The UAE is incredibly diverse. It offers so much in terms of culture to anyone wanting to explore Emirati tradition. And that’s what makes this country unique and desirable for many. His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE declared 2019 as the Year of Tolerance. The announcement was made at the World Tolerance Summit 2018 in the presence of various national and regional dignitaries. WHAT IS THE YEAR OF TOLERANCE? The purpose of the Year of Tolerance 2019 is to raise the UAE’s prominence as a global frontrunner for acceptance and coexistence. “We want the UAE to be the global reference point for a tolerant culture, via its policies, laws and practices,” H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid This theme of tolerance is a homage to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s legacy, stature and principles of forbearance, open-mindedness and concomi- tance. In simple words, the Year of Tolerance means to inspire and promote religious, racial, communal, cultural, sectarian and political tolerance within the country. The UAE plans to achieve this through comprehensive laws, policies and practices directed towards creat- ing an all-encompassing tolerant culture. THE PILLARS OF YEAR OF TOLERANCE UAE There are seven main pillars of this year’s theme of tolerance. The UAE government aims to deepen the values of tolerance among its people through a speciic focus on fostering: • Tolerance in the community, by encouraging greater acceptance among family members and creating a safe environment for different cultures to dwell together in har- mony. • Tolerance in education through cultivating the important values of tolerance into young minds by incorporating them in the curriculum. • Tolerance at workplaces via educational programs that instill the values of cohesive, safe and tolerant workplaces across the country. • Tolerance in culture by celebrating this 200-nationalities strong multicultural land with programs, events and promoted art to build stronger communities. • Tolerance in legislation through policy development aimed at enhancing the sus- tainability of mutual dialogue, tolerance and multiculturalism. • Tolerance in media by introducing targeted media projects and campaigns for rein- forced values of coexistence. • The UAE model of tolerance with the help of projects and initiatives that uplift the country as the global capital for tolerance.

Messages N.K.RAMACHANDRAN CHAIRMAN BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN MIDDLE EAST From the Chair 50, 40, 30, or even 20 years back – children were focused on age appropriate matters – be it their education and cultural activities in school, responsibilities at home or the social community they lived in. Character building was the essence in school and at home. Individual satisfaction and personal needs were not given importance or priorities. The change from then to now is visible at every home – The attitude of parents and children at every home – then and now is far different from the way it was back then. Change is necessary and even mandated as generations pass. But we as a school believe that culture and values should remain the same and be the solid foundation of every home for generations. During the last 15 years of my 24/7 involvement with children, parents and teachers, I am really surprised or in fact more saddened to see the current level of attitude of children from class 3 onwards. May be I belong to an older generation or still continue with the old school of thoughts. But I believe many of the children are diverting from their proper path, and chasing things that are not age appropriate, and not at all necessary in these years of their life. This will ultimately lead to more children being trapped in a whirlwind of activities and emotions that divert their attention and focus from matters most essential to set their future on track. Many of the children are in the trap. I am very sure that as a parent you belong to one of these parent groups – either the ‘trapped’, or the possibly ‘going to be trapped’. During several interactions with parents it has come to my notice that there are a number of instances where children lack respect, cases where they retort and answer back, and yell at, when even the slightest or basic questions are asked at home, but the very same child was obedient and mostly well-behaved at school. Yesterday I heard from my senior leadership team that grade 8 children have started answering back to Principal and Vice Principals. In the last couple of months, I have seen lots of such unhealthy incidents which warrant parents’ immediate intervention. I am sure many parents are experiencing the same, or similar situations at home, as well. Our children grow physically and they may be aware of many things not necessary for their age because of increased social media presence – but their emotional responsibility level is still that of a child and not of an adult. They need to understand the impact of their words and actions, and take responsibility for the effects of the same. At Bhavans we believe in character building which is the foundation of any child for a better tomorrow, better future. Education will follow automatically. Parents are requested to communicate with the senior management team of the school as and when necessary to discuss the progress of their children in all mat- ters of their growth or when you feel there is a visible change in child’s attitude and behavior. Let us work together for a better tomorrow. Trust us, we are with you. Middle East. Messages SOORAJ .K RAMACHANDRAN VICE-CHAIRMAN BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN MIDDLE EAST Dear Students / Teachers / Parents, It gives me immense