What’s Fair? by Lynnette Werner illustrated by Heather Castles
Quinn and Hasan had been best friends since kindergarten. They both liked to swim, play hockey, and build things. Most of all, Quinn and Hasan both LOVED cookies! The only problem was they had trouble sharing sometimes. 2
“You have more cookies than I do,” complained Quinn. “We need to share them fairly.” Hasan looked at his 6 cookies and at Quinn’s 4 cookies. “Hmmm,” he said. “I could eat two of my cookies, then we’d both have 4.” 3
“I’m not falling for that!” cried Quinn. “It was worth a try,” Hasan laughed. “Okay. If I give you one of my cookies, then we’ll both have 5.” Quinn smiled. “That’s better.” 4
Sometimes Quinn and Hasan had trouble sharing at school, too. “Hey, you have more pencil crayons than me,” Hasan noticed. “No, I don’t,” said Quinn. “I only have 7.” “That’s 2 more than I have!” cried Hasan. 5
Ms. Fairweather came over and said, “How can you divide the pencil crayons evenly?” Quinn put all the pencil crayons in a pile. Then she gave one to Hasan and kept one for herself. She gave out the pencil crayons until they were all gone. 6
Hasan counted his pile and Quinn counted hers. They found they had the same amount. “We shared them evenly!” Quinn said happily. “Quinn, why don’t we just put them all in the middle and share?” suggested Hasan. “Now you think of that,” sighed Quinn. 7
The next day, Ms. Fairweather told the class they could pick a celebration to research. First, they had to divide into groups. She said, “There are 20 of you. How can we divide the class evenly into 5 groups?” 8
The class talked over the problem. Once they were finished, they shared their answer. “4,” they said. Then, they split into groups. Quinn and Hasan were with their friends Sarah and Ben. 9
For their celebration, Sarah suggested Chanukah. “It’s Chanukah next week. If you want to come over, I can show you how we celebrate. We can take some photos and ask my family questions.” Everyone agreed that was a great idea. 10
A week later, Quinn, Hasan, and Ben arrived at Sarah’s house. It was covered with beautiful blue and white decorations. “Come on. I’ll teach you how to play dreidel while we wait for the rest of my family,” said Sarah. 11
“We play this during the eight nights of Chanukah,” explained Sarah. “Mom bought me 28 chocolate coins to play with. We all start off with the same amount.” 12
“I think we all get 5 each,” said Hasan. 13 “I don’t think that’s right,” Quinn frowned. “Let’s count by 5’s and see if we get to 28.” The children counted, pointing to each person: “5, 10, 15, 20.”
“That’s not right. But at least we know it’s more than 5 coins each!” said Hasan excitedly. “Yeah, there is 8 more than 20 in 28. So let’s each take 5. Then we can share the remaining 8,” suggested Quinn. Ben gave 5 coins to each person. 14
“Looks like we get two more each. So we’ll all have 7 coins to play with. Let’s spin the dreidel!” Sarah cried. At the end of the game, Ben had 5 pieces, Quinn had 3, Hasan had 14, and Sarah had 6. 15
“I won! I get to eat 14 pieces of chocolate,” cheered Hasan. Hasan stopped and looked at his friends’ faces. He smiled, and then handed out his coins so everyone had the same amount. On their way home, Quinn still had one chocolate coin left. As she got out of the car, she gave it to Hasan. “Thanks for being a fair friend.” 16
