MenjeIlNaThRanO TDeUmCTpIatONMenarik A GLANCE OF KLANG VALLEY Klang Valley, or Lembah Klang in Malay, is named after Klang River, which is associated to the early development of the area as a cluster of tin mining towns in the late 19th century. Situated in the centre of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Klang Valley comprises the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and its adjoining districts in Selangor, namely Gombak, Hulu Langat, Petaling and Klang, covering an area of 2826 square kilometers. Geographically, it is delineated by Titiwangsa Mountain Range to the north and east, and the Strait of Malacca to the west. Being the most vibrant and lively region in the country, Klang Valley is the heartland of Malaysia’s industry and commerce and is always buzzing with vitality. Home to a great number of migrants from other states within Malaysia and foreign workers from Indonesia, Myanmar, India and Nepal, it is considered as the fastest growing region in the country with many more rapidly growing new towns and yet more is believed to develop in the near future. Development of the region took place mainly in the East-West direction (between Gombak and Port Klang) but the urban areas surrounding Kuala Lumpur have since grown south towards the border with Negeri Sembilan and north towards Rawang. Now, with the emergence of Klang Valley 2 Region, covering two areas in the south of Selangor—the districts of Sepang and Kuala Langat, this new region will generate economic development, strengthen the intra and inter-regional economic network and distribute its benefits to the surrounding areas. These districts have been directly affected by the implementation of mega projects, such as Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) and the Federal Administration Centre in Putrajaya, hence becoming the new areas for the expansion of the present Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan Region, Klang Valley. Sepang District, shaped like the stem of a ‘keris’ as seen from the air, is the youngest district for the state of Selangor. It borders the districts of Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Petaling, as well as Bandar Baru Nilai in Negeri Sembilan. The road network in Sepang comprises the Elite Highway on the west, the Kuala Lumpur- Seremban Highway on the east, and the B20 Highway in between, as well as the Express Rail Link and new roads such as the South Klang Valley Expressway, Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya-Cyberjaya Highway, Putrajaya Urban Motorway and the new B15 Highway. The district of Kuala Langat has become a strategic investment area following the intense development of Putrajaya and KLIA, and good road network linking it to Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang, Port Klang, Putrajaya and KLIA. Kuala Langat is located in the south-western part of Selangor and bordered6 by the districts of Klang to the north and Sepang to the east.

