On the go, the Maestro Edge 125 reminded me of my older scooter, a Honda Dio, as it felt familiar and fun. The Maestro Edge 125 feels effortless through traffic and does not lose composure at speeds. But while its TVS tyres are reasonably grippy, I did want more feedback at times. The rear shock absorber is softer as compared to the front forks that are firm, making for a sly odd feel over broken roads. Brakes though are nice. They are a combination of a ByBre-sourced 190mm front disc and a rear drum. Bite and feedback from the disc is good and the safety net of the integrated braking system is not intrusive. In fact, pulling a few stoppies and powerslides was easy! I wish Hero had given the tiny rear brake lock trigger though, as it is very useful. If asked to pick my favourite bit on this scooter, it would be its engine! It’s alive and rides with enthusiasm from the word go. Outputs are 9PS and 10.4 Nm and power delivery is smooth. However, with peak torque coming in much later than I would have liked, on-the- go overtaking was a little tricky at times. And boy, am I glad the Maestro Edge 125 is fuel injected! Fueling is precise and hence throttle responses are crisp, affording excellent control in traffic. I was able to cross the 100kmph mark on the speedometer with relative ease, given the scooter’s bantam weight and sprightly peformance both, which is very impressive too. There’s a hint of vibration at high speeds but they aren’t very noticeable. Hero is offering the Maestro Edge 125 in four variants and the one we got our hands on is the top variant equipped with alloy wheels, a front disc brake, a distinctive, ‘prismatic’ paint scheme that can change shades depending on the ambient ing around and the ‘Connect’ features. This variant retails at ₹ 81,900 ex- showroom. At the price the Maestro Edge 125 feels like a complete package that will prove to be useful and enjoyable to multiple members of a family. It feels like a pair of timeless blue denims that both Dad and I wouldn’t mind reaching out for. In that aspect, the new Maestro Edge 125 is certainly good value for money. However, given the growing number of urban scooter riders now opting for electrics, these sporty little scooters could quite possibly be the last of their kind in the near future. Which is a shame, because they offer a good day out on two wheels! November 2021 www.turbocharged.in 105

[ FEATURE ] WORDS ABHAY VERMA PHOTOGRAPHY GAURAV CHANDRASHEKAR OLD SCHOOL, SUPER COOL Royal Enfield is back to racing and it’s amazing how much potential the already well-acclaimed Continental GT 650 holds!

oyal Enfield and motorcycle racing aren’t really said in the same breath, not by my generation at least. But the manufacturer was a big name in racing, in the 1960s and 70s. Better known for its touring initiatives and classic motorcycles over R the past couple of decades, Royal Enfield is getting back to racing though! And when the invite to ride the race-prepped Continental GT-R650 dropped into my inbox, I just had to pull rank and go myself! The Continental GT Cup is being held in conjunction with the JK Tyre National Racing Championship and the first round was held at the Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore where we were to ride the bike and also witness the first round of races. Before the riding experience, a bit of the back story though. The idea of a racing series with the Continental GT 650 popped into Aspi Bhathena’s head back in 2018 at the first ride of the Royal Enfield twins in California in 2018. A legendary racer himself and a personality we have featured in our ‘Heroes of TURBOCHARGED’ series, Aspi has been tinkering with motorcycles for decades and spoke to Royal Enfield top boss Siddhartha Lal there and then. Lal TOP: The bubble fairing and lowered clip-ons work make the bike look very appealing as a race bike. And guess what, majority of that weight loss has been made possible by chucking away the The retro looking bubble fairing is a nod to the stock exhausts. Aspi tells me the stock bike’s twin race bikes of yore and adds to the visual charm. The exhausts weigh 11kg apiece while the race exhausts, design is very functional, but it’s the simplicity of the a set of bespoke stainless units, weigh a mere 5.6kg design that makes the GT-R650 look stunning. The collectively! The engine is bone stock but I’m told will clip-on handlebars sit below the top triple clamp to be worked on soon. The custom exhausts contribute make for a racier seating position and allow riders to a 12 percent hike over the stock bike’s 47PS output, to tuck in behind the fairing better. Footpegs are which is very impressive. And boy, do the exhausts higher and more rear set, to enable better lean angles sound glorious! to the exhausts. Given the tight corners at Kari, the race bikes were also