curiosiTIES a curious look on ties by LABO @ Marmara Üniversitesi Cumhuriyet Müzesi 2015 LABO has a reputation when it comes to organizing themat- ic exhibitions crossing the borders between arts and design. Universally recognizable themes such as the glasses on your nose (TAKE A LOOK, 2006-07), the walking stick (LET ‘S STICK TOGETHER, 2010) or the skeleton (BONES, 2012) are only few of the many that got a LABO treatment. Premeditated we challenge a network of designers and artists from all disciplines to visualize their individual approach to the same –archetypical- object, in order to compile a collection of surprising and inspiring new views on it ...in such a way that the particular –everyday- object will never be the same again after visiting a LABO exhibition on the topic.8
After a successful collaboration between LABO and Marmara Univer-sity on the topic of the walking stick in 2010 we intended to “sticktogether” in the long run. LET’S STICK TOGETHER assembled over onehundred different approaches to the cane in the year Istanbul was cul-tural capital of Europe.Five years later LABO as well as the Marmara University’s Faculty of FineArts are still crossing curious borders and decided to collaborate again, this time on the solemn theme of the TIE.CuriosiTIES was shown first in the Fashion Museum of Hasselt, Bel-gium. Again over one hundred projects convinced the curious visitorthat an object –in this case the tie- can have many different faces. For the Istanbul edition, the exhibition has been expanded with nu-merous new curiosiTIES by Turkish designers and artists, professors, students and alumni. Once again the Marmara University’s Cumhuri-yet Museum turned out to be a tremendous place to bring a relativ-istic exhibition like this, a curious and exciting exploration throughtime and space ...dressed up with a tie. Not only material, shape ortype of knot, but also the identity and the use of the tie are beingquestioned... Humor is probably the main catalyst that creates theTIES here! Let’s cherish this.
