TRACK From Linda Bloffwitch days along the Holland track from Hyden to Coolgardie. While it’s not a difficult track, it had numerous water and mud filled wombat holes after recent rains. This made towing a bit challenging at times as the track is narrow in parts and our trailer is wider than the wheel track of the vehicle. We also found tyre pressures played a big part on the comfort of the ride as the track surface is constantly changing. We encountered sand and rock, but other times there was a firm track base which would quickly change to sloppy mud. As wet as the track was, we used a variety of pressures depending on the circumstances to avoid losing traction with the trailer. The STT PROs have a very aggressive tread pattern with scoops in the pattern which we found helped clear out the mud and gave good traction, and the raised rubber ribs in the tyre grooves helped to push stones out of the tread. We used to joke that these were self-cleaning tyres. While mud terrains are notorious for chipping, this has been improved with the new silica compound, and there’s no doubt that running the right pressures for the conditions has helped by allowing the tyres to soak up the terrain and simply roll over rocks. As a tyre that’s designed for 80% of the time on dirt and mud, with 20% for road and sand, we get some road noise on the blacktop, but don’t find it a problem when we regularly rotate and rebalance the tyres. There’s no doubt they’re at home on the dirt, and since that’s what we crave, that suits us to a tee and we’re more than happy with our tyre selection. Western 4W Driver #109 185
