Welcome This magazine comprises of the efforts of class Year 6 National Continental school of Cairo. As a project piece supervised by Mr. Grayson Cadogan, it is intended to show some of the ideas and creative thoughts, to it’s audience. Dear Year 6 WELCOME TO YEAR 6 MAGAZINE We have had fun this year and I’m sure it has already become a memorable year for us all in one way or The reason we called this edition Life Lessons was that we all think another. school should be a place of discovery as well as facts and figures. So You have been, and this is true to say, the most with that in mind we have tried to put some ideas together to show we challenging and therefore interesting group I have had can also think different. ALL YEAR 6 (2013) the pleasure of dealing with. You also did some amazing things this year. You took charge of your own learning, covered many more units with independence, learnt a thousand or more new words, helped the school produce its first Yearbook, in sha Allah many more to come, and to round it off 6A won the Continental sports cup 2013. Good show. I would like to thank you all for the entertainment… to put it lightly, you have bestowed on an old man . I felt like a kid again it was Surreal. Also I got my first teacher’s daily apple, which was a milestone. I consider that an honor. Its like you actually might be a real teacher when you see that red or green fruit machine sitting on your desk. But I’m digressing. I know this year was tough on you, but I now see why I teach. I actually enjoy my job. A few thing that stuck out in my mind.. The first day of school how innocent you all looked. Butter wouldn’t melt in your mouths. What an awakening I got. Ehhh. I remember the time you got hypnotized or at least some peoples hands were stuck together and also when one heard Nahwat sing the twinkle song and we played it backwards. Remember when we used to play fling the teacher. Also the day tears don’t work and the girls stopped and the boys started! Can anyone remember the imaginary girl that we made. I’m sure you can picture her right now. I remember when you all increased your reading speed by nearly double in just a 5 minute exercise we did in . And the aliens… I think I will leave the other memories to you. Thank you all for the gifts and nice kind words of encouragement from the parents and you guys. Ahmed Hisham was chosen P.M. for the projects with his dedicated team of people good joy. Big thanks also to Sohalia 6C Nahwat 6B and Youssef Redan for editing this. And for all your contribution however big or small. So a big ThankYou. You did Great! Well done. I had fun making this. Enjoy your magazine and remember to work smart now hard and Short Sharp and Snazzy! Mr. Grayson Ian Cadogan B.Sc (Hons) Grayson Cadogan Our theme this year is diverse; nature and technology. Many years ago, people didn't have any of these things and didn't have time to do anything except work, but now peo- ple have time to play. Now there is something called PSP. Children love playing with these new gadgets especially PSP because they can waste their time playing. PSP stands for “Play Station Portable”. PSP was first invented in 12 December 2004 and has been evolving by time. It was invented in Japan by The Sony Company, then it was known all over the world. PSP was first made as a trial then when the inventors found that it is a way for kids to play and have fun instead of sitting bored all the time they decided to make many of them. Now you have the PSP phone targeted for kids Children like to play games on PSP, they download games through the internet and the can also download songs, but they must not play a lot because games and music actually affected you especially when you are playing all the time. The advice is to play about only an hour daily. Life Lesson # 8 When you think you’ve seen it all expect the unexpected. 9

