Also realize that sometimes, those who are being disrespect-We're not talking about pay and benefits—think about what ful may not be aware of how their actions are being per-makes you happy to do your job. Maybe it's just that you enjoy ceived. They may not intend to come off as rude or dis-the actual work you do, or you like your co-workers, or your missive, but in trying to get buy-in for their idea, their excite-company's culture. What you might not think of are the things ment and passion may come off wrong. Other people can justyou take for granted and maybe don't even know you need— be very blunt, and they are usually unapologetic about it. Asklike respect. yourself if you are being overly sensitive?Are You Being Disrespected? Are You Being Disrespectful?If respect wasn't something that came to mind immediately, it Now ask yourself how you feel when you have a great idea.probably means you do feel respected andacknowledged for your good work, and You might be so excited that you will notthat's how it should be. But if you find your-self watching someone else take all the want to listen to input—even if it makescredit for an idea that you had, bringing upideas in meetings that always get shot your idea better. But when you feel pas-down, or being talked down to—especiallyin front of others, you are probably not get- sionate about an idea and go on and onting the respect you deserve. To deal with it constructively, you have to address it im-mediately, but keep anger and emotion out of your response. If The best way to handle this is to try toyou present an idea in a meeting and a co-worker shoots itdown, instead of letting them move on to the next idea, say keep your excitement in check. Be open tosomething like, \"Before we move on, I'd like to hear what theothers think about this idea.\" Even though you may be angry, feedback and other ideas. Maybe othersbe careful with your tone so you come off as professional, notspiteful. are excited about your idea too, and they want to help it work and be even better. Genuinely listen to others and take an inter- est in their input. You will still get credit for the original idea, but your co-workers may be able to help you fine tune it or help if you run into a roadblock. Be open to these suggestions. At times, someone else will have an idea that may not be workable—at least not in its original form. Instead of criticizing or insulting them, learn how to give feedback in a constructive way. Try to think the idea through before saying it won't work, and then say something like, \"I see what you're trying to accomplish, but I'm concerned about...\" con nued on pg. 3
