color guard. Doing a ballet set before Christ, you can't very well carry rifles, and there has to be more than flags.\" So Newborn is writing dance and movement to help the guard tell the complex story. \"I just got pictures in my mind and staged them. If you say 'Picture a party scene,' you know how it should look. I did the same for Spartacus. In the carnival scene, I had to create that atmosphere, complete with all the colors and Cesario fills that role. Cesario says corps before. Scott Newborn is dancing. In the battle, I had to stage the decision to keep the red capes excited. \"I think this is a natural the violence and sharp movements.\" and purple flags created the color evolution of drum corps,\" he claims. Scott's hardest job has been to scheme. Red represents the Romans; Phantom knows it's taking a work within the image of the purple is the rebels. When you see a chance with this. Souihern Corps Spiri1 of A11an1a Atlanta, Georgia, is a city with a lot of spirit. That spirit has taken many forms during 1982. In January, it was the spirit of the people that helped to pull the city together during its worst winter storm in years. In March, the spirit thrived in mid-Atlanta as citizens celebrated where the South's \"international city\" began. In April, the spirit shifted to baseball, as the Braves broke a century-long record by winning their first 13 games of the season. And now, the spirit of Atlanta \" has turned baby blue and unleashed one of North America's best drum corps, the Spirit of Atlanta. The 1982 edition of Spirit is out to show the world what a world-class city Atlanta really is. Like the city it represents, the Spirit of Atlanta is updating its image, its style, and its brand of entertainment. Though the corps has been in DCl's top 12 for four years, the only backward look it will take is a return to the familiar baby-blue uniforms with the abstract \"A\" on the jackets. Otherwise, the Spirit of Atlanta is looking forward to a new, more contemporary approach. The corps' emotionally powerful horn line and technically strong drum line will be bolstered by a more unified, total visual presentation and a larger, more sophisticated color guard. Perhaps the most significant change, though, will be in Spirit's repertoire. To detect the difference, one must remember back to the corps' beginnings, not so many years ago. The tunes that established its identity then were those with a real \"grits and gravy\" sound-Sweet Georgia Brown, Georgia on My Mind, Old Man River. You could practically hear the dew dripping off the magnolias-and just like grits and gravy, the fans ate it up. But a steady diet of grits and gravy can get old, and Spirit has decided the time has come to show that the corps, like its home city, has varied tastes and capabilities. So, the traditional \"down home swing\" has been replaced by a contemporary Southern mixture of old tunes and new harmonies. Oh, they haven't forgotten their roots! Georgia may not be on their minds this year, but the corps' traditional wall of sound will remind 26

Les Corps du Sud you just where they've come from as they open the show with You Are My Sunshine. A lot of jazz and a couple of gospel tunes enhance the \"new South\" image. The corps, like the town, is out to prove they can go beyond their Georgia heritage without forgetting all it's done for them. One instructor summed it up: \"Our total coordination of the show will be a continuation of the year- long spirit that is revitalizing Atlanta.\" Atlanta can be proud; its new spirit shines through in the new Spirit of Atlanta. 1981 Placing: 9th. 1981 Repertoire: Georgia on My Mind I Old Man River / Blue Skies / Devil Went Down to Georgia I Let It Be Me. 1982 Repertoire: You Are My Sunshine / Oh Happy Day / Rainmaker / Blue Rondo a la Turk / We Are the Reason. Sou1hern Corps Suncoas1 Sound Those who think the South is a little laid back and languid haven't heard the crisp excitement of DCl's newest Southern member. Suncoast Sound burst out of Tampa Bay, Florida, with a show as refreshing as a coastal breeze. One of the fastest-rising corps around, Sun coast Sound has progressed from 40th to 21st in its three years of DC/ competition. At that rate, they'll run out of places in two more years! 1981 Placing: 21st. 1982 Repertoire: You Are My Sunshine I Lullaby of the Leaves / Musicmajic I Rainmaker I Greatest Love of All. Easiern Corps Crossmen \"We really live charmed lives here in the Crossmen,\" was a comment heard recently. The tone was sarcastic. The Crossmen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have become very popular through the years, but the road to fame has been anything but easy for the corps. The Crossmen, you might say, have literally pulled themselves up by their bootstraps. One of the people who've been through it all, besides corps director Harold Robinson, is 21-year-old Roni Zepp, a color guard member from Delaware City, PA. She has been in drum corps 11 years, and in the Crossmen since their beginning 8 years ago. Roni was a member of the 504 Hornets, which merged with the Keystone Regiment to form the Crossmen. \"At first I was very skeptical about the merger. The two corps were rivals. I didn't think it would work. But all the experienced people said it would be great- a chance to get into DCI.\" She remembers the first wonder- ful rehearsal, with 40 flags, 20 rifles, and 100 horns, but it didn't stay that way. The corps might have fallen on its face, had it not been for excellent management. \" The administration pulled to- gether immediately,\" she recalls. \"The staff never let us sit around moaning. They made sure we learned things, and learned them quickly. We were kept very busy.\" From there on, the Crossmen have climbed steadily toward the top, except for two years. Those years were setbacks in one way, but Roni, who has seen it all with the Crossmen, thinks differently. \"The bad times were what really pulled the corps together,\" she claims. \"In '79, at the end of the season, disaster-we didn't make finals. Many people thought the corps would fall apart, but it didn't. We decided never to let it happen again.\" Drum corps has been as espe- cially good experience for Roni. She says it helped her through a very tough period in her life. \"In 1972 our house burned down. That was my first year in corps. We were shipped from relative to relative around the city until things got straightened out. Corps was the only thing I had left. I would cry when rehearsals were

