Detailed Project Report for Greywater Management in Kadajji village Kadajji . G.P. Davanagere District Annexure 3- Waste Stabilisation Pond Prepared by- Vidwan Ventures Engineering Consultants 35 | P a g e

Detailed Project Report for Greywater Management in Kadajji village Kadajji . G.P. Davanagere District Waste Stabilisation Pond A waste stabilization pond is an artificial water basin, where wastewater is retained for a certain period of time thereby allowing natural treatment through action of sunlight, air and microorganisms. There are different variants of WSPs available, which are often used in combination with each other. The most common practice is linking anaerobic, facultative and maturation ponds in series to achieve high effluent quality. Typical waste stabilization ponds do not use electromechanical equipment. However facultative ponds with surface aerators are sometimes used for high effluent quality. Processes in Waste Stabilization Pond WSPs are usually divided in three types: Anaerobic Ponds, Facultative Ponds and Maturation Ponds. A typical WSPs system includes each of these types in series, each type forming one treatment stage. Anaerobic ponds are built to a depth of 2 to 5 m and have a relatively short detention time of 1 to 7 days. Facultative ponds should be constructed to a depth of 1 to 2.5 m and have a detention time between 5 to 30days. Aerobic/ maturation ponds are usually between 0.5 to 1.5 m deep with a retention time of 15 to 20 days. If used in combination with algae and/or fish harvesting (see Fish Pond), this type of pond is effectiveat removing the majority of nitrogen and phosphorus from the effluent. Ideally, several aerobic ponds can be built in series to provide a high level of pathogen removal. Pre-treatment is essential to prevent scum formation and to hinder excess solids and garbage from enteringthe ponds. To prevent leaching into the groundwater, the ponds should have a liner. The liner can be madefrom clay, asphalt, compacted earth, or any other impervious material. To protect the pond from runoff anderosion, a protective berm should be constructed around the pond using the excavated material. A fence should be installed to ensure that people and animals stay out of the area and that garbage does not enter the ponds. Only low concentration wastewater may be discharged directly into primary facultative ponds. Depending on the requirement for the final effluent in terms of pathogen reduction, only anaerobic andfacultative ponds are constructed in some instances. Advantages and Disadvantages of Waste Stabilization Pond Advantages Disadvantages ● Simplicity in design and construction ● High area requirement ● Easy for operation and reliability ● High cost, depending on cost of land ● Low equipment & power requirement ● Formation of algae which causes greenish color in effluent ● Skilled labor is not required ● Mosquito control required ● Can handle intermittent usage and shock loading ● Not suitable for colder regions Prepared by- Vidwan Ventures Engineering Consultants 36 | P a g e

Detailed Project Report for Greywater Management in Kadajji village Kadajji . G.P. Davanagere District ● Effluent can be reused in aquaculture ● Not very effective at removing heavy metals from waste water ● Can be built and repaired with locally available materials ● Evaporation losses in hot, dry climates are high ● The effluent is suitable for irrigation because of its high-nutrient and low pathogen content.
