Beyond Tawau- Semporna
History Beyond Tawau Semporna is the gateway to beautiful islands and world famous diving and snorkeling sites such as Sipadan Island, Mabul Island, Kapalai Island, Pom Pom Island and others. Semporna has also been rated by international marine scientists as having the world’s richest coral reefs within the Coral Triangle. In the Bajau and Malay Language, ’semporna’ literally means perfect. History of Semporna Semporna was founded soon after the British North Borneo Chartered Company established Sandakan, and initially settled by Chinese traders, most fleeing from Spanish attacks on the Sulu Sultanate. Before named \"Semporna\", this area was known as \"Tong Talun\" in Bajau language which means \"Hujung Hutan\" in Malay or \"at the end of the forest\" in English. Panglima Uddang, Panglima Sallehangni and Panglima Sakti of Bajaus Kubang ancestry were responsible for this name. The name gradually evolved to \"Semporna\" (known as \"Peaceful Place\") over time. Including other parts of eastern Sabah, this area was ruled by the Sultanate of Sulu before being handed over to the British North Borneo Chartered Company in 1876 by agreement. From that time on the area came under permanent British administration. Other western powers, including the Dutch, tried to conquer this area in June 1876 but were repelled by the British presence here. Geography of Semporna Semporna is located at the tip of Semporna Peninsula around Lahad Datu Bay (also known as Darvel Bay) and is visited by tourists as a base for scuba diving or snorkelling trips to Pulau Sipadan (Sipadan Island), some 36 kilometers southeast of town. The island looks pretty much like any other island found in our waters but the only difference is that millions of years ago, Sipadan was formed by an undersea volcano, which means that it is a deepwater oceanic island. In fact, it's the only one of its kind in Malaysia. Dropping to a depth of 600m or 2,000ft to the seabed, it can be daunting for new divers. A narrow shelf, lining the island and then a sudden drop into darkness, is not for all divers. Just below the surface is an alien world, a bizarre backdrop for a wondrous dream. The coral reef skirts Sipadan just below the surface and as far as 164 feet down, providing one of the best wall dive experiences. 63

Beyond Tawau Culture BAJAU The Bajau community is the second largest indigenous group in Sabah and they make up about 15% of the state’s population. The Bajaus are traditionally divided into two groups – the West Coast and the East Coast. The West Coast Bajau people settled in the inland along the western and northern coasts, while the East Coast Bajaus settled along Sabah’s east coast, concentrated in Semporna. The main distinction between these two communities is their land/sea orientation. The West Coast Bajaus focus on rice cultivation and livestock rearing. They can mostly be found in places like Kota Belud, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Papar. These lands Bajau are nicknamed ‘Cowboys of the East’ in tribute to their impressive equestrian skills, which are publicly displayed in the annual Tamu Besar Festival in Kota Belud. On the contrary, the East Coast is mostly referred to as ‘sea gypsies’ – they traditionally live in stilt water villages with fishing being their main source of income. They have mostly settled around Semporna, Lahad Datu and Kunak. These people are also known to have great diving skills, with many that spend more than five minutes underwater without oxygen tanks. One of the most popular festival – Regatta Lepa Semporna, an annual event that pays homage to the lepa – a traditional single -mast sailing boat of the Bajau of Semporna. The main highlight of the celebration that falls in April is the water parade of all the artistically decorated boats that represent a particular village or family. 67
Beyond Tawau BAJAU LAUT: SEA GYPSIES OF SABAH Who are the Sea Gypsies? A life as interesting as their name, the ‘sea gypsies’ are definitely community imaginations are based on. The community referred to as sea gypsies due to their nomadic, seafaring way of life throughout their entire lives; they rarely set foot on land. Even though they are known as the Sea Gypsies, the correct term of their community is ‘Bajau Laut’. History Their origin is unclear as for most of their history was a nomadic, seafaring people, living in seclusion, surviving by trading and fishing. For generations, the Bajau people of this region have been living aboard their boats, gathering fish, shells and sea cucumbers. Population Sea gypsies are true masters of the sea, having roamed the waters of the Coral Triangle between Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia for many generations. Even today, a sizeable population still lives in wooden houseboats or stilt huts built atop coral reefs near Semporna’s islands. CORAL TRIANGLE MAP 68
Beyond Tawau Lifestyle Traditionally, the Bajau resided in small boats, sailing day and night with the currents, counting only on their fishing gear to make a living. Others used to live in hiding and many still live nowadays in the middle of nowhere in the trough in which the lagoon sits, on floating villages built on the coral reefs. Today, many have come ashore to live on small islands, but continue to develop their perfect knowledge of the oceans, whilst marketing their fish on a small scale. Basically, their life revolves around the sea. Many of them work as fishermen, their main source of protein is the fish, and they make boats and are excellent divers. A study found that the sea gypsies rarely, if ever, set foot on land. When they do spend the occasional night or two on solid ground, they often report feeling ‘landsick’. Preferring the sea, they would only go ashore for business. This may include selling their catches, collecting fresh water for drinking or wood for making boats and as well, to bury the dead. Most would return to their boats by nightfall. When a Bajau Laut is born, the child’s father will carve a boat out of a piece of log. This primitive boat making technique is still evident, as we have seen the traditional boats around. When the sun falls, the head of the family will bring their boats to a safer place and drop anchor. Perhaps it is to stop the boat from floating away while they sleep at night. Usually, they will moor the boat right next to the houses on stilts. At the break of dawn, the boats are back to the open sea. Skills The sea gypsies are exceptional free divers. Many have mastered the art of free diving to depths of well over 20m while holding their breath for several minutes (some say they can even breathe under water for up to five minutes!), which explains their ‘King of the Sea’ title. Apart from being excellent at fishing and diving, they are also skilled at constructing pile 69
Beyond Tawau houses and boats called lepa. The beautifully decorated lepa boats feature in the popular Regatta Lepa Festival. Bajau beliefs The traditional belief system of the West Coast Bajau people is animistic in nature; a variety of spiritual beings interact with human beings both positively and negatively. But in recent years, a majority of the community has converted to Islam. Festival Celebrated on April annually, Regatta Lepa Semporna is the most colorful festival and a cultural experienced not to be missed while visiting Semporna. Travelers can see the boats converge on the town for two days. Amid traditional singing and dancing, as well as sea sports and competitions, awards are given for the best lepa-lepa. Their unique lepa boat resembles the modern- day’s catamaran vessels, with two adjoining legs for added stability when roughing the wild Pacific Ocean. In the evening, one could witness dozens of lepa boat coming home with their daily catch. 70

