AN EXHIBITION BY MANTIS STUDIO ANOTHER AN EXHIBITION BY MANTIS STUDIO

A note. Shape and form mould our human experience. Galleries are designed to allow us the space to form a relationship with the art within. Spaces affect how we think and feel. The gallery is an open space that allows us to explore different ways of thinking. What happens when we lose this space? The idea for this exhibition came after being locked down for close to a year, first in Tokyo then in London, I was missing another space to go to. So I decided to make my own virtual reality gallery and created an open call with the title ‘Another Space’. Artists from all over the world submitted work and the exhibition highlights 43 of them. I hope you can enjoy it in a moment of relaxation - use the arrow keys and mouse to navigate the space - or if you have a VR headset try it out. The space was designed by me then brought to life by the brilliant Sneha and Kirill - check out their work here. Thank you to all the artists involved. It’s been an honour to display your work and thank you to all who submitted - it really was a joy going through them. Enjoy, Rachel

H2ERG ₂ H ERǴ means ‘to shine’, and was one of the first words to describe silver. The brand was founded by Karoline Healy, a Materials Researcher who started the project based on technological and scientific research. The brand adopts a sustainable ethos, mostly using recycled silver and sustainable packaging. The latest collection is called Natural Basics. A series of everyday pieces inspired a hypothetical biological future where precious metals can be grown cultivated to become jewellery. www.H2ERG.co.uk @H2ERG_jewellery

If you moved clockwise around the space from the room you enter you will find the following artists..

Hin 1. Outer space. Inspired by a film produced in Hong Kong, ‘Echos of the Rainbow’, the main character wears a fishbowl on his head when he is little, dreaming about outer space and becoming an astronaut. The view through the glass is blurry and distorted. As kids we are full of imagination and unachievable dreams. 2. Memory Space One of the famous quotes from the movie is “Goldfish’s memories only last for 3 seconds”. When we grow older we realise that life is not about outer space. We have to acknowledge the realities; that it is the intangibles such as time and memories that are most valuable. The goldfish resemble the adults in that we are given limited time and memory space. It is up to us to decide what to remember and what to leave behind. Even though both spaces might be contracting, I hope that we can all retain the purity and happiness of ‘Space 1’ and the ability to treasure time and memories of ‘Space 2’, so that the fish lives on. 20, Jennifer Wong, University of Leeds @hin.dsgn

FLORA WEIL An animated point clouds made from 3D scans of places that are special to her in Tokyo. She recently discovered that a crooked building I had a soft spot for got taken down and replaced by a parking lot. So she started scanning spaces, turning them into point clouds, and playing with these spatial memories digitally. @florawl

CAITLIN HICKLING Follow the journey of ‘The Writhing Map’ as it enters a different realm, the digital realm. ‘Writhing Map, supporting text’ speaks of the moment before the being slips from the physical realm. ‘Carving’ is a map of words seen from a different angle, a physical flip in view point, with the Writhing Map ‘the being’ now existing in another space, observing and unraveling the new environment from a warped viewpoint. caitlinhickling.com @Caitlin_w_hickling

BD85 A submission from BD85, a young graphic and communication designer from Hong Kong, who graduated in Visual communication design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, school of design. About the project, The Coral and bone backstory exhibition. These two objects seem to be unrelated to each other, but the story behind the two objects are meaningful. As Coral has a similar chemical structure with human bones, most of the time doctors would use the coral for bone repairing, but becuase of the pollution issue, the number of corals started to decrease. Therefore I would like to mention both items in the back story exhibtion, to raise public awareness via deisgn. While I have explored 3D rendering and created human bones, to emphasize the structure and form of both objects, to visualise the reparing. Pointing out the environmental problem as well as the important relationship between humans and nature. @BD85BD85

LOUISE SILVERSPARRE TECHNOFOSSILS - REMAINS OF THE HUMAN EPOCH Humanity has had such a profound impact on the natural world that nature has created objects that wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for our interference – objects that will remain long after we are gone. We are accustomed to talking about climate impact in the near future, but I believe we need to see it from a new perspective that looks even further ahead in time. In this project I explore the long-term remnants of what is known as the Anthropocene, or the Human Epoch. The objects that are going to endure from the Anthropocene era, objects that have emerged in step with human development, are known as technofossils. Unlike regular fossils, which are derived from living things, technofossils have been created by or as a result of human activity. A mineral that has been formed by melted plastic washed up on beaches, radioactive uranium glass marbles created by the first atomic bomb test – these are the kinds of things we’re leaving behind for future generations to find. Humanity has often turned to nature to try to understand what happened before us. If fossils are the Earth’s history books, then technofossils are human’s. These are the objects that will be left to tell our history when we are no longer here to do it ourselves. louisesilfversparre.com @louisesilfversparre

KAT The Next Step Exploring the city has taken on a new meaning since the global pandemic hit. Waves of feeling trapped took over my thoughts, but I also found myself attempting to come up with new ways to see the familiar. Sometimes we just need to stop, observe, and take the next step. @katologs
