USEFUL INFORMATION - L.E.A.D Lets make Cyprus Green is a non-profit organisation on a mission to spread awareness to the public about the negative human impact on the planet, in particular the harm caused by excessive and improper disposal of waste, and the use of plastic. We take action to encourage both residents and visitors to the island to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle by “going green”. When you “go green” you gain knowledge and adopt new habits that lead to environmentally friendly & ecologically responsible choices in ways of living. This will help to protect the environment and sustain its natural resources. And the biggest part of this effort is you – the committed, caring people who are adopting the ‘go green’ movement by eschewing the use of harmful plastic and reducing waste. Come join us, and together, we can make our island – and the planet – a greener, better place! COMMUNITY - L.E.A.D Proper waste management and disposal is very important for environmental and economic reasons and should be carried out as follows: Household waste should be disposed of in special bags in outdoor built- in litter bins or hermetically closed waste bins. Waste is collected twice a week and should be disposed of for collection on the specified days and hours (for more information, please contact the Municipal Cleaning Services at 25362201). Recycling: PMD and paper bags are collected once a week from all premises by Green Dot. Glass containers should be disposed of in bell-shaped bins located in various parts of the city. Bulky waste (such as furniture, debris, electrical appliances, pruning etc.) is disposed of in green points. The nearest green point is located at Fasoula and is expected to operate very soon. Bulky waste/ pruning can be collected by the Municipality upon notifying the Municipal Health Services by telephone at 25884590. Clothing: footwear is disposed of in special bins located in various parts of the city. Batteries are disposed of in special battery collection bins located in public buildings, banks, supermarkets, schools etc. For more information or for household hazardous waste disposal (i.e. cooking oil, expired medicines or prescription drugs, electrical appliances, light bulbs etc.), citizens can contact the Municipal Health Services at 25884590. COMMUNITY - L.E.A.D EFFECTS OF FIREWORKS ON PEOPLE, ANIMALS & PROPERTY. Illegal use of fireworks can be dangerous to you and to others and is a public nuisance. People who use fireworks carelessly, or without knowing what they’re doing can be killed or maimed. They can also kill or maim others. Noise from fireworks can cause distress, especially as fireworks can sound like gunfire. The noise can also cause tinnitus and deafness, or aggravate a nervous condition. People who suffer from asthma can experience discomfort and epileptics can experience seizures following fireworks displays. When frightened by fireworks, horses and dogs have been known to injure themselves and others by running away, potentially causing accidents and damage to property. For these reasons, animal owners who have been advised of an authorised fireworks display are urged to keep their dogs, cats and other pets inside the house, so that the animals are safe and can’t run away. Lets not forget about the birds! when a fireworks display occurs near a bird, the birds simultaneously explode into the night skies in utter panic which can lead to huge numbers of deaths, usually because these birds either smash their skulls or break their necks as the result of flying into trees, fences, billboards, houses and other solid objects that they cannot see in the gloom and ensuing chaos. 10

COMMUNITY - L.E.A.D The use of fireworks could cause fires in forests, agricultural areas or even houses with “unpredictable catastrophic consequences”. Fireworks can, frighten children and adults, cause bushfires, and terrify pets and wildlife.Fireworks are a “serious threat for the natural environment”, following reports concerning their illegal use at events such as weddings and birthdays. Individuals who use fireworks without the relevant licence could face prison, or a fine, or both. To report any possible illegalities regarding the use of fireworks, the public may contact 1460. The wonderful routine of swimming in the sea, lounging by the pool and savouring the clear and cooler evenings is now altered to a routine of work, work and more work. But I’ll let you in on a secret: it’s not that bad if you boil it down to the key essentials. It’s something small and quick but when we look back at them 13 every few years it is wonderful to see how everyone grows and changes. Instead of taking a picture, I have found that families instead print out a checklist of sorts where you write what you like, what you don’t like, what you want to be when you grow up, how tall you are, what your favourite colour is, etc. This is once again done every year and when you look back at them you can see what has come true, what has changed and what you agree with. ART | CRAFT | HABERDASHERY BEAARUTTSYH|ONPA|ILASR|T CMLAASSSSAEGS E Lania Village Located in the Lemesos (Limassol) district, the small, traditional village of Lania sits in an altitude of 570 metres on the Troodos mountain range, just 25 km from Lemesos town. The village can be reached by following B8 road. Lania is one of the grape cultivating villages of the island. Whilst its residents were mainly employed in the cultivation of vines - and the production of wines, Zivania (spirit) and Soutzoukos (grape sweet) in older times - due to urbanization, there are now only a few harvesters and grape producers left. According to tradition, the village got its name from Lana, daughter of Dionysus, God of Wine, or it may be derived from the word ‘valania’ (acorn), due to the fruit of the oak trees growing abundantly in the region. Interesting sights include the old wine press, the Commandaria Storage Museum, and an old olive press. The church of Panagia Valana is located in the centre of the village, whilst the chapel of Panagia Valana can be found just outside the village, near a small picnic area and a park. Every May, the women of the village open their yards to welcome visitors to their houses in the ‘Lanes and Courtyards of Lania’ event. 14

COMMUNITY - L.E.A.D - OUT AND ABOUT LIMASSOL CASTLE Situated in the Old Town Limassol’s Castle – In the centre of the main square you will find a 14th century, Byzantine construction, the Limassol castle.