pleasure to contribute to the First issue of our Annual School Magazine. The school magazine outlines the progress that the school has made during the academic year and recapitulates all events, showcasing the various activities of the school. This year has passed swiftly in a blur of achieve- ments and accomplishments, and I would like to congratulate and extend my best wishes to all those who have worked hard to ensure that the magazine remains a treasure trove of memories. To me, the magazine will always be an event-illed journal, chronicling the exciting year that will be cherished by our students in the years to come. Through this magazine, I would like to greet all the stake holders of our school family. As always, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our teachers and students for our success during the year. The good work done by our team of teachers and students speaks highly of the excellent quality of education that is being imparted by our school. It is also a testimony to all the hard work that is put in by our teachers, day in and day out. I am most pleased to see progress by our students, as new batch- es will exceed previous batches, armed with an unstoppable motivation to excel. Our institution has always created an environment and ambience that fosters learning, as it provides the students with opportunities to explore and grow, through situations that challenge them to identify their strengths and reinforce them. In this regard, the words of the great scientist Albert Einstein are memorable when he said, “I don’t teach my children. I create conditions for them to Learn”. BHAVANS prides itself on the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual development of its students. We strive to impart knowledge that encompasses the prescribed syllabi of the institution as well as that of the world that lies beyond the classroom. It is our endeavor to shape well-rounded personalities that will contribute positively to the society. To this end of holistic education, we strongly believe that educational excellence cannot be achieved solely through book knowledge. At our school, it has been our aim to provide the right environment for young minds to take wings. We shape them for a globalized future, where changes take place every second and decisions have to be taken on the spot. We prepare them for situations that call upon individuals who can step up and become leaders. Based on this premise, we believe in empowering our children so as to help them become the best they can be. In this regard, BHAVANS owes much to its dynamic leadership whose untiring efforts have resulted in the overall development of the School. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all our staff members for their dedication and hard work that has ensured that our lag is always lying high. Kudos to the entire Bhavans team for their commendable efforts! I believe, that in the years to come, armed with commitment and perseverance in the pursuit of knowledge and education, Bhavans will continue to prosper. I pray that the Almighty God continues to bless this school, including the students, parents, and all those associated with this institution. I Thank You Once Again. DHRISHTI 2019 - 20 15
Messages DIVYA RAJESH RAMACHANDRAN DIRECTOR BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN MIDDLE EAST One thing that we always wonder as a parent is are we doing right for our child? Are we letting them grow into responsible future citizens? I would like to share some interesting words on parenting goals by Khalil Gibran where he talked of our children not being our children – but sons and daughters of life’s longing – He said and I quote “ You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls' dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.” The best thing we can do for our children is to allow them to do things for themselves, allow them to be strong, allow them to experience life on their own terms, give them the conidence to be independent with the assurance that you will be there to hold them – should they lose their way or should they fall. Making mistakes is the best teacher ever – do not give them targets of perfection - let them be better people, let them believe more in themselves. You give your children a wonderful ground to grow up to be the kind of human beings they are destined to be. No book is going to teach what you want to know about how to do it right and neither is someone’s lecture going to practically guide you. Be present in their lives – There is no replacement for the time you give them. “ To be in your children’s memories – you need to be in their lives today \". Having children is a huge responsibility. As with any responsibility, comes huge risk – And as with any risk you have to take a giant leap of faith and do what you need to do in the best possible way. We often talk of toughening up our child to face a cruel and heartless world. Alternatively, we could think of raising a generation that would go out and make the world a little less cruel and a little less heartless. So, if your child goes out into the world being good, kind, ethical , compassionate, responsible human beings, who are comfortable in the skin of the person they have become and most importantly happy and content – then know that you have done justice to your responsibility. And I believe this as a person , a mother and the director of this wonderful institution. And this belief makes me determined to ensure that we make our next generation more aware, empathetic, practical and vocal enough to make their voices heard to bring a change. “Parenthood…it’s about guiding the next generation and forgiving the last.” Wishing all my children and their families