Student-teachers Ministry It's heart-warming to see Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) student-teachers and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) under- graduates being taken care of by their lecturers. Many are fed not only with spiritual food but physical food as well. Investing in future teachers is never a wasted effort. Each one of them is likely to influence around 7000 lives (200 students per year x 35) if they teach for 35 years. Much time and money has been poured into this worthwhile ministry. In the past decade, Christian lecturers have organised several camps to equip and prepare student-teachers for their appointment after graduation. I have met and spoken to young teachers who graduated from both the IPG and UPSI. They are committed to the Lord's calling as teachers. They get involved in SCF work or teaching of SPM Bible Knowledge. They teach with great enthusiasm. They are on the look-out for the needy ones. They have a great sense of purpose and commitment even when they are sent to very rural and remote places. Did this just happen overnight? I attribute it to their spiritual formative years in the IPG and UPSI. 7

This is a result of prayer and intentional efforts to identify and bring in younger TCF members into the EXCO. Humanly speaking, the younger EXCO members have a longer runway to learn from the seniors and lead TCF. Besides bringing in young leaders to serve, TCF organised 'Jom Makan', 'Jom Sekinchan' and other fun outings and makan get-togethers in our attempt to engage with young teachers. Friendship ties made at the TCF annual conferences and mission trips in the 70's, 80's and 90's have kept older members close as friends even after retirement. Similarly, we hope that the young teachers will form long lasting friendships and community. In Dec 2017, Cheli and Lee Wah brought a group of 26 young teachers for a conference in Dunedin, New Zealand. In 2018, 30 young teachers attended the Asian Christian Teachers' Conference in Singapore. 8

We listened to each other's views about the size, number of colour pages, and the design et cetera. We finally decided on our current A4-sized format, starting with the first issue of 2013. I remember being enthralled by this pretty cover What about the contents of IN STEP? Were the and the red strawberry colour reflected in the rest of contributors always teachers and educators? She records her thanks to her teacher Ms Heng who would not give up on her despite the fact that she was dyslexic and had issues with reading, writing and Mathematics. At the time of writing, Cassandra works as a journalist for the Star newspaper. 12
What changes did IN STEP go through internally? I By DEBBIE YEONG rejoice to read articles about East Malaysia; some 13 written by East Malaysians and some written by teachers serving there. There is more connection – more feel between East and West. Currently TCF prints about 1200 copies for every issue of IN STEP. This is a much smaller figure than the days of old when it could reach 3000 copies. Does that mean our readership has shrunk? Not necessarily. Our readers, particularly the young ones have a plethora of options. IN STEP went online via TCF's website in 2009 and Facebook in 2010. IN STEP has gone through major intentional changes to serve its readers. Are you willing to go through changes to serve the community around you?

MCT Growth: Celebrating Teachers By KWAN SIEW WAI Every year, MCT would celebrate Teacher's Day at various locations in Malaysia. For MCT the celebrations are usually organised by the local committee. In Ipoh, Tee Ai Chin, former MCT chairperson, has been organising Teacher's Day celebrations every year, attended by about a hundred teachers. MCT has also held Teacher's Day celebrations in Sitiawan, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Seremban, Yong Peng and Muar. To encourage more teachers to join the events, there are forums, short talks, sharing sessions, games and food during the bilingual celebrations. The annual Teacher's Day celebrations have helped MCT maintain good interaction among members and also motivate them to be more active in the fellowship. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the celebrations were held online in 2020 and 2021. With the intervention of technology, we managed to reach out to members in Sabah, Sarawak and the east coast of the Peninsula. Praise the Lord for the online events. May the celebrations continue to be a blessing to many teachers. 16

Asian Christian Teachers Conference By OOI VERN HAU 19 The Asian Christian Teachers Conference (ACTC) saw its inception in 2003 and has since come to its 5th conference in 2018, all of which have been held in Singapore. The conferences which aim to equip teachers to find deeper purpose and meaning in their role as Christian educators have always been a tremendous encouragement to all the conferees. Let's take a walk down memory lane with the timeline below: 2003: Treasures in Jars of Clay — Bishop Solomon, Rev John Ting, Benny Ho 2005: Joy in the Journey — Moey Yoke Lai, Tan Soo Inn, Lim Siong Guan 2007: Teaching with Courage — Lee Sing Kong, Mrs Chua Yen Ching, Peter Chao 2008: Staying the Course — Seah Jiak Choo, Yap Kok Keong, Cheli Tamilselvam 2018: Discerning God's Heart — Ho Peng, Dr Kelvin Tan, Seah Jiak Choo The first ACTC was attended by educators from Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines, and the network has since widened to other neighbouring countries including Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia and Timor-Leste over the span of 15 years. Praise God for the growing network of His people! We also saw a greater circle of partnership in the organising team of the last conference, which consisted of TCF Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and IVCF Philippines. The conferences offered many inspiring talks, reflective vespers, insightful and practical workshops, and for the overseas educators, eye-opening school visits in Singapore. As said in Proverbs 27:17, “as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another”, truly, the ACTC experience has given many Christian educators the opportunity to learn from one another, ignite passion for teaching in our calling and refresh one another with God's love.
ACTC Young Leaders Retreat 14-15 December 2019 By OOI VERN HAU As the 6th Asian Christian Teachers Conference (ACTC) 2020 was being planned, the steering committee wanted to create an opportunity for young teachers in the team to be involved in the planning. Voilà! The birth of the ACTC Young Leaders Retreat. Delegates came from four neighbouring countries, namely Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. To kick-start the retreat at SMK Menjalara, Mr Cheli spoke on two topics “Is teaching merely a vocation?” and “How has God called you into teaching?”. The sessions challenged us to see the teaching profession as a high calling from God, just as how God has personally called each of us into salvation. Hallelujah! In our ups and downs as Christian educators, we must avail ourselves to the leading of the Holy Spirit, who creates within us a hunger for the real truth that eclipses our shallow, temporal desires. We were very much encouraged by the promise of God in Romans 8:28 that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (NKJV). Whenever we say “We can't”, God says “WE CAN!” Delegates from each country also took turns to talk about their journey as Christian teachers. Then delegates sat together according to country groups to brainstorm and strategise plans to promote ACTC 2020 in their own countries. The five groups then reconvened to share prayer requests. Mr Lisman from TCF Singapore conducted the closing reflection and one of the significant points that he emphasised was “Do not be afraid!” This phrase appears in the Bible 365 times, hence, one phrase for each new day as we serve God in the harvest field of education for His glory. The retreat was also interposed with fun-filled explorations to local tourist attractions such as the KLCC, Central Market and even Batu Caves. Of course, the fellowship would not be complete without many rounds of feasting on Malaysian delicacies. Our prayer is that the friendships that have been forged will continue to thrive. 20

I hope I will be able to make an impact on my students as how DCBC has made an impact on me!