Les Corps de l'Es1 cancelled, I loved it so much. Corps was there when I needed it, and I'll always be there when it needs me.\" Now that Roni is marching her last year in corps, how does she feel? \" I've had my share of disappoint- ments. But the good times and personal fulfillment have more than made up for it. I won't be bitter if I leave without ever having won the DCI Championship. I've never quit after a bad season or a bad performance. There is just some force that keeps me coming back.\" Roni's experience isn't by any means unique, but it is special. It also goes to show that members of the Crossmen don't have to refer to their \"charmed lives\" with sarcasm at all. They really do live charmed lives. 1981 Placing: 8th. 1981 Repertoire: Explosions / Some- thing I Spanish Fantasy / Bustline / Overture from Rocky II. 1982 Repertoire: Artistry Jumps / Shoshana / original composition by Tomy Yachlick / Russian Christmas Music. Easiern Corps Nor1h Siar There's a mythical bird called the Phoenix, a thing of beauty that rises out of ashes and ruin. Like the Phoenix, the North Star from North Shore, Massachusetts, has overcome trouble time and again to delight fans. Beginning with a merger of several small corps, the North Star first struggled with internal rivalries. Overcoming that, the corps was on its way up when a fire destroyed its uniforms and equipment. But the fledgeling corps persevered, ranking in the top 12 from 1978 to 1980. In 1981, the North Star found itself out of the top 12, by a mere two-tenths of a point, despite an excellent drum score. But, like the Phoenix, the North Star will rise once more. 1981 Placing: 13th. 1982 Repertoire: Killion I Pontieo I Saber Dance. Director: James P. O'Brien, 106 Burrill St., Swampscott, MA 01907. Defenders When the Defenders placed 52nd and 54th at DC/ in 1974 and '75, nobody expected that they would ever be members of DC/. Indeed, the next two years they were absent, and most people never expected to see them again. But with a 33rd-place reappearance in 1978, the Rockland, Massachusetts, corps began its steady climb, making the top 25 in both '80and '81. With their neat military appearance and enjoyable rep, they are slated by many to move even higher. 1981 Placing: 17th. 1982 Repertoire: Contemporary Expressions of Spain / Medieval Overture / Theme Without a Movie I It I Could Reach You. Les Corps de l'Es1: Awan1 Garde \"Showmanship\" could be the middle name of the Avant Garde. The Saratoga Springs, New York, corps is becoming an old hand at DC/ membership, having been in the top 25 for the past three years. Rumor has it that a new surprise awaits Avant Garde fans this year, as the corps has traded in the familiar green uniform for a snappy yellow and black outfit, a la the former Seneca Optimists, that will knock your socks off. 1981 Placing: 23rd. 1982 Repertoire: And the Angels Sing/ Pontieo / That Cat Is High / I Sing the Body Electric. Director: Jeff Perkins, 4 Congress Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Bosion Crusaders For years we've all applied the old cliches-small but mighty, quality not quantity- to the Boston Crusaders, and 1981 was no exception. As it has every year since 1976, this Massachusetts powerhouse, little in numbers but a giant in the hearts of the fans, again made the top 25. This year, however, we may have to drop these time-worn cliches, as Boston has a larger corps as well as some mighty big plans-a trip to Europe to perform and compete in the early summer! There could be no finer representative of American corps in England, Holland, and France. 1981 Placing: 25th. 1982 Repertoire: Samson and Delilah I Threshold I Kitty's Back I Kid Charlemagne / While My Guitar Gently Weeps I Conquest. Director: Mark Beliveau, P.O. Box 94, Waban, MA 02168.

Some also have sabre lines, \"hoop\" or \"bedpost\" lines. To our knowledge, only one has ever used a \"chair\" line in DC/ competition, and their originality was rewarded with the DC/ all-girl title. Les Chatelaines, the only French-speaking Canadian corps to win a DC/ title, did it for the second time in 1981, repeating their 1978 victory in all-girl competition. Les Chatelaines won the hearts of fans with their unique uniforms, their intricate maneuvers with the white folding chairs, and the over-size hats they used during a portion of the show. A solid musical program, combined with their revamped appearance and interesting drill, made them popular all-girl champs. Local spectators were justifiably proud of the Laval, Quebec, corps' victory in Montreal. 1981 Placing: All-Girl Champions. 1982 Repertoire: Farandole I Jubilation I Mack the Knife / Poili Rhythmie I If.