all the very best. The coming year is going to prove to be very challenging, but we have faith that we will together be able to withstand any tough times and dificult situations and convert every challenge into an opportunity for learning. Messages DR.K.T.NANDAKUMAR PRINCIPAL BPWS-AL AIN I am really proud to learn that the irst issue of ‘Dhrishti’ - the Annual Magazine of our school is going to be published. BPWS started functioning on 21st April 2019 and we have completed our irst Academic Year. It is time for us to stop for a while and relect ourselves. Academic year 2019-20 was our irst year and we could have remarkable achievements during this year in academics as well as extra-curricular activities. Academically, we could ensure better quality education which motivated and empowered our student community. Within a year of our exis- tence, we could become one of the most sought-after school in the region of Al Ain. At our school, education is not just the amount of information that is put into a child’s brain. Our education system is the one that caters the individual needs of our students. We want all our students to achieve their full potential. Our task is to make it possible, and our mission is to provide a platform for the same. Success for all students is ensured at our school by the delivery of an enriching, child centred, balanced and structured curriculum and a whole school focus on student welfare that focuses on the positive recognition of student achievements. Teachers at BPWS are highly qualiied and experienced educators who are committed to supporting each student’s learning experience through quality instruction and guidance that addresses the needs of the individual child. Teachers work to provide students with differentiated support that address each student’s speciic needs both academically and socially. We do also give high priority for our Student’s safety. School also initiates the activities that actively promote safe and healthy lifestyle and contribute effectively to sustainability and conservation of our environ- ment. The school’s annual magazine is the relection of the creativity of our talented students, the activities, events, and programs conducted during the irst year of the operation of our school. It is an excellent platform for them to showcase their talents. It is also considered as the historical document of the school and we are really happy to release it in the irst year itself. It gives us immense joy and satisfaction to publish such a school magazine. A lot of effort has gone into the making of this issue. Messages Ms.Priya Paul CHIEF EDITOR BPWS-AL AIN “Good leaders create a vision, articulate a vision and passionately own a vision and turn it into a reality” - Jack Welch. Very few have fully realized the wealth of Sympathy, kindness and generosity hidden in the soul of a child. The effect of every educator should be to unlock the treasure and Bhavans Pearl is an excellent example where everyone strives indefatigably for this. I am overwhelmed to be a part of the school magazine. It was a unique experience for me. I am indebted to the principal for being instrumental in his publication. I am thankful to the student editors who had extend- ed full cooperation right from the beginning. The time spent by the students in school is the most memorable and special moments in their life. Some students these days have developed the attitude of “KNOW ALL”. They must remember that school is their second home and teacher is their second mother. In this regard, I would like to express my feelings about the position of a teacher in terms of all students. i.e Teacher student relationship. If teachers are taps with a fund of knowledge (water in the water tank), the students are like containers placed just under the tap, in order to quench their thirst for knowledge. If the tap is open, and the container is away from the tap, the knowledge can’t be gained (When the student is away from the class). If the tap is open and the container has a hole (When the student is distracted) the knowledge imparted goes waste. If the tap is open and the container is illed and overlowing i.e Knowledge gained in class is not revised or practiced at home, a student can excel. If the tap is open and there is no container i.e the recipient of knowledge, the situations is quite alarming. Dear children school life plays a pivotal role in learning lesson of life which will enable you to face this fast moving world. I hope that your parents would also agree to this. To keep oneself abreast of all the changes in socio-economic conditions- schooling is must. This is a time of great changes. In education too we see fast changes. The student today is an individual, is a real person with feelings of self-respect, sensitivity, responsibility and compassion. We need to recognize, appreciate, applaud and foster the ine blend of sensibilities in a child – and thus this Edition is to be viewed as a launch pad for the children’s creative urges to blossom naturally. As the saying goes, mind like para- chute works best when opened. This humble initiative is to set the budding minds free allowing them to roam free in the realm of imagination and experience to create a world of beauty in words. This school attains its eminence in the irst place through the achievement of children. This Edition also espouses the School spirit which is built up within the school through the collective actions, thoughts and aspirations. All these, I believe would spur higher growth and enterprise in children. My thanks are due to the Principal, editorial board, students and teachers to have been of immense help in breathing life into these pages. Good Luck. Happy Reading!!!!!! DHRISHTI 2019 - 20 18
