Sultan Asif 4 C **************************************************************** Ameera Dilwali Jan 8 B **************************************************************** Through the Happiest Country in Asia- Travelogue I love the adventure of travel. Ever since I was a child, it was a great pleasure for me to go around distant places on my bicycle. I feel the same today and extremely blessed to feed my passion of travel. My last trip to the great Kingdom of Bhutan was really rejuvenating. Throughout my way to Bhutan, I was eagerly waiting to know what made this country the ‘happiest in this world’. The moment I entered I realised the reason that this country is filled with loving, caring, interesting, inspiring, wonderful and colorful people. Surprisingly enough, the most striking element here is the colour, it is everywhere, from people’s dresses to the exterior of buildings Soon I entered Phuentsholing, the Border town of Bhutan opposite to the Indian town Jaigaon 76
after taking the permit from the immigration office, I missed the online world, and so I enjoyed its scenic and spiritual atmosphere alike. The natural beauty of Bhutan never stops amazing me!Then I spent a good amount of time exploring through its local villages talking with the happiest citizens of the word. There the weather was pretty cold and the wind was below freezing. But thankfully, the skies remained clear and the sun shone bright. n every winding bends of the road there were attractive cautions like ‘be soft on my bends.’In every winding bends of the road there were attractive cautions like ‘be soft on my bends.’ Two hours of riding through cold winding roads brought me to Thimphu, the monasteries were very beautiful to behold, it was quite a surreal feeling to stand on the balcony of the monastery and look at the lovely surroundings, snow-laden mountains, azure waters of Bhutan River, and the lush agricultural land. Then we hitchhiked savouring the green freshness of the countryside and there were apple orchards bordering the road, and the apple trees were bowing down in tune to the rhythm of breeze. Meanwhile we came across a traditional house nestled in the valleys of yellowish rice fields dotted with trees and hemmed in by hills that stretched beyond the horizon. It was extremely comfortable with cozy lounge, warm and beautiful appearance, and there an old Bhutanese grandpa was staring at us with his faint eyes. He then arranged us a rousing reception to his wood panelled house, and we introduced ourselves as the students from Kerala, and enclosed our hidden desire of plucking apples. We were amazed by the manner with which he treated us.Along with his grandchild, he accompanied us to his apple field where the plums, pears and apples in varied shapes and colours welcomed us. We enjoyed the real taste of juicy apples from one tree to another the way butterflies suck nectar from one bud to another. We really forgot our surroundings being lured in the freshness of dewy apples and honey pears. The old man’s grandson and niece played around and giggled observing us from the corner of their eyes as we tried our hands and teeth on the bright, lively apples. We plucked and packed a lot of juicy and unprocessed apples and ate along the way. After all, we gave him the cost of apples, but he politely denied the sum with his toothy smile. Then we drove on relishing the green, sparkling valleys enjoying the distinct and pure air and silence. While we were ascending, we were precisely in the middle of the clouds or sometimes even above them. Yes, Bhutan and Bhutanese are alike....look alluringly elegant both inside and out. Miracle- Reflections Man is born with a heart that beholds multifarious cravings. He ventures round the clock to spend his life trying to satisfy them, but the truth is that it is an incessant list, which even death is impuissant to expunge. Do you believe in miracles? Yes or No the answer be, what can be the apt definition of a miracle? A miracle is habile in filling a life with contentment, elation, redemption, rejuvenation; the ultimate revival of life. It enters like a godsent stranger who knocks the door at the time of a danger or like a hindrance that could stop a bad happening or something that could uplift a man to the top of the world and which adds to a comedy or a happy note. Miracle is the sheer blessing of the Almighty, which is showered on a person, when He feels that a man has reached the zenith for the attainment of his yearnings. It is the real expression of the most ethical deeds performed devoid of expectations, doing the same a man forgets his wants for the fruition of the present purpose. When a man does something placing someone else in need above him, the Almighty blesses the person's life with a boon, which emerges as a miracle. A miracle is a momentous thing which replenishes a person's life with eternal bliss blossomed out of his most revered desire out of th e blue, which is proficient enough in making him feel like a prince from a pauper. Ms. Gayathry Nandanan **************************************************************** Friendship- reflections \"Friends are like passing clouds.\" Friendship is a blessing. Everyone is unique, but to have a true friend is a special thing. He/she who has a true friend is gifted. A person without a friend is like a pond without water. True friends are very rare but a true friend is worthier than thousand friends. A true friend is one who shares his friend’s happiness and sorrows with equal eyes. Friendship is an ocean. It seems that it never ends. It searches for new boundaries. Life is a journey and friends are various temples that we meet in between. The journey never ends it continues in search of new temples... True friendship is a treasure that continues till death. Mohammed Ayaan 1 D ************************************************************************ 79
