1.0 Executive Summary This report outlines the operation of the first Drone Delivery Service in the world. It describes the joint venture between Flytrex who are an autonomous Drone company and AHA who are Iceland’s largest online marketplace. Their purpose is to provide a service that is aimed to benefit customers by reducing delivery times and cutting costs. This report will also identify how’s its intellectual property is protected. The report will then give information on a spin off service called “Air Coffee” that could be developed from the original idea using a drone. The report will go further into detail of how this service can possibly be created without having to interfere with the intellectual property.
2.0 The Original Product (OP) The Original Product is a drone delivery service that was created only this year in Reykjavik Iceland. This is a joint venture between Flytrex who are a drone delivery firm based in Tel Aviv Israel and Aha who hold Iceland’s biggest online market. This Original Product allows shoppers to receive food items and other goods right to their doorstep via a drone. The customer will then receive their goods in a far quicker time than they would by post or a delivery van as there is less traffic in the air than on the road. Yariv Bash who is the Co-founder and Chief Executive of Flytrex and he stated, “we are making delivery as instant as ordering”. Yariv Bash also stated, “this is a working system, not a one-off wonder”. His company proudly claim that in Reykjavik a package to be delivered by car can take twenty-five minutes while a drone will only take around four minutes. The deliveries can currently carry a load that weighs up to 3kgs for a distance not to exceed more than six miles. Currently there can only be one delivery at a time. The online service is presently only available to users of Aha website that are based in Reykjavik, but the future aim is to also expand overseas. A discussion has already taken place to expand to a second city of one which has skyscrapers, but the name has yet to be revealed. Maron Kristofersson who is the CEO of AHA Iceland gave an insight into his future by saying “if you make it work here in Iceland, you can make it work anywhere.''
2.1 How the Service Works The customer will first have to purchase a Skytrex that is then delivered by post which is ironic. They must do the following once the drone is received; ● Check that all the necessary parts are in the box (prop sets, battery, charger, power cable, manuals and lastly rubber bands) ● Install a micro sim card (For serial data) ● Register your Flytrex and connect it with your account ● Have 3G connectivity ● Charge your batteries ● Activate the Flytrex Aviation Ltd App This application is a substitute for a user to possess a remote control, thus giving them three flying options. One is auto pilot mode and the other is the old fashioned manual way by installing a remote control. This is the only app on the market that gives the customer an option to send and request goods. 2.2 How to make a Delivery To make a delivery the user must follow the below steps; ● Firstly, the user must pick a contact ● Decide on a landing spot ● A short note can be exchanged between two application users. ● A two-minute time limit for the delivery is needed for the drone to promptly make its way to the desired landing spot. ● Be careful of altitude and follow local regulations. ● Check propellers before the drone takes off ● User must open the app on their phone ● Check that the battery is correctly secured ● Within half a minute of turning the drone on it should be ready to fly using the app. Image Two : Package inserted into drone for Reykjavik Delivery
2.3 Intellectual Property The Intellectual Properties that will be discussed for this report are the following; ● Patents ● Trade Marks ● Copyright ● Design Rights Flytrex and their licensors own all the Intellectual Property rights throughout the world and the website and all the content that is displayed on the site. Flytrek have legal terms for public viewing on their website which must be adhered to. Trademark and Logos can strictly not be used by any Third Party source. They also state that feedback anywhere on their website isn’t requested and therefore can be used in return to promote the site and product. It is also mentioned they could sell their Databases if they ever sold part of the business or even the whole business.
2.4 Patents A patent can be described as “a right granted to an inventor by the federal government that permits the inventor to exclude others from making, selling, or using the invention for a period of time”. This report includes patent application from Flytrek for the United States below and this was only published on the 26t h of October this year. The cheapest way for a patent license in the United States is do write and file the application yourself, this will cost around $900. If a Patent Agent is hired it can cost between $5,000 and $10,000. If the application for a Patent was made after 1995 it will last for twenty years from the earliest date the application was filled. 2.4 Patents Image of Estimated Patent Costs in the US 2.5 Trademarks The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) describe Trademarks as “ your trade mark is the symbol your customers use to pick you out. It distinguishes you from your competitors”. “You can protect and build upon your trade mark if you register it”. Image of FLYTREX Trade Mark Under Justia FLYTREX Serial Number is 86198438 and registration number Is 4648193 and registration date is 02-12-2014.
2.6 Copyright The copyright law here in Ireland protects the Intellectual Property until after seventy years after their death. A copyright can also be purchased, sold or even licensed. The Copyright Law in Ireland falls under the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000. Copyright Terms for Flytrex can be found under this link h ttp://www.flytrex.com/corp/terms/ Flytrex take copyright very seriously and advice in their terms that if something on their site infringes someone else’s copyright they can be contacted and asked for it to be removed. An email address is provided so they can be contacted by a business or person who has a legitimate claim. 2.7 Design Rights The Design Rights of a product are based on the appearance of the product. It is also based on the shape, colour and pattern of the product. This can be bought, sold or licensed just like copyright can. Design Rights are owned by the creator. Flytrex didn’t come up with the design of a drone as they were previously created but they did design their business idea.
3.0 Spin Off Service On the research that has taken place in the report it is felt there is a gap in the Irish market for a spin off service involving a drone. Firstly, a drone will need to be purchased. Before flying the drone, an account must be setup and registered with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) Asset System. The service will be for an independent coffee shop in open space areas like a park where coffee can be delivered to a paying customer. The service name will be “Air Coffee” and the user will firstly need to download the app and create a profile. They will then have two options, one is they can register their card details on the app or secondly, they can be using the contactless service. The customer will have two options for location pick up, one will be that they have an option to select that says to deliver where their phone is or secondly, they can use google maps and drop a pin. Once this is done the drone will take off and reach the nearby destination of the paying customer. When the drone arrives, the customer can tap their card on the drone, this will then release the shutter door and the customer can get access to the coffee. This will be a max of two cups of coffee for now. The product somewhat overlaps the Original Product as they are also using a drone for a delivery service but it’s not for coffee and they are currently not in the Irish market so there is no competition element to factor in. A copy of Flytrex terms and conditions are displayed w ww.flytrex.com/corp/terms/ It states here that you can’t copy, modify or reproduce anything on their site. There is an email address where they can be contacted. This could be an option prior to going ahead with the small business idea. The product can be then taken to the Irish market and a trademark can be sought for “Coffee Air” and a logo may be branded and designed. A patent application should be made with the Irish Patent Office. Lastly a disclosure form would need to be signed by any staff who assisted in creating the service so a rival company doesn’t suddenly appear with a similar business plan and have all documentation copyrighted to cover the business.
