Coyle celebrated the hard work they have completed during their Spring Project. The STEAM Team set up in September 2015 and has involved pupils from St Patrick's College, Dungannon Primary School and Windmill Integrated Primary School participating in a wide range of activities to develop pupil skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. The Bell Page 2 BEST WISHES! Very best wishes to three of our teaching staff who are retiring at the end of June. Mr. Damian Barton, Mrs. Catherine Fox and Mrs. Mary McKeown have provided decades of invaluable service to our school- and the entire staff wishes them all the very best in the years ahead. The staff of St. Patrick’s College would also like to extend our best wishes towards our I.T. Placement student Dermot Quinn who embarks on his final year of undergraduate study in Ulster University in September; and to Miss Leanne Grimley and Miss Niamh Laverty who are looking forward to their respective wedding ceremonies during the summer months. BELOW: A special assembly was held recently for Mrs. McKeown, and students presented her with flowers to mark her retirement. Collaborative Schools Project As part of our collaborative schools project, Dungannon Primary School paired with St. Patrick's College in welcoming David Nesbitt from i-Covers, a local business, to demonstrate how to solve some of the most common faults and problems with our i-phones. This important learning experience was enjoyed by our STEAM team and Coding club members, the next generation of software engineers! St. Patrick’s College thanks David, Paul and Janine from i-Covers.
Volume 9, Issue 2 Page 3 Launch of New School Jerseys Representatives from six local businesses who kindly sponsored new sets of jerseys for the various sports teams in St. Patrick’s College, visited on the morning of Tuesday 28th March to present these jerseys. These sponsors are: Bellamianta, Irish TV, Annagher Services, H2 Sheds, Hagan’s Bar and the Doorstep Restaurant. Included in the photographs are the sponsors, pupils, and members of teaching staff. St. Patrick’s College would like to thank all of these sponsors for their outstanding support during the school year. The Irish News Young News Readers Project On Monday April 10th at Year 8 assembly, Mr. Coyle presented gold certificates and prizes to the winners of the Irish News Critical Media Literacy Project. For eight weeks of this term, our pupils learned about the layout and structure of information in The Irish News, and how to critically evaluate it. This was an exceptional learning project, and well done to all of our Year 8 pupils who received a certificate for their participation.
The Bell Page 4 A Passion for Learning Can you guess who this is? Our pupils really enjoyed their visit to the ‘Living History’ suite in the Ulster Museum, Belfast. This marvellous facility is open from Monday to Saturday each week. There have been a number of important educational visits to iconic venues in Belfast and Dublin during this school year. A Post-16 group from St. Patrick’s College visited the Ulster Museum in Belfast in December and were given a fascinating tour of the Museum’s exhibits and learning zones. On June 22nd, the History, Geography and R.E. Departments organised a visit to Dublin; 45 pupils learned about the fascinating story of Irish people’s migration to other parts of the globe in The Irish Emigration Museum at Custom House Quay, and the group also visited Kilmainham Gaol where many of the key figures in Irish History such as Thomas Clarke and the other leaders of the 1916 Rising were incarcerated. It has been a great learning experience for everyone involved!
Volume 9, Issue 2 Page 5 CTS Skills Development Our school has formed a strong relationship with Coalisland Training Services over the past few years. Pupils from St. Patrick’s College have worked on developing their skills in various areas. Year 10 pupil Savio De Oliveira has been involved in producing a number of projects as part of his learning at CTS. Well done to Savio and all the other pupils who have worked so hard this year. This work has led to some of our students receiving achievement awards. #STEAMCLUB Frog Flower Bed Display The STEAM Team Spring Project has involved pupils taking part in a STEAM Quiz and creating frog sculptures from used tyres donated by Philip White Tyres. Pupils have re-planted all the beds in the garden area and polytunnel. BELOW: A picture of our frog flower bed made during STEAM club. Extra help was provided by Mrs Brankin and Year 8 students Karmen and Bianca 8MK and Wiktoria and Brigita 8PK to complete it.