Syrian Shawarma-Recipe Shawarma is one of the most famous street foods in the Middle East. The roots of this delicious dish go back to the Levant and the Ottoman Empire, when, in 1906, Sadeeq Khabaz left his restaurant job in Bursa and traveled to Damascus to open a shawarma restaurant. Khabaz adapted the recipe, introducing the distinct taste of the Syrian shawarma. Shawarma consists of chicken breast and special spices. The meat is placed on a metal skewer and rotates on a vertical grill. As the meat cooks, thin slices are cut from the skewer with a very long, sword-like knife. The chicken slices are then placed on home- made bread, along with pickled cucumber and a special garlic cream. Learn how to make a delicious chicken shawarma recipe at home using your panini grill. Ingredients: BY 2.5 lbs boneless chicken breast or thighs MR.TAREK SHARIF Marinade Ingredients: (FATHER OF KURT AYMAN 4C) ½ cup lemon juice 80 2 tablespoons tomato sauce 4 tablespoons plain yoghurt 3 tablespoons white vinegar 1 head garlic peeled, crushed 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoons salt or to taste 1 teaspoon Shawarma spices 1 teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon ginger powder optional ½ teaspoon black pepper ¼ teaspoon nutmeg powder
Sandwich Wrap Ingredients 6 loafs pita or tortilla bread 6 teaspoons Garlic Paste Lebanese ½ lb cucumber pickles salty 2 cups French fries Instructions Marinating the chicken: 1. Cut the chicken into thin slices of about ½ inch and place in a marination bowl. 2. To make the marinade, mix all dry and liquid ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend for a couple of minutes. 3. Add the marinate to the chicken bowl mixing well. Cover and let marinate in the fridge overnight. Cooking 1. When ready, grill the marinated chicken on a panini or George Forman grill for about 15 minutes on medium heat. You can also cook the chicken on a BBQ ll if you wish. 2. Shred the cooked chicken thinly and set aside to make a bombastic sandwich. The Making of the Shawarma Wrap Spread 1 teaspoon of Syrian Garlic paste along the centre/diameter of a pita bread. Add 2-3 tablespoons of chicken. Add salty cucumber pickles, some French fries, and some grilled tomatoes, roll and enjoy! Notes Try marinating a mix of 75% chicken breast and 25% skinless, boneless chicken thighs. The fat in the thighs gives the chicken a nice kick when grilled. Add grilled tomatoes in the sandwich instead of row tomatoes. Some restaurants add French fries in the sandwich, others add a cabbage/mayo salad to the sandwich. Baking or broiling in the oven will rid the chicken of its juice and must be avoided if possible. We found that using a panini grill cooks faster and keeps the moisture inside the chicken. *********************************************************************** Book Review- “The Jungle Book” Storyline: Abandonment followed by fostering is the major theme of Jungle Book. It is an adventure-story by my favourite writer Rudyard Kipling. It is about the cordial relationship between a young boy called Mowgli and the animals in the jungle. When Mowgli was a baby, Shere Khan, a bad tiger caught him and took him into the jungle. All animals in the jungle are afraid of Shere Khan. He is a man-eater and he would like to eat Mowgli. However, Mowgli is able to escape. A canine family helps Mowgli and it also takes care of him.Mowgli learns to live in the jungle. Mowgli’s best friends are Baloo, the sloth bear, and Bagheera, the Black Panther. 81
They help Mowgli in every situation. But the time comes, when Mowgli should go away and escape from Shere Khan. Therefore, Mowgli goes to a village to learn the people’s language and life style. Shere Khan goes to the village where Mowgli finally kills him. Then he goes back to the jungle, because the people of the village think that Mowgli is bad. Mowgli is very glad to be in the jungle and he lives there for the rest of his life. What I liked most: 1. Mowgli adapts well to each impediment that is thrown his way. 2. The friendship between Bagheera, Baloo and Mowgli. 3. Shere Khan is a very convincing and scary antagonist. What I didn’t like: 1. The part in which Shere Khan, the wicked tiger, takes Mowgli to the jungle. 2. Shere Khan kills a buffalo. 