P Pekan Semporna, 91308 Semporna, Sabah Snorkeling Tips Snorkeling is the perfect way to access nature’s most wonderful realms. The ocean remains as one of the best places to exercise both our body and sense of discovery. Read on to 1. WEAR YOUR MASK PROPERLY The best snorkeling tip and also one of the most important: Your mask must fit your face. Hold the snorkel mask to your face and breathe in through your 73
Beyond Tawau nose. If the mask seals perfectly and stays in place without holding it, you got it. If air leaks in, water will to, so make sure it fits! Keep all your hair out of the seal too. Moustaches can be a bit of a problem, so put some chap stick below your nose to get a “gasket” or maybe even consider shaving, if possible. If the strap fits snugly at the widest area of your head towards the top back, it’s perfect. If you wear it just at the base of your head, water will seep in! If water ever starts flowing in as you snorkel, reach back and check for the straps place. The water should apply enough pressure to seal the mask into place so don’t wear it too tightly. 2. PRACTISE WITH YOUR GEAR FIRST Rent equipment before you go to the beach, and give yourself time to adjust it and get used to it. Practice putting on your mask; adjust the strap so it is lightly snug, but not tight. With a light inhale, your mask should suction to your face. That is what mostly holds it to your face. And practice putting your fins. 3. FIN UP! Choose a pair of fins that fit in snuggly but never too tight. If they hurt or curl your toes even a tiny bit you may have cramps. It’s always better if your fins are slightly bigger than too small. They will slip on easier once both your feet are wet. Without your fins you won’t swim properly so, try taking this as one of the best snorkeling tips ever too and get your snorkeling pants ready! 4. ALWAYS PRACTICE YOUR BREATHING Practice through your snorkel with your head outside the water before dipping in. 74
Beyond Tawau Put your mask on and breathe through the tube! Don’t bite the tube, rest your teeth or your jaw will get really sore really fast. Practice some breathing exercises to get you comfortable. Once you feel confident, and this is also one of the best snorkeling tips; practice the classic calm floating face down in the water. While you’re at it you’ll see a lot of cool things underwater, this will help you focus. 5. KNOW YOUR LIMITS One of the best snorkeling tips that someone could give you is to learn your limitations. This is a vital skill that is often overlooked. There is no good reason to push your limits as you snorkel. These will change and grow as you become more experienced. A relaxed snorkeler will get lots more pleasure out of snorkeling once you understand and consider all factors such as water temperature, surge, currents and water visibility. Being relaxed as you snorkel will make you less threatening. This is great, because once the marine wildlife realizes you represent no threat, they will act normal around you which allow you to have a better experience. 75

Geographically, Sipadan Island is located at the centre of the Indo-Pacific Basin, which has the richest marine habitat in the world. Sipadan Island is the only oceanic island of Malaysia. This mushroom-shape island was formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct undersea volcano, which rises 600 Meters from the ocean floor. There a total of 12 dive sites in Sipadan, and the most recommended dive sites are the Barracuda Point, South Point, Hanging Garden and Turtle Cavern. Located 15km from Sipadan, this 20-hectare piece of land surfaces 2–3 metres above sea level, consists mostly flat grounds and aerial view is oval-shaped island fringed by sandy beaches. It is one of the best muck-diving sites in the world. Be amazed by the abundant of corals growing so near to the shore. The resorts and dive operators on Mabul have been trying to involve the locals in beach and underwater clean-ups, coral transplanting and environmental education. One of them even pays the villagers to collect the garbage, which otherwise would end up in the sea.
