For example, ginger and other herbs are cultivated in the nursery to cultivate more ginger plants. Ginger & Herbs Nursery IFSSA University for Society (U4S) initiated by the Ministry of Education in 2019 has created a new dimension to the public universities in Malaysia (UA) to contribute to the well-being of society by increased commercial value and wealth creation. Through this program, all UAs are encouraged to contribute to the development of the community either by improving skills or generating income. UMK has taken the initiative to mobilise this program by highlighting the economic empowerment program to the fishing community in Setiu, Terengganu. The U4S programmes conducted include community discussions and site visits for the Malaysian eastern zone on 10 July 2020, a practical programme involving recreational fishing packages on 28 to 29 September 2020 and a practical

programme for processing downstream fish-based products on 8 November 2020. To increase community awareness on environment and sustainability, UMK organised a knowledge sharing session called “Celebrating World’s Earth Day” (“Memperingati Hari Bumi Sedunia”) with local communities, especially with the local youths.

3.3: GREEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP RELATED SDG: Green business The production of nature-based products is one of the initiatives pioneered by the Faculty of Industry- based and Agriculture (FIAT) in UMK. Locally-produced nature-based products are extremely beneficial to the community in terms of income generation and diversification. The local community can leverage the different fruit season into producing different products each season. For example, rambutan can be used to make vinegar and pink guava can be used to make pomace powder for bread-making.

Rambutan Vinegar produced by Faculty of Industry-based and Agriculture (FIAT) In 2021, UMK students have secured grants totalling RM 120,000 from the Malaysia Social Innovation Acceleration Program (MySIAP) Challenge (http://umktv.umk.edu.my/global/368-produk-inovasi-umk- menangi-geran-penyelidikan.html) to produce the following nature-based products: 1. Gummi Cuka Rambutan Asli berperisa Tembikai/ Watermelon-flavoured Rambutan Vinegar Gummies 2. Production of Pink Guava Pomace Powder for Bread Making 3. Computer-aided approach for designing of massage bar using watermelon skin extract and mint In the same year, UMK students have also participated in the Swiss-ASEAN Learning and Teaching (SALT) and Social Entrepreneurship Acceleration (SEA) Cooperation, where the ‘Mambong Pottery’ product successfully entered the second stage in the latter.

Rebranding of Mambong pottery products by UMK Researchers Social Enterprise UMK strives to build the capacity of Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) entrepreneurs through the ‘UMK Asnaf Digital Social Enterprise Kelantan’ programme. This programme empowers life-changing mindset of Asnaf SMEs in human, social and economic aspects so they may have a more positive outlook on life. The programme also offers capacity building training related to the use of technology in digital entrepreneurship and fertigation practices in agriculture.

Bank Rakyat Program Examples of UMK’s social enterprise projects in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance (MOF) include the Vertical Cultivation Technology Programme and the Gray Oyster Mushroom Cultivation Programme. The aim of these projects is to help social enterprises maximise their profits while also maximising the benefits to society and the environment. The profits that they gained are then used to fund more social programmes.

CHAPTER 4: UMK RESPONSE TO COVID-19 RELATED SDG: 4.1: UMK COVID-19 RESPONSE PROGRAMS UMK is committed to ensuring the safety of our campuses. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, UMK has been closely monitoring and evaluating the progress and impacts of the outbreak and took necessary measures following the guidelines by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Safety Council (MKN). For instance, UMK launched a dedicated COVID-19 website (https://www.umk.edu.my/covid19/) to update all COVID-19 related information such as the COVID-19 daily status, hotspots, guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOP). Additionally, UMK has also developed the Response and Preparedness Plan for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases (https://www.umk.edu.my/covid19/BOOK_Pelan-RR-COVID-UMK-ver1.pdf) as a guideline for UMK community to handle and respond to COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Throughout the pandemic, researchers in UMK contributed their expertise into producing COVID-19 care kits under the brand ‘UMK Cares’. The products produced include hand sanitiser, personal protective equipment (PPE) suits, 3D face shield visor, intubation box, smart tracking app, V-Buster sanitise box and V-Surface disinfectant. These products were then distributed to frontliners and local communities under the ‘UMK for Society’ initiatives.

4.2: E-LEARNING TRANSFORMATION Before the COVID-19 pandemic, UMK has embarked on online, distance learning programmes, such as the Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) for a selected number of courses. When the pandemic hit, most of the lecturers were not ready for the complete switch to online distance learning as many were still unfamiliar with e-Learning tools and platforms. To remedy this, the UMK Centre for Academic Excellence and Development (CAED; http://pkpa.umk.edu.my/v5/) proactively trained lecturers to embrace online learning through a series of webinars comprising 15 main topics. These topics include the usage of synchronous and asynchronous online platforms such as Google Meet, Webex and Microsoft Teams, online assessment tools and student engagement softwares. The centre has upgraded the university’s e-learning platforms (http://ecampus.umk.edu.my/auto.php) and developed UMK Portal (https://portal.umk.edu.my/) as a one-stop centre to manage teaching and learning.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the UMK Office for Student Affairs and Alumni actively conducted a series of webinars to support our graduates through hard times, especially in navigating through the

pandemic-hit jobscape. Entrepreneurship experts from UMK gathered together with international experts to discuss the post-pandemic trends of the global economy to deliver a bigger perspective to UMK students, academicians and the national community to help them face the impact of the pandemic. Through the discussion, critical in-demand skill sets were identified and upskilling sessions were provided for the students to increase their chances of being employed, thereafter increasing the graduate employability rate of UMK.

In addition, UMK is proud to have facilitated COVID-19 by offering the Tuanku’s Chancellor’s hall as a public vaccination centre for the Bachok district from 8 May 2021 to 1 October 2021, in addition to its existing health facilities such as health and dental clinics to attend to the well-being of staff and students.

CHAPTER 5: A WAY FORWARD TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE UMK - Committed to improve sustainable development agenda even many challenges - Way Forward initiatives through ‘Pelan Induk Kampus Hijau 2020-2025’ (‘2020-2025 Green Campus Master Plan’). - Improvement that will be considered: - Setup a sustainability unit or a green office to coordinate sustainability-related activities on campuses. - Streamline coordination between university departments/units to maximize the impact of individual campus’ initiatives. - Effectively communicate current and upcoming activities between campus centres and faculties to ensure assistance and support are given to implement the initiatives they created.