running a 14 teeth front sprocket as compared to the stock bike’s 15 teeth one. The motor redlines very quickly thanks to the exhausts and shorter gearing, so the first few minutes were spent getting distracted by hitting the rev limiter sooner than expected. The seating position is ultra- committed but get past the discomfort and it’s easy to fall in love with the GT-R650. Come to think of it, the KTM 390 Duke and TVS Apache RR 310 are among the highest displacement race bikes in the national racing championship currently. And here you have a race bike with a 650cc, twin-cylinder heart! The quicker revving motor and shorter gearing helped the GT-R650 feel very quick around the tight corners and chicanes. The suspension hardware is stock but front forks use higher viscosity oil and the rear shock absorbers use linear rate springs to aid handling. Interestingly the race bike runs 18-inch rims, just like the stock bike and not 17-inch ones, but given the overall updates, it is quicker to turn-in and tip into corners in a flash. Throwing it from one side to another around chicanes it also felt very agile, also courtesy the stickier race rubber besides the firmer suspension and lighter weight. The torque spread is very even, making it easy to go around corners TOP: I got to catch up with the legendary Royal Enfield racer, 'Bullet Bose' aka G Subash Chandra Bose too! [ PRODUCT REVIEW ] RYNOX ‘CHOOSE YOUR LAYERS’ GEAR AND STORM EVO 2 GLOVES WORDS ISHAN LEE The problem with buying an all-season jacket and pants is you end up with layers you cant use most of the time given our tropical climate. Rynox offers its riding jackets and pants with standalone rain and thermal gear that you can buy separately. Their new ‘choose your layers’ strategy is genuinely practical. It is as fun as assembling your own PC. The jacket is a bit heavy for long off-road rides, but out on the open road, you’ll enjoy the large air vents. Its highlight though, besides the host of clever pockets is the waterproof chest pocket that can store the largest smartphone out there. I particularly liked the full mesh construction and the fit on the pants. They don’t feel big and bulky. Also if you have large riding boots on, these have a zipper at the ankles that run up to the thigh which also make it easier to wear/get out of. The gloves aren’t waterproof and have enough leather and Knox to cushion those palm-to-tarmac moments. The narrow glove opening takes some getting used to though The best part is that you’ll be safer in these. The density of the Knox Microlock armours on their gear is pretty thick. But excellence comes at a cost and hence most automatics are aspirational in nature. For this issue, I wanted to feature one of the most accessible automatics available in India today. Titan offers the Sectoral in a 43.5 mm stainless steel case with an in-house movement. Although this watch offers a humble beginning into the world of automatic watches, I would say, at least it is a start. ₹ 15,495 LONGINES EVIDENZA www.longines.com Drawing inspiration from one of their creations dating back to 1911, the Longines Evidenza makes for a special watch. Its simplicity is what adds to its elegance. With a 14mm lug distance, and 8.60mm thickness, it feels as gentle around the wrist as a finely cut bracelet. It can be easy to forget that you are wearing it and that is where this Longines is as practical as it is luxurious. The sapphire crystal is treated with multiple layers of anti-reflective coating, making the painted Roman numerals legible under varied conditions. On paper, it packs the necessary hardware to go through the motions of our everyday lives. With a self-winding mechanical movement beating at 28’800 vph, the L592 calibre gives this watch 45 hours of run time. ₹ 1.53 lakh HUBLOT CLASSIC FUSION - AEROFUSION BLACK MAGIC www.hublot.com As far as design ideologies are concerned, “art of fusion” is Hublot’s North Star. It refers to an unorthodox mentality of combining materials and concepts that create exquisite luxury watches. The 45mm case with its signature porthole design is a polished and satin-finished black ceramic body using a zirconium base, a material that Hublot says is almost entirely scratch-proof. The bezel offers this distinct depth that ushers your attention to the sapphire crystal which showcases HUB1155 self-winding Skeleton Chronograph Movement. The Black Magic is something that will go well with the Ducati Streetfighter V4, and yes Mr Wayne, it comes in black! ₹ 11.17 lakh 126 www.turbocharged.in ANuogvuesmtb2e0r221021

