General Information : Getting to know Chulalongkorn University From the past to present Chulalongkorn University, Thailand’s first institution of higher learning, was founded in March 1917 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI). The university was named after his father, King Chulalongkorn the Great (Rama V), who laid the foundations for modern education system in Thailand. “All of our subjects, from our royal children down to the lowest commoners, will have the same opportunity to study – be they royals, nobles or commoners.” was the quote from King Rama V to confirm his belief in equal educational opportunity. Over a century, the university has continuously worked for excellence in education and research, befitting itself to the name of a beloved monarch, King Chulalongkorn the Great. In 2021, Chulalongkorn University celebrates its 104th Anniversary. The university’s vision is “A leading creator of knowledge and innovations for the sustainable development of society.” “Phra Kieo” is a coronet worn by Thai princes and princesses. It became the emblem of Chulalongkorn University when King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), named the university. Pink was the colour selected in 1935 by the CU Student Union as the symbolic colour of Chulalongkorn University when the first annual football match between Chulalongkorn University and Tham- masat University took place. Amongst all the colours, pink was select- ed since it was a traditionally auspicious colour for Tuesday, the day of birth of King Chulalongkorn. 1
Getting to know Educational System Management Leadership Program Owing to the purpose to develop Educational Management in Thailand, Educational Administration Division was established in 1960, reporting to the Faculty of Education. Professor Dr. Prachoomsuk Achava-amrung, the acting Dean of the Faculty of Education in that period was the acting head of Educational Administration Division. Then in 1962, a Master’s program in Educational Administration was opened and later in 1988, the Doctoral program was opened. From 1962 through present, we have got many graduates both in Master’s and Doctoral program all around the country. This demonstrates a strong and effective connection of educational leaders in Thailand. Educational System Management Leadership Program (ESML) is the new international doctoral program, operated by the Division of Educational Administration, Department of Educational Policy, Management and Leadership. This ESML program is established in 2021, having Professor Dr. Pruett Siribanpitak as the chairperson of the program with the purpose of empowering and enriching the new generation of Educational System Management leaders, both Thai and international students, in order to transform and strengthen our education system to be able to take more vital and active role in promoting social, economic and political development responsive to future global changes. In academic year 2021, we accept the first badge of 11 international students. 2