3. Shere Khan kills Akela by throwing him off a cliff. My Recommendations The Jungle Books can be regarded as classic stories told by an adult to children. They also constitute a complex literary work of art. They are best known for the 'Mowgli' stories; the tale of a baby abandoned and brought up by wolves, educated in the ways and secrets of the jungle by Kaa the python, Baloo the bear, and Bagheera the black panther. The stories are a mixture of fantasy, myth, and magic. Children who are fond of reading must read it when they are children. It teaches them moral values like compassion and care. Educational Counselling- Article Educational Counselling is concerned with providing advice and assistance to students to improve study skills or provide guidance with school-related problems that interfere with their performance. It also offers help in the development of their educational plans and choice of appropriate courses. A school counsellor provides support to students and their families. Barriers in Learning All students in the school may not always be of the same background, financial status, academic skills and social behaviour. They may differ in the problems they face, as well as their capacity to cope with them. Students may face certain barriers in learning which will have direct impact on their performance. Emotional barriers include peer pressure, fear of failure and lack of self-esteem. Motivational barriers are lack of goals and lack of interest in their studies. Learning environment barriers include course format and poor learning experience. Family, financial barriers, worries and bullying can take a toll on the students’ behaviour and performance. This is when counselling becomes relevant. Understanding their emotional concerns and giving them timely moral support and guidance can make a remarkable difference in their overall performance. Role of the Counsellor An educational counsellor tries to understand the concerns of students and make relevant conversations with teachers and school authorities to make school a comfortable place for them. Some of the ways through which a counsellor can help the student are the following: Academic and Career Support The purpose of counselling is to offer valuable life-lessons to the students so that they may become professionals in their career. They are able to choose between different careers and can prepare themselves for a particular field according to their education and interests. Parental Counselling For students who are troubled due to family problems, the counsellor helps parents understand their children better by discussing the issues that they are struggling with at school or home. Decision making A good counsellor can help students to grow up with better decision- making skills in their academic, personal or professional life. A strong support while making 87
decisions at crucial turning points of life can make remarkable positive changes in their future. Personal Development Counsellors play a vital role in students’ personal development. A good emotional, behavioural and social support is really significant in students’ journey. One of the major challenges is to help them overcome the depression and face life positively in case they face bullying. Benefits of School Counselling Some of the benefits of school counselling are: Counselling offers support to both teachers and parents who work with the same children. It creates an open dialogue between all parties involved surrounding any issues that may arise at home or within a student’s academic career. It helps students set personal goals that they want to achieve. It gives children the necessary tools to become successful adults by teaching them how to manage their emotions and behaviour. It offers children the opportunity to explore different career paths that they might pursue in the future. Counselling also encourages students to become more involved in extracurricular activities at school such as sports which will help them to make new friends while also focusing on personal growth through teamwork with others who enjoy doing similar things as themselves. The Sparrow and the Monkey- The Fable Retold There was a sparrow who lived on a banyan tree in the jungle. He lived with his wife. A monkey also lived under the same tree. One day, it started raining heavily. The two sparrows sat comfortably in their nest which protected them from the rain and cold, but the monkey was homeless. He sat under the banyan tree, withstanding the adverse weather. He was feeling cold and was getting wet. The sparrow was watching him from the tree and she told the monkey, “Brother! Look at me and my husband; we are very small but we made a home for ourselves; you are very big and strong too. Why don’t you build a house for yourself?” The monkey was irritated and said, “Who are you to advise me? Look at your size! How small you are! Don’t dare to fight with me. If you don’t stop, I will destroy your nest right now.” The sparrow continued to advise the monkey. In an outrage, the monkey climbed the tree. As the branches were wet and slippery, he fell down and broke his leg. Moral: Harming others will always reverse back. Be polite in your demeanour. Calvin Arun 5B 89