ANYTIME IS LAKSA TIME! INTRODUCTIONSpecial Views From Writer Born In Malaysia:Anytime is Laksa Time!I grew up with my late grandma back in the early 1990’s and she was the best cookwe had in the family that time. People would pay her to cook and bake for weddings, ceremonies and even small birthday parties. Cooking is one of her passions too, soshe would de nitely cook anything for anyone. She loved to travel. From visiting other places, she gathered new recipes and broughtback to her hometown in Ipoh, Perak. From the recipes she acquired, she wouldimprovise with her own creativity, making her cooking become even more famousamongst the people of that area. One of her favorite dish is Laksa. She prepared it at least once a week, to serve herfamily including me and my ve siblings. I recalled how she trained us to resist thehot steaming bowl; by gradually increasing the level of spiciness. As we grew up, wegot used to eating Laksa regularly just like any daily meals. But as soon as our parentsstarted to move to another town, she cooked Laksa only when we came to visit her.Since I have always loved Laksa, I learned that Laksa comes in variety depending onits origins. Some can be very mild in tastes, but some can be very spicy. However, theyhave three things in common – chunks of sh, kesum leaves and the signature whiterice-based noodles. Some are served with a lot of condiments while some are no-frills,simply to highlight the taste of sh used.1 Laksa Nyonya Altered from Thai version of Laksa, the gravy is made with thick, strongly spiced coconut milk with curry and chili peppers, and can be commonly found in northern part of Malaysia such as Penang and Perak. It can be considered as the ery type of Laksa, especially when it’s eaten while it’s still hot. Don’t try if you have a delicate stomach!2 Laksam 11 Quite similar to Laksa Nyonya, the gravy is made thick and some people can eat it by hands without utensils. The chili peppers, however, are not blended together with the gravy. Instead, they are cut into small pieces and served with the condiments, making it an ideal type of Laksa for those who can’t tolerate hot and spicy dish. Laksam can be easily identi ed from its at white rice our noodles that are decorated into rolls, and it was born in the northeastern part of Malaysia, which are Kelantan and Terengganu.
MenjeIlNaThRanO TDeUmCTpIatONMenarik ANYTIME IS LAKSA TIME! 3 Asam Laksa The word asam means tamarind, which is equal to sourness. If you fancy sour and spicy food, Asam Laksa is probably the right choice for you. It is also made with lemongrass, torch ginger ower and prawn paste which is known as belacan by locals, and topped with pineapple cuts and petis udang, a thick shrimp or prawn paste. This type of Laksa is the most popular in Malaysia and can be found anywhere, although the best ones are produced in Penang, Perak, Perlis and Kedah. 4 Laksa Sarawak It looks similar to Laksa Nyonya, but it’s actually not! Although coconut milk is used, the soup contains no curry at all and is made with the same ingredients of Asam Laksa. It is topped with omelet strips, chicken strips, prawns, lime and fresh coriander, and originated from the state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. 5 Laksa Johor Although it resembles the Laksa made in Penang, it actually comes from Johor and di ers in many things too. The gravy has delicate tastes even though coconut milk and spices similar to curry are used. The unique part of this Laksa is the noodles which can also be the typical Italian spaghetti, and the gravy that is made with dried prawns and kerisik which is coconut that is grated, roasted and ground to a paste. Garnishing include pickled white radish, Vietnamese coriander, mint leaves and sambal belacan, a chili-based sauce made with prawn paste which is placed on the side. It can be found commonly in southern part of Malaysia like Johor and Melaka, and this is 12 my favorite among all!
ANYTIME IS LAKSA TIME! INTRODUCTION6 Laksa Bogor Bogor is a town in West Java, Indonesia, which is a neighboring country of Malaysia. This is probably why Laksa can be found in both countries since the ingredients are easily transferred from each one of them. This variant however is served with tempe, a traditional Indonesian soy product cultured and fermented into a cake form. Grinded chili in vinegar is sometimes provided as one of its sides other than boiled egg and glutinous rice cakes.7 Pho Laksa Vietnam Laksa or Pho is a popular street food of noodle soup with clear broth. Served with cuts of bird’s eye chili and red onions, it is also decorated with pieces of beef. This type of Laksa is not commonly found in Malaysia but several Vietnamese restaurants all over the country do o er it in their menus. It’s listed in the Top 50 Best Foods by CNN 2011, which makes it a dish worth a try.8 Thai Laksa Even though it looks similar to Laksa Kelantan, it stands out from the rest of Laksa variants because of its generous amount of topping made of sliced cucumber, Thai basil leaves, fried dried chili peppers, pickled vegetables and a lot of traditional salad known as ulam, produced from local raw leaves that are recognized as popular dish in Malay villages. 13
MenjeIlNaThRanO TDeUmCTpIatONMenarik ANYTIME IS LAKSA TIME! 9 Laksa Kelantan The main ingredient of this Kelantanese version of Laksa is round scad mackerel that is boiled and minced, fried with garlic, onions, datil pepper, ginger, belacan and kantan ower. All these ingredients are mixed with coconut milk, stirred until it becomes thick. It is served with the same toppings as Thai Laksa, however, the taste is more similar to Laksam. 10 Laksa Kedah Tastes like Laksa Penang, but di ers in the garnishing. It can be found easily around Perlis and Kedah area. The broth does not contain coconut milk, made with not much herbs and spices, simply to bring out the taste of mackerel itself. The ingredients are boiled together instead of being stir fried rst. 11 Laksa Penang This is one of the country’s most loved dishes and a winner amongst all the other variants of Laksa. It’s sour, spicy and fruity at the same time and its fragrance will surely invite you to try. The pineapple garnish is chosen carefully based on its ripeness and sweetness. The secret of Laksa Penang is probably how the mackerel is blended together with its bones into the broth. According to many, as soon as they tried Laksa Penang for the rst time, they will look forward to try the14 other types of Laksa as well.

It took approximately 40 minutes from Kuala Lumpur. Why it is a favorite place for tourists? The natures of the hill which filled with weed grass and while the lower areas are mostly covered with oil palm create a calm and relaxing ambience. Besides, the sounds of birds singing are one of the most common natures you will definitely enjoy. You wouldn’t want to miss the hiking adventure up to the hill to enjoy the panoramic view from top of the hill. In fact, the view from the top of Broga Hill had been described by many as incredibly beautiful rainforest view from such a low height. The hike itself is basically easy, taking between 20-45 minutes from the bottom of the hill to the peak of the hill. There are few adventurous slopes but need not to be worried because it is not that difficult to conquer. There are three peaks in total, each one rises above the other through a clear trail fringed by the tall grass at each side. The trails are well marked so that hikers wouldn’t get lost during their hike. It is reminded to not walk around on the grass, as this species in particular will cause an itchy sensation on bare skin. The best time to climb Broga Hill is before the sunrise, you wouldn’t want to missed the most beautiful ‘egg yolk’ in Malaysia!30

Opposite is an equally ornate seafood restaurant that resembles a temple complex. Open throughout the day (and even night), the temple is free to enter as long as you do your exploration quietly. Tourists and holidaymakers commented that the temple is the one of the biggest and most beautiful architecture in Port Dickson. The outer walls of the temple resemble a fortress while numerous legendary statues such as the historical monk Xuanzang, Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie are placed within the temple's compound. Looking spectacular from the top of a hill, the circling fortress gives the viewers an impression of a secluded private premise closed from the outside world.
