The Regional Championships Drums along the Rockies The spectacular Rocky Mountains again served as the awesome backdrop for DCI's \"maverick\" regional show - the one without a regional name, the one that is an invitational, and one of only two without prelims. Drums along the Rockies has, despite these differ- ences, nicely replaced DCI West, at least temporarily, and become an institution in Denver's Mile High Stadium. Again this year, Doris Wentland chaired the July 26 event, co-sponsored by DCI and Denver's KBTV (Channel 9). This year, indeed, Drums along the Rockies was a very regional event; most of the participating corps were from the West Coast, with the Sky Ryders of Kansas being the easternmost corps in competition. Scores left little doubt about the identity of the mid-season Western champion. To nobody's surprise, the Blue Devils easily outdistanced their arch-rivals, the Santa Clara Vanguard, by six points, winning every major caption. The rest of the best of the West trailed the leaders by 15 points or more, making it fairly evident that the West's top contender for the World Champion- ship had already emerged. The Regional Championships BC/ East • I Allentown, Pennsylvania ... a place that has joined Whitewater, Wisconsin, in the hearts of drum corps fans everywhere. Just say \"Allentown,\" and the pulse beats a little faster. The Allentown School District Stadium has seen more good drum corps, consistently, than nearly any other spot in the nation. The DCI East Championships on August 8 and 9, chaired by Fred Wipdish and co-sponsored by Burger King, upheld the tradition proudly. A Class \"A''-All-Girl Champion- ship, newly instituted at DCI East this year, opened the festivities. The lovely and popular Ventures added another regional championship to their growing collection, scoring 60.85 to top a large field of 18 class \"A\" and ail-girl entrants. A new event, the \"Parade of Cham- pions,\" was sponsored by the Allentown Center City Association. Winners of the parade trophy were New Jersey's Emerald Grenadears. Excitement mounted as the open- class prelims began, for everyone knew that one of the 25 competing corps here Santa Clara Vanguard, and the Madison in Allentown would eventually win the Scouts to earn third place among a world title in Birmingham. The World Championships The Garfield Cadets provided another example of a late-season miracle. This corps has always pleased crowds with its musical selections and showmanship; now, Garfield's execution is beginning to equal its audience appeal. Corps fans applauded the return of the Cadets to the top twelve, in tenth place (76.45). Oh, that revolving drill! Perhaps no one picked the Cavaliers to win the DCI title, but almost everyone picked them among their favorites to watch. A vastly improved corps, the Cavies hit the audience hard right off the line and never let up. Their efforts earned ninth place (77.40). In 1979, even the appearance of Superman could not boost the Crossmen into the top twelve. But in 1980, this corps set out to show that their exit from the elite dozen had been a mistake. A well-rounded show and an excellent drum score helped the Crossmen earn eighth place (83.60) and a well-deserved \"welcome back\" from the fans. Legion Field's upper deck provided many with their first opportunity to see the intricate celestial patterns of the Santa Clara Vanguard's drill from a high vantage point. Though, tJ!e Van- gard slipped below the top three for the first time in DCI's history, its seventh- place performance (85.60) was a marvel of total-show coordination and sophisti- cation. As usual, the fans went wild over the Madison Scouts, whose horn line and color guard are perennial favorites. For 1980, the Scouts had an added treat, as the brass players all became color guard during the percussion solo. Despite their powerful horn performance and crowd appeal, Madison remained in sixth place (87.05). The Phantom Regiment, long-hair of the drum corps scene, retained an exclusively classical repertoire in 19_80, but failed to retain the second-place ranking they had held for several years. Nonetheless, the Regiment thrilled the crowd with a powerful show, featuring a fine drill and color guard. Phantom won the M&M trophy, but finished fifth over-all (88.45). The zany Bridgemen always have a few surprises up their sleeves, and this year one of the best surprises was the excellence with which they executed their shenanigans. As the \"Bayonne Bananas\" romped through a circus, a Civil War, and even an impromptu football game after the final gun, their drum section earned the percussion trophy and the corps advanced to third place (90.05). For the big brass sound of the only Southern finalist, Spirit of Atlanta, the South arose again - in one standing 60
les Champiannats Mandeaux ovation after another. Spirit's percussion section, not to be outdone, tied for first in drum execution. Nevertheless, the local favorites slipped one notch from prelims, to finish in fourth place (89.80) - but less than a point out of first. The 27th Lancers, hope of the East, went all-out to snatch the title away from the West Coast. A brilliant drill, well executed, showcased strength and excellence throughout the corps. The 27th Lancers won the high GE trophy and the best color guard award, but The trophies were handed out; the were unable to transfer the big trophy to champions received the salutes of the the East Coast, as they had to settle for other corps and played their victory second place (90.25). concert; old friends from corps thou- What more can be said about the sands of miles apart hugged a tearful awesome Blue Devils?
