Ventures The Canadian provinces have fielded particularly good all-girl corps in recent years, and the Ventures of Kitchener, Ontario, proved that 1979 was no exception. Intensive practice helped the ladies from north of the border finish on top in the DC/ Al/- Cir/ prelims. However, they ended_ up in second place at the finals for the second consecutive year, despite their top score in percussion and general effect. The Ventures are one of only two all-girl corps who have competed in all five DC/ All-Girl Championships since the contest's inception. 1979 Placing: 2nd in All-Girl Cham- pionship. The many entertaining Canadian corps include the 1st Canadian Regiment, Edmonton, Alberta (left); the Dutchboy Cadets, Kitchener/ Water- loo, Ontario (below, left); and the all-girl Bandettes, Saulte Ste. Marie, Ontario (below).

Although \"Drums Along the Rockies\" was not, strictly speaking, a regional championship, it served as a very nice substitute indeed since there was no DCI West in 1979. Denver's Mile High Stadium, site of former DCI Championships, provided the lofty setting for the show. The July 11 event was ably chaired by DCl's Doris Went- land, and jointly sponsored by DCI and KBTV (Channel 9) in Denver. Because this contest was an invita- tional show, with no prelims, excite- ment ran as high as the surrounding landscape when the evening show opened. Spectators were about to take their first look at head-to-head competition between corps from the West, the Midwest, the East, and the South. On this night, as the recap shows, the motto might well have been \" The South will rise again!\" Rise it did, as a powerful Spirit of Atlanta horn line provided the winning margin to squeak by Santa Clara. The Midwestern and Eastern contingents were out of the running, with Madison, the Crossmen, and the North Star close to each other, but disappointingly far behind the two leaders. 53
If ice-cream parlors made their profits by predicting winners, a certain establishment in Ypsilanti, Michigan, would be rich by now with its fea- tu red flavor last Ju ly: Phantom Regi- ment Ripple! In fact, the Regiment rippled effortlessly across the field, easily defending its DCI North cham- pionship against 19 contenders. The real contest in Ypsilanti's Rynearson Stadium was for second place; the Bridgemen held their pre- lim superiority over the Guardsmen by the narrowest of margins to remain in the second spot during fi nals. In fact, the placing of all ten finalists in the championship was identical to their placing in prelims- a rarity in drum corps! Once again, the Ju ly 12 event was chaired by the experienced and dedi- cated Barbara Weiss, and sponsored by the Ypsilanti Area Convention and I Visitor Bureau in conjunction with DCI. And once again, it was well attended and superbly well run and promoted. DCI NORTH - Ypsilanti, Michigan - July 12, 1979 M&M Drums Brass General Effect #1 Cre. #2 Cre. Avg. #1 #2 Avg. On July 14, just two days after their victory at DCI North, the Phan- tom Regiment turned up to try for a double play in their own back yard. The occasion was DCI Midwest, in Whitewater, Wisconsin-site of the very first DCI contest back in '72. This time, Phantom had to defend its '78 regional title against a total of 23 contenders. As is traditional for Whitewater, an enormous crowd showed up for prelims. Most were Midwestern fans who were shocked to see the pre- liminary results. Spirit of Atlanta was ahead of Phantom! The Guardsmen beat the Madison Scouts by virtue of penalties! The North Star in fifth place was no surprise, but then, there were the Blue Stars, ahead of the Crossmen, Bridgemen, and 27th Lancers! The recaps fo r the finals tell the tale. Nearly everyone switched places, and some switched several places. Phantom retained its title. Madison beat the Guardsmen. The North Star, Crossmen, 27th, and Bridgemen all beat the Blue Stars (the latter three less than a point apart). DCI and Madison's WMTV (Channel 15) had co-sponsored a show that left the fans happy, sunburned, and perplexed about the \" real\" ranking of the corps. Now, those confused fans would just have to wait for the truth, as the corps headed for home to recover from \" first tour\" and to make the changes that would hopefully give them a more conclusive edge on the all- important second tour, culminating in the DCI Championship.
