Read the back cover blurb to your students. • Ask: Have you built a den or fort in your house? What did you use? During reading • If your students get stuck on a word, remind them to sound it out and then blend the sounds to read the word: p-er-ch, perch. • If they are still stuck, show them how to read the word. • Enjoy looking at the pictures together. Pause to talk about the story. After reading • Ask: Did the child build the fort outdoors? Why not? Who would you like to join you in a homemade fort? Can you spot the parrot on 6 pages? 3
