Year 6 How might we create sustainable patterns of living in our community? Year Six students at Kingsway Christian College were introduced Video to the topic of Sustainability through collaborating with their Year One buddies in discussions about what their future might look like at school. This provided the context to investigate how the students’ current attitudes and practices, impact their own school environment. Modelled on Kath Murdoch’s Inquiry process, the ‘Tuning In’ activity was a rubbish audit, which provided the Year Six students the context for deeper inquiry as they became aware of the wider impact of waste on the environment. Using Chris Harte’s Design Thinking Model, the students gained empathy toward the global issue of plastics and food waste through video reports on global plastics. They then worked in groups to consider real solutions to real-world problems and embarked on the design process. Throughout the journey, students were alerted to a range of Global Competencies as they were demonstrated or needed. They considered the deeper questions needed to answer their open question or idea, proposed solutions and designs, and recognised the need to consider alternative perspectives. The value of collaboration and critique was weaved in throughout the project, empowering them for future action. Finally, our students will be presenting their prototype solutions to school leaders and local businesses where appropriate.