ANIMALSANIMALS A Endangered Animals ANIMALSNIMALS Endangered Animals Animals that are in the verge of getting extinct are termed as endan- gered animals. These animals are killed most often for human needs and hunted on a regular basis. The fact that their population keeps on depleting at a very alarming rate, without any increase in their popula- tion, makes us aware that some are falling into the endangered species list. As per studies, endangered animals are those animals which can get extinct in the next 20 years. Whereas critically endangered animals might get extinct in the next 10 years. The endangered animals' infor- mation is very critical to humans as we can take the right actions to stop its extinction by promoting its breed as well as avoiding unneces- sary killings. The animals, getting extinct in the wild, can be tamed for some time to promote their reproduction. Animals getting endangered are a threat not only to the environment but also to humans Here's the list of animals that are endangered: Dholes: Dholes is a native of Southeast Asia. The International Union at the verge of extinction. of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has declared dholes as endangered owing to their sudden fall in numbers and they are in the verge of extinction. Giant Panda: Giant panda or panda literally means, \"black and white cat-foot\". Panda is a bear and a native of central western and south western China. It can be recognized easily with its large black patches around the eyes. Although there is a fall in the number of pandas, certain reports also show that their number is on a rise. However the Siberian Tiger: They are also known as Amur, Altaic, Korean, and North Chinese or Usury tiger. Researches in 2009 revealed that the population of the current Siberian tigers is almost the same as Caspian tigers that are extinct now. International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is not yet certain to reclassify these species from Endangered to Vulnerable. Ethiopian Wolf: They are also known as Abyssinian wolf, Abyssinian fox, red jackal, Simian fox, or Simian jackal and are a native of Africa. Blue Whale: Blue whale and its few species are found in the Indian Ocean, North Atlantic, North Pacific and South Pacific oceans. They were abundant in almost all the oceans of the earth before the begin- ning of the twentieth century. For years they have been hunted and are 36 Life Lesson Always choose Life.

Bonobo: Bonobo, which was previously called as Pygmy Chimpanzee, is a great ape. Bonobos are most endangered and found only in the De- mocratic Republic of the Congo. It is termed to be most endangered with only some remaining. Apart from this, we also have Snow Leopard, African Wild Dog, Tiger, and Indian Rhinoceros, for a few to name. The critically endangered animals include: Mountain Gorilla, Arakan Forest Turtle, Darwin's Fox, Javan Rhino, Brazilian Merganser, Gharial, Vaquita, among others. In order to maintain the ecological cycle, we need to make sure that animal species are conserved or else the future of mankind will not know much about them, and this will also lead to deforestation. In short, a threat to mankind. Ring-tailed lemurs also spend a lot of time on the ground, which is un- usual among lemur species. They forage for fruit, which makes up the greater part of their diet, but also eat leaves, flowers, tree bark, and sap. Ring-tailed lemurs have powerful scent glands and use their unique odor as a communication tool and even as a kind of weapon. Lemurs mark their territory by scent, serving notice of their presence to all who can smell. During mating season, male lemurs battle for dominance by trying to out stink each other. They cover their long tails with smelly secretions and wave them in the air to deter- mine which animal is more powerful. Ring-tailed lemurs live in groups known as troops. These groups may include 6 to 30 animals, but aver- age about 17. Both sexes live in troops, but a domi- nant female presides over all. Did You Know… THE KING COBRA SNAKE: The King Cobra Snake is the world's longest venomous snake, with a length up to 5.6 m (18.5 FT) and weighs 6kg (13 LB). This snake is found in forests from India through Southeast Africa to Indonesia and Philip- pines. The skin of this snake is either; olive-green, tan, or black, and it has faint, pale yellow cross bands down the length of the body. The belly is cream or pale yellow, and the scales are smooth. KING COBRA SNAKES FACTS: When confronted, the Cobra rears up the anterior portion (usually one-third) of its body when extending the neck, show- ing the fangs and hissing loudly. The King Cobra’s diet is other snakes mainly: rat snakes, small pythons and even other venom- ous snakes. In Burma King Cobras are often used by female snake charmers. The charmer is usually tattooed with three pictograms, using an ink mixed with snake venom; superstition holds that it protects the charmer from the snake. By Hana 6B 41

Mysterious Universe “Why are so few students interested in science?” This commonly posed question reflects a continuing worry among educators and cultural pundits. Here is a slight paraphrase: “Why do so few youngsters want to become biologists, when so many are inter- ested in cryptozoology?” The purpose of my paraphrase is to suggest that such matters as Loch Ness monsters—or unidentified flying objects (UFOs) or psychic phenomena—offer a way of getting students interested in science. These topics are mysteries, and human beings are naturally curious about mysteries. In trying to get to the bottom of them, we find ourselves learning about science along the way. Moreover, we learn about it in away that shows science not to be a boring, cut-and-dried subject as it is sometimes portrayed in.