The Bell Page 6 Under-16 Ulster Basketball Success for S.P.C. On Friday 9th December, St Patrick’s College Under 16 team won the Ulster Colleges Basketball Plate Final –defeating St. Joseph’s Derry by 51 points to 34 points in the final played at Magherafelt High School. The team had enjoyed a successful league campaign, and the team carried this great form into the knockout stages. Congratulations to the team and their coaches Mr. Fintan Colgan and Mr. Terry O’Neill for ensuring another successful chapter in our school’s esteemed Basketball tradition. Volume 9, Issue 2 Page 7 Super Achievements in Gaelic Games On Monday December 5th, St. Patrick’s College Year 8 footballers won a thrilling final– in a high scoring encounter, our team won by 4-7 to 5-3 to clinch the Plate. Congratulations to the team and their coaches Mr. Brian McGuckin and Mr. Conor McMahon. There were other final appearances during the school year, including some tremendous performances by our Under 14 Camogie team to reach the decider on Tuesday May 23rd however they were defeated by St. Joseph’s Crossmaglen. A last minute goal sealed the win for St. Patrick’s College. The team showed real character and commitment to emerge victorious! The Bell Page 8 Young Enterprise Project 2017: Epi-Step Miss Rodgers and our Young Enterprise group EpiStep attended the Dundalk Trade Fair on Friday 31st March. EpiStep competed against 20 teams and won Best Visiting Company and Best Overall Company! Enlighten Hope Present Cheques to Charities Further details about the group and information on their business idea can be found on their Twitter page: @Epi_Step_Health Our Languages Department hosted a very successful Careers Fair for Year 10 pupils in the School Assembly Hall on 21st February. Thanks to those companies and organisations who attended that day to speak to our pupils and offer advice and information on the range of careers opportunities relating to European languages. Volume 9, Issue 2 Page 9 SNAPBANK NAMED BEST DIGITAL BANK At the AIB Build a Bank Final in the RDS Dublin on Tuesday 25th April, Snapbank were announced as 'Best Digital Bank' in Ireland. Members of the team are: Kamil Malkowski (Marketing Manager), Aiste Lukosiunaite (Finance Manager); Ana Morais (Digital Officer). Mantas Venslovas (Managing Director), Silvija Onusaityte (Customer and Community Officer) and Karolina Baslaminova (CEO). Well done to members of our Year 8 group who raised £200 for the Cancer Fund for Children. Our pupils participated in a 'Read On' Readathon event during March; and their kind efforts will help towards providing facilities and support to children and their families affected by cancer. The Bell Page 10 PRESENTATION 2017 Thanks to Mrs McQuaid who visited St. Patrick's College on Wednesday 24th May and eloquently spoke to our pupils about the charity work that Trócaire does throughout the world, and the impact that school fundraising can achieve. Our pupils raised a total of £4153.51 for Trócaire during the Lenten Campaign - and well done to all our fundraisers across all the year groups who contributed. The overall top fundraiser was Hannah Hagan 10MR, pictured presenting the cheque to Mrs. McQuaid. On May 3rd, pupils from the STEAM Team and Coding Club took part in a 'flight' themed workshop delivered by David from SENTINUS. Pupils were required to make helicopters and rockets which they then tested outside. The pupils were required to work in teams to create their helicopters and rockets, testing different materials to establish how they could create the best final structure.
Volume 9, Issue 2 Page 11 Sports Day 2017 We held our Sports Day in absolutely superb conditions on Tuesday 20th June on the school 4G facility. Well done to all our pupils who took part in the Sports Day- and congratulations to the medal winners from all the various contests. Thanks also to the P.E. Department and other staff for organising and facilitating such a successful event.
Volume 9, Issue 2 St. Patrick’s College 41 Killymeal Road Dungannon On Wednesday 21st June, 11 very capable and enthusiastic students from Years 11, 12 and 13 and Mr. Curry and Mrs. Naughton attended a ‘Hackathon’ CONTACT DETAILS organised by AECOM and South West College, on behalf of the charity WaterAid. The students worked in teams alongside mentors to develop proof of Phone : (028) 87722205 concepts, towards the creation of a mobile app, that will promote better hygienic practices in Nicaragua. St. Patrick’s College Dungannon @StPatsCollege BOOKED: Well done to two of our A2 Moving Image Arts Students Ines Dias Moreira, and Paulina Miseckaite who produced, filmed and edited 'Booked' as part of the NCFE Level 2 Award in Preparing to Work in the Film Industry.