HUBLOT AEROFUSION MOONPHASE T I TA N I U M www.hublot.com Very few experiences in life are as beautiful as looking up at the moon at night. Imagine capturing that timeless feeling on your wrist. That’s the concept of a moonphase watch. Hublot is no stranger to technical watch building and the Moonphase is pure eye candy. A Sapphire crystal is girded in a 45mm satin-finished and titanium bezel that when polished features a slightly bluish metallic sheen. Inside it is your theatre of celestial movement with a moonphase dial over a partially skeletonised watch look. The moonphase dial itself looks cool with a pair of engraved metal moon discs. Driven by its HUB1131 self-winding Moonphase movement, you should get upto 42 hours of power reserve. ₹ 12.09 lakh OMEGA SEAMASTER 007 EDITION seikowatches.co.in This 42mm Seamaster, is identical to James Bond’s field watch in No Time To Die. Powered by Omega’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8806, it is anti-magnetic up to 15,000 gauss and offers the industry’s highest standards of precision. The titanium mesh bracelet offers a premium fit and tapers rather nicely. However, the deploying clasp does feel a little chunky and this is where the optional NATO strap may offer a sleeker feel around the wrist. Another neat little touch on this Bond edition Seamaster is the broad arrow symbol on the dial and case back. As seen on old British military watches, this symbol gives you that authentic standard issue field gear feels, something an MI6 agent would certainly have. ₹ 7.65 lakh Background Image by mibro from Pixabay SEIKO PROSPEX KING TURTLE seikowatches.co.in The Prospex series announced the arrival of Seiko’s first diver’s watch in 1965. Over five decades later, the Propex line is still revered by adventure seekers for its ruggedness and dependability. As homage to the original Turtle, the new ‘King’ certainly offers a large yet assuring fit on the wrist. With a 45mm bezel and height of 13mm the watch is very similar to the original Turtle. The bezel has been redesigned with accentuated grooves and rotating the bezel offers a heavy but reassuring click underscoring its diving heritage. The luminescence offers good legibility as expected from a certified dive watch, it ensures water resistance of 200m. ₹ 47,000 WATCHES COURTESY: CT PUNDOLE www.ctpundole.com NovAeumgbusetr 2021 www.turbocharged.in 127

[ FUTURE MOBILITY ] WORDS SHASHANK SINGH AXIAL FLUX MOTOR They say it’s hard to improve upon perfection. This technological innovation begs to differ An electric motor (EM) is one of the world’s itself. This RMF interacts with RMF on the stator and most efficient engines. With just one this forms a magnetic coupling. Thus rotor starts to moving part, it has the least friction and rotate. In this design, as you can imagine, magnetic complexity of any other engine. Its design lines of flux (the invisible flow lines of magnetism) has largely remained unchanged over are generated along the radius of stator and rotor, the century with the only thing holding since all are cylindrical in shape. it back being battery technology. Cool An axial flux motor works on the same principle, inventions like an inverter were used to the only difference being that here stator and rotor improve its part-load performance. Now though, a are disc-shaped and thus magnetic lines of flux flow new EM design is gaining popularity and its results along its axis. The disc-shaped stator is sandwiched are claimed to have bettered the best out there. between two-disc shaped permanent magnet It is called the axial flux motor. To understand rotors. This makes the motor quite compact while it better allow me to begin from the start. An EM giving greater output at the rotor, which are two in has three components — a metal casing, stationary numbers now. By the virtue of design, the magnetic electrical windings (cylindrical shaped and also interaction between stator and rotors is much more known as stator) and a solid rotating shaft (rotor). efficient, making this motor three to five times The rotor outer diameter is slightly less than that of more energy denser than conventional motors. This the inner diameter of the stator, and thus the rotor means lesser weight and more range for the same freely hangs in the middle while being supported at power. These motors are ideal for use in electric ends from bearings when assembled. So in essence, two-wheelers, electric aircraft and the likes, where there is no physical contact between stator and space is a major constraint but power demand is rotor. When electricity is passed through the stator, higher. The recent airborne Rolls-Royce’s all-electric a rotating magnetic field (RMF) is generated which Spirit of Innovation aircraft has three such axial flux revolves around the rotor, thus inducing another motors arranged in tandem to power its propeller. RMF on it. This inversely induces electric current to It’s just a matter of time when such examples will flow in the rotor which again generates an RMF of power our EVs for good. 128 www.turbocharged.in November 2021
