Read the back cover blurb to your students. • Ask: What do you think will happen in this story? During reading • If your students get stuck on a word, remind them to sound it out and then blend the sounds to read the word: ch-i-ck, chick. • If they are still stuck, show them how to read the word. • Enjoy looking at the pictures together. Pause to talk about the story. After reading • Ask: Why did the boy want to keep checking the chicks? (to see if more had hatched) • Ask: How did the boy feel at the end? Would it be fun to have hens and chicks? Can you spot the duck on 6 pages? 3
