We had long given up on the wreath leschenaultia display on the Goodlands Road which at one point was prolific enough to have signage announcing its proximity. Being a disturbed earth specialist, the longer the earth remains undisturbed the more diminished the display becomes and even another display along the Wanarra Road which a few years ago was a veritable carpet on the roadside, was reduced to the odd hardy specimen. AND HOW IT AFFECTS YOUR IRTY ENGINE’S HEALTH DIESEL ByAlexGarner It’s Golden, slippery, and propels many of our vehicles into places less travelled – yet that’s often all we choose to know about diesel! There’s a lot to like about this fuel, and also a lot to be aware of. Know your fuel, and you’ll be better prepared to make your engine run longer and stronger. Dirty fuel can wreck a great trip. nvited up to Cooinda Lodge at Kakadu LONE by one of my grandsons who was working there last year, my calender Iwas too full at that time to make it. Keen to get up there this season, I arranged a few weeks mid-year in my schedule, only to find the young bloke had moved on taking with him my chance at reduced accommodation rates. In the end I booked a room for three nights at $637, lots more than I’d expected to pay but I felt that a well-appointed, air-conditioned retreat might be worthwhile for an old bloke up there. Enquiries concerning a route through Aboriginal central desert lands brought the news that no permits were being issued for travel on the South Australian section of the Gunbarrel, the way I originally wanted to go. Having had increasing difficulties obtaining permits in recent years, I decided (the hell with it) to go via the Eyre Highway and return through the Kimberley. I also made the decision to travel alone to allow greater flexibility (most of my usual followers were less than keen on my seeming fixation on bitumen and motels for this trip anyway) and to pre-book a few key stopovers along the way due to my fears of poor weather on the southern route. A few of my mates were worried I’d get myself stuck somewhere so I had to promise not to go “off-track”, a promise I tried hard to keep for the most part. I also carried a borrowed sat-phone just in case. After an easy doddle down to Norseman I followed the Eyre Highway across to the border, my only mistake being to refuel at Madura at $1.98/litre before finding that the Liberty Roadhouse at Mundrabilla was 12 cents/litre cheaper as was Eucla although Border Village was $2.01/litre. (This was back in June, so prices would be way higher now.) I’m sure I could have checked fuel prices on the net before departure and co-ordinated fuel stops for the entire trip a little more economically than just winging it. 144 Western 4W Driver #109